Karen (2021)
Actually not that bad!
It's pretty fantastic that this document exists. Fifty years from now, we can show this to our grandchildren and say "this is how utterly insane the progressives became in the early 20's... They actually felt this way about white people".
This is why so many of us have abandoned the left.
Contact (1997)
A not so subtle argument, but an effective execution
Look, I get it. The entire point of this movie was to explain to atheists what it's like to know something in your bones, but not having the evidence to back it up. And as an atheist... I like this movie anyway. It is flawed to a degree. This movie has been a thousand jokes over the years. Many, many people do not like it, and they mock it. But Jodi Foster is incredible. The action sequences are powerful and emotional. The music is exceptional, and underrated. There are incredible supporting performances from James Woods, Tom Skerrit, and David Morse. I actually get choked up just thinking about certain scenes.
If you haven't seen this, give it a watch.
The Outpost (2019)
Very powerful and emotional
I don't usually do this, but I feel compelled to write a quick review. This is the second best non-fiction modern American combat film that I've ever seen by far (#1 obviously being Black Hawk Down). It's the only movie that I've ever felt compelled to re-watch immediately. By the end I was literally sobbing uncontrollably. This was unusual, and I'm not totally sure why it happened (hence the re-watch for clarity). Shout out to Caleb Landry Jones for his excellent performance. In a year where pickins are slim, don't be surprised if he gets an Oscar nod next April.
This is a terrific war film. It's the best Netflix original movie that's ever been made. Please watch it and recommend it to your people.
Away (2020)
I don't understand why the reviews are so negative
I guess the bot campaign against Netflix original content continues, because this show is significantly better than the scores that it's getting. Don't get me wrong, it's not a masterpiece. But the writing and acting are well above average. Fantastic character development. Bottom line... it's an entertaining show, and it will hook you in pretty early on. Fans of "The Martian" and "The Europa Report" are encouraged to give it a try. Do not pay attention to the ratings or reviews (except this one 😜).
Wine Country (2019)
The conspiracy against Netflix movies continues
This movie was absolutely fine. Some great comedy acting by some very distinguished comedy actresses. Is it predictable and stereotypical at times? Sure. Does it deserve these poor ratings and reviews? Absolutely not, and the fact that it is rated so poorly raises suspicion. This is is just one more example in a long list of Netflix movies that continue to receive suspect reviews and lower than deserved ratings. I don't know who is behind this, but it makes me happy to know that others are seeing through this. Forgive the cliché, but the term "fake news" aptly applies to this negative feedback from critics of Netflix original movies, and there is a lot of evidence to support that statement. The following adequate movies were received poorly by "critics":
-Bright
-Like Father
-The Legacy of a White Tail Deer Hunter
-The Week Of
-Game Over Man
-Paddleton
-Birdbox
-The Fundamentals of Caring
These are just a few examples. These movies may are not perfect, but they all have an extreme disparity between cumulative critic score vs. cumulative viewer score. Check it out for yourself if you don't believe me. Now, what is the reason for these discrepancies? There are plenty of suspicions, but not many answers... yet.
All that I know, is that "Wine Country" is just one more perfectly adequate Netflix original that's getting unfairly and inexplicably poor reviews from critics.
Chernobyl (2019)
So far, so great 👍👍👍
Only two episodes in, and I'm totally hooked. Hard to believe that these things actually took place, and only 35 years ago. It's really quite frightening. Fans of bio-disaster films such as "Contagion" and "Outbreak" will be instant fans, but to be honest, "Chernobyl" offers something much more than others have within this sub-genre. The political and non-fiction elements give it a leg up, and the acting from Jared Harris and Stellan Skarsgard is excellent as usual. If the rest of this series follows suit, then this is something that you're not gonna want to miss.
Instant Family (2018)
Tom Segura goes full throttle in a show stealing breakout performance
This was a surprisingly terrific and hillarious film that I enjoyed from start to finish. The story it tells is one that people of all ages and backgrounds will enjoy. What makes this film special though are the comedic performances from each and every actor. Every single one of them is at the top of their game.
Director Sean Anders has delivered his best work with "Instant Family" and I eagerly await his next picture. The true winner of this movie though was standup comedian Tom Segura, who delivered maybe the most captivating supporting acting performances in a comedy since Steve Carell in "Anchorman". Mr. Segura is a true master of his craft, as his clinically sociopathic personality mixes with comedy to create a perfect cocktail. Perhaps the only flaw of this movie is that Segura was not given more screen time. I look forward to seeing Anders and the acting champ working together again soon, and I predict that the best is yet to come from Mr. Segura, who is sure to have secured a place as a future leading man in Hollywood comedy.
Go see "Instant Family" while you have the chance. Just try it out. You'll love it.
