FBI: Unforeseen (2024)
Americans will go to EVERY length to not wear a mask
This episode is all about an eco terrorist who goes around spraying people associated with the fracking industry in the face with a deadly chemical. For the entire episode, the only person who wore a respiratory mask was the terrorist. THE TERRORIST. None of the FBI agents ever wore a mask, EVER. They're literally chasing this person through a park, he sprays them, but nope, no lesson learnt, sure let's go chase him again and WEAR NO MASK. Then they're evacuating a building and the poisonous gas is coming through the sprinkler system, but... what's that? Oooh ofcourse, no one's wearing a mask. It's so ridiculous, I actually can't believe what I'm seeing. Wear. A. Mask. You morons. I mean, the episode starts off with Maggie saying she wants to get pregnant, but suuuuuure, let's go running around the poisonous gas. Americans are so.... weird.
How to Date Billy Walsh (2024)
Toxic male manipulates female
What a disappointment. A very typical disappointment. In a nutshell, this movie is about a boy who gaslights, manipulates and lies to his so-called love interest to get her to date him. He doesn't deserve her but ofcourse in true movie fashion, all he has to do is some half baked apology and she's all his. What a horrible message to send to young women! I was appalled that this misogynistic garbage is still being pedalled as entertainment. And a love story no less. The lead actress, Amelia, deserved a better ending. The two leads had no chemistry and Billy was a wasted talent. Overall very disappointing. The only saving grace in this entire film is the half decent soundtrack.
65 (2023)
It's ok
Ok here's the thing. The premise is actually pretty good. I think the story would have been so much better of the kid hasn't been in it. This is like Cast Away, but with an annoying child plus dinosaurs. The dinosaurs make it fun, the child makes it tedious. The number of times I yelled at the screen "JUST LET HER DIE" kind of sums up my frustration with her. Adam Driver is great in this, the dinosaurs are great. The suspense could be better. The ending is interesting from an evolutionary perspective, but it's done in a way that's a bit... meh. Overall, it's worth watching, just don't expect it to be Oscar-level. But it's still very watchable.
On the Basis of Sex (2018)
Inspiring
Amazing movie about the late, great RBG. If you're not familiar with her life and achievements, this film is a great place to start. What a trailblazer she was, the obstacles she overcame during her early years, her tenacity, drive and ambition to right wrongs is inspirational.
Armie Hammer plays her devoted husband and their love story is wonderful to watch as well. The final court scene is where everything comes together; the end of the film but the start of her legacy. It's incredibly eye-opening to learn about how marginalised and pigeon-holed women were at the time (and still are in a lot of ways), and the almost undeserved superiority that white men had in the world (and still do). I'm glad that at the end of the film, the judges showed some humanity. Everyone should watch this film.
The Night Agent (2023)
Loved it
What's not to love about this show? Appealing leads, decent plot twists and good action sequences. Yes, some of the actors are annoying (vice president's daughter should have died for her atrocious acting), and the plot/scenes have some noticeable issues. The President isn't convincing and comes across as a pawn rather than a leader. Same goes for the chief of staff, the casting is a bit questionable at times, but the two leads are watchable. At the heart of it, it's entertaining. If you love action/good fight scenes, a little bit of suspense, and are willing not to look too deeply into the story, you'll love it.
Ryû to sobakasu no hime (2021)
Decent, but main character is ANNOYING
Interesting story, a play on the classic Beauty and the Beast story. Belle's shyness is ridiculously over-acted to the point of being irritating. There is no need for her quivering, hyperventilating, screeching behaviour every 5 seconds. It becomes tiresome and distracts from the plot. Aside from this, the visuals are beautiful and the story is engaging. It's a shame that Suzu is just so unbearable to watch/listen to but at least the songs are ok. The best friend is the most watchable character, although even she loses the plot towards the end. Ugh, why can't female characters just be NORMAL??
Your Place or Mine (2023)
Not too cringeworthy
Your typical rom com, all the ingredients are there. Witherspoon and Kutcher are believable as love interests so that's half the battle won. The story itself though, is a bit... dumb. The story just rambles and it seems aimless at times. There are useless characters (Steve Zahn, Tig Notaro and Zoe Chao were such wasted talents in this). The cliche airport scene was the biggest eye roll. Ofcourse they're going to declare their love for one another at an airport, because that's apparently the only allowable place for such declarations. Overall though, it's watchable. If you want a bland, watchable rom com with
a cast that's easy on the eyes, then this will do the trick.
The Imperfects (2022)
Sort of enjoyable
Very watchable. Tilda is by far the best character, she's witty and fun to watch. The other characters are annoying as hell. There's meant to be a love story between Tilda and Juan, but there is absolutely zero chemistry, so this story seems so fake and forced that it's painful to watch. The main storyline is interesting, but the geneticists are far too young to be believable. Dr Sarcov is played by a comedian and it shows. His character is the furthest thing from an actual doctor, I think it was a joke when he came on screen. What on earth was the casting team thinking?? But despite all of these issues, it's still fun to watch.
