Born a Champion (2021)
So Much Better Than Expected
This is by far my favourite movie of the year. It has everything. I was on the edge of my seat one minute and balling my eyes out the next.
I'm not a big fan of MMA, I genuinely find it too violent, but as a rule, I do like good boxing movies and some martial arts flicks. But this documentary-style drama, part-time romance, and combat flick ticks every box, even touching on the origins of MMA.
This is Sean Patrick Flanery's 'Rocky' moment.
He wrote the movie, plays a compelling lead role, and is a life-long Jiu-Jitsu devotee with blackbelt status to make the combat scenes that much more believable.
And for those in the know, there were various cameos from fighters Renzo Gracie, Mickey Gall, and Edson Barboza.
Despite having some genuinely cliched characters, moments of bad acting (even from Denis Quaid), it didn't matter as the story was such a roller coaster. And unlike most movies of this genre, I genuinely never really knew what was going to happen next.
Don't look it up, don't read about it, don't watch a trailer. Just watch it and enjoy.

True History of the Kelly Gang (2019)
What a failed opportunity.
I was really looking forward to this, especially with the inclusion of internationally renowned stars.
However, it was extremely disappointing. Heath Ledger"s portrayal was so much more compelling.
This was disappointing, lacking depth or, considering it was a deliberate fictionalisation, lacked imagination.
The Magic Pill (2017)
Popularising the diet of death
There's not a single long term study showing any benefit from this way of eating, with the exception of epilepsy suffers.
There is no science in this movie, just anecdotes and good news about bad habits.
People will die from following this unfounded information. Paleo, keto, Atkins, South Beach, they're all iterations of the same low carb, high protein diet that leads to diabetes, cancer and heart disease.
Sure, cut out processed foods, you're bound to have health improvements, reduce caloric intake - you'll lose weight, but don't conflate that with a diet high in cholesterol, saturated fat and animal protein being healthy. This is a disease promotion documentary.