Rough Night (2017)
So so bad
The Australian accent is just offensive. Why couldn't they have just gotten an Australian actress to play the Australian character?! The so called "friends" are cringeworthy. The plot is not funny and unoriginal. It's a female version of The Hangover except far, far less funny. Why was this film even made?! Most of the actresses are actually talented (except the one desperately trying to do an Australian accent), however their talent is wasted in this disaster of a film. There are so many well known actors in this, so it's confusing why they would want to do this dolm. Did they read the script?! Don't waste of your time.
Falling for Christmas (2022)
So so so bad
Wow. Just, wow. While I'm happy that Lindsay Lohan is doing well and seems to be making a comeback, this movie was SO BAD. The storyline is predictable, but that's ok, it's a standard Christmas romcom so I wasn't expecting anything groundbreaking. It's the acting that is just shockingly bad. It's laughable at certain points, e.g. The skiing scenes where they very clearly used a green screen and it looks about as real as an 80's monster movie. It seems like Lohan has a very long way to go in getting her acting chops back in shape, and I look forward to that happening for her. So maybe we should expect to see some shockers in her journey towards this. This movie is a prime example. Only worth watching in order to lend Lohan some support. Aside from that, it's just really, really cringeworthy.
Fate: The Winx Saga (2021)
Boring
Good grief this is such a boring show. Bloom is the worst character, completely narcissistic and arrogant. They're all meant to be 16 year olds, yet they all look 25. The characters that pair up romantically are laughable because they have zero chemistry. Each coupling in the show is so awkward and lacks any sort of real connection. It's things like this that makes the show more laughable and ridiculous than interesting. Only positive thing is the diversity, but it seems to be only with the female characters. The male characters are all the same, boring, standard tv male. The weirdest thing is that they clearly have technology because everyone has a smartphone, yet the 'army' guys use archaic weapons like swords and knives. It seems like no one's heard of guns somehow, despite surely being able to google it on their smartphones! The whole show is just a bit.... dumb. At times the storyline is vaguely interesting, but as soon as you think it might get better, it goes back to being dumb. This show could have been so much better. But it's not. I'd love to see a darker, grittier version of this series.
Harlem (2021)
Black sex and the city
It's entertaining, think of it as the black 'Sex and the City', but far less witty, far less relatable, and with bad storylines. The only thing positive about this show are the strong female bonds. Everything else is so cliche that it's cringeworthy. The storylines are very 'white', and very patriarchal in a weird way, sort of like what you'd expect if the show was written by a sexist white man. All of the characters' lives revolve around sex and money, and while that's not necessarily a bad thing, it's also a very tired trope. I don't actually think any of the characters adequately represent a real African American woman.
The Most Hated Man on the Internet (2022)
Brilliant
David vs. Golaith story, where Goliath is a misogynistic sociopath. Brilliantly told true story about Hunter Moore (misogynistic sociopath), and the virtual army of good guys who came together to take him down. A must watch for any teen who doesn't yet understand the permanency of the internet.
The Terminal List (2022)
Loved it!
Great storyline, very good acting and dialogue. Not sure why people are complaining that the lighting is bad, if you've got a half decent TV, it's fine. I watched all of season 1 in two days, and not once did I think the lighting was bad. Anyway, if you like action films where the good guys kick ass, you'll love this.
Interceptor (2022)
Poor man's Die Have movie
The storyline is flimsy, but that's not always a deal-breaker as long as the acting and script make up for it. Unfortunately in this movie. It doesn't. I hate to say it, but as impressive as Pataky's physical capabilities are in this film, her acting is pretty bad. The script is all over the place, the characters themselves are so cliche that it's at times painful to watch. Chris Hemsworth has a bit part that's completely useless. The whole movie is a massive "meh" moment.
Deep Water (2022)
Train wreck of a film
Nothing makes sense. The best part of this movie is Grace Jenkins simply because she's adorable and her character brings some enjoyment. Affleck shows about as much emotional range as a wooden spoon, and Ana isn't convincing as the provocative swinger wife. The movie has so many plot holes that when it ends you're wondering what the point of it all was.
365 dni (2020)
1 hr 54 mins of your time you'll never get back
I don't even know where to start. There are obvious parallels between this film and the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, but 365 Days makes the Fifty Shades movies seem like Oscar-winning, cinematic genius. Yes 365 Days is that bad. Even if you're able to look past the film trying to pass rape and sexual assualt as 'romance', or the portrayal of women as mindless, gold-digging bimbos, or the painfully stereotypical hot Italian gangster, it's hard to look past the terrible acting, plot, and ending. This film is equivalent to a car crash, but let's face it. No one is watching this for the story.
12 Gifts of Christmas (2015)
Worst. Acting. Ever.
The premise is fine, plot is fine, but the acting is SO BAD that the film is difficult to watch. The film itself is very cliche, it's the standard cookie cutter Hallmark Christmas movie, which is fine if you want something light and meaningless to watch. If the acting was better the movie would be more watchable. Unfortunately it's not.
Booba (2014)
Just creepy
What on earth is this show?! I can't stand that thing, he sounds like a creepy old man trying to get his jollies on. The storylines don't make any sense, though I suspect there isn't meant to be a storyline. I don't understand how this show is for children, because Booba is not pleasing to look at, and the noises he makes are weirdly concerning. There are SO MANY excellent children's cartoons, I don't know why this one has airtime. I wish I could give zero stars.
Raising Dion (2019)
Good so far
I'm only up to episode 5, but it's really quite good so far. The storyline is interesting (if you don't look too deeply into the 'why' and 'how'), and Dion is very likeable as a 7 year old struggling with his newfound powers, fitting into his new school and making friends, as well as trying to do the right thing by his mother. There seems to be a shift in TV shows towards examining how a child with superpowers would develop and cope in this world as opposed to an adult, considering the latter has now probably been done to death. This perspective looks at a 7-year old's concept of powers, priorities, and responsibilities. It's definitely interesting. The most enjoyable character is, without a doubt, Pat. He provides some comedic relief as well as mentorship and guidance for Dion, who appears to get next to nothing except anxiety-provoking interventions from his mother. Speaking of which, I'm not sure why the writers decided to frame Dion's mother as such an air-headed, incompetent, disorganised, idiot. She's irritating to watch, as she fumbles through event the most basic of tasks. It got to the point where Several times I considered switching it off because her constant but avoidable stuff ups through life were getting so annoying. Aside from her however, the rest of the show is worth watching.
Christmas Wedding Planner (2017)
Garbage
What on earth did I just waste my time watching. I knew this would be a fairly generic romantic drama, but the acting at times was flimsy, especially from the lead Kelsey, who is a mix of annoying, incompetent, and mildly amusing. The The other characters in the film come across as fillers, they don't really provide much towards the film's plot. It doesn't make sense that Kelsey would find out that Connor is trying to sabotage the wedding.... yet tells nothing of this to her supposed best friend/sister and bride, Emily. Who doesn't tell the bride?? Especially if you are the wedding planner AND a member of the bridal party AND a member of the bride's family! I mean...??!?! But the worst part was at the end. The end, when Connor stupidly proposes to Kelsey after knowing her for.... what was it, maybe a few days?? She (strangely) says yes. She agrees to marry a man who refused to be honest with her when they met, and continued to be dishonest with her while they "worked" together. I don't think I've ever rolled my eyes this much in a movie before. Don't waste your time watching this.
Sex/Life (2021)
Waste of time.
The lead character is unbelievably painful to watch because she's an absolute moron. How the hell does someone who is (apparently) and trained psychologist be this much of a mindless bimbo, falling for the usual garbage from an abusive ex-boyfriend?! We're all getting a bit sick of abusive men being portrayed in some pathetic, romanticised way as poor damaged little boys deserving of seconds third, forth chances. Don't waste your time with this show. It just makes you angry.
Bridgerton (2020)
LOVED IT!
I was a bit wary of this show given the poor reviews, but I absolutely loved it! It's obviously not a show that requires much thinking, but it's entertaining if you can get past the inaccuracies of the show. It's not meant to accurately reflect the Regency period, it's more just for show. The characters are likeable and easy to watch, and there is enough drama to keep you watching. It's the TV equivalent to a trashy romance novel, but with bright visuals and a slightly more elaborate script. Definitely give it a go if you're after something entertaining (as opposed to intellectual) to watch.
Enola Holmes (2020)
Snooze fest
I was so excited to watch this, being a big fan of the older Sherlock Holmes films, but this was honestly nothing more than a snooze fest. The cast was impressive however the storyline was incredibly boring. You'd think a film revolving around the mystery disappearance of Sherlock Holmes (and therefore Enola Holmes's) mother would be somewhat exciting.... but it isn't. Probably the most infuriating thing about the film is Enola herself where she insists on speaking directly to us, the audience. Yes, we get it, you're a young and curious girl about to go on an 'adventure'. Just shut up and get on with it will you?! Sadly, the 'adventure' just never eventuates until maybe the last 10 minutes or so where there is a brief and extremely boring moment where Enola and her love interest are being shot at. But neither is seriously injured ofcourse. Throughout the film, the so called 'puzzle' regarding Enola's mother's disappearance unravels excruciating slowly and with seemingly very little effort or any real detective work. About a quarter of the way into this film, I was looking at the clock wondering when it will end and debating whether or not I should just switch it off early. I persevered on the silly notion that perhaps it will get better. Unfortunately, it didn't.
Cursed (2020)
Boring characters, boring storyline
I really wanted to like this series. Katherine Langford is a great actress and I loved her in 13 Reasons Why. But her performance here is dull. She is not convincing as a "queen", or even someone who is the slightest bit tough. her performance is even annoying in parts. The special effects are so bad it reminded me of an 80's sci fi movie. It's almost like this show is trying to be a bit of Game of Thrones, but without the great storyline and amazing, complex characters. Which doesn't leave much else. Towards the end of the season I was forcing myself to finish it, purely to finish it rather than actually being interested in what happens, and that's never a good sign.
Three stars purely because I liked the graphics in between scenes. But that's about all I liked in this show.
