The Gray Man (2022)
It's not black or white, it's gray
The film is aptly named gray, as it is something in the middle, a little bland and forgettable.
We have to admit the life of the CIA agents is exciting. However, the movie went overboard with the stunts and rather repetitive action sequences. On the plus side, we got a tour around the world (literally) and we saw the actors wear some nice clothes. I was astonished the movie's budget was that high.
Deep Water (2022)
Bland thriller that tackles important topics
Without going into details on the script, this movie really highlighted some important issues facing today's modern society. What, if anything, happens when your wife enjoys the company of multiple other men? What would you do to save your marriage? Although these burning questions do not get a definitive answer, they are all worth exploring.
I ranked this movie a 4 out of 10, since it was not the most thrilling, although it was beautifully shot.
Only Murders in the Building (2021)
Tour de force by Selena Gomez in a poignant comedy series
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of Selena Gomez's acting. She deserves an award for her nuanced portrayal of Mabel. She is also a singer and a dancer, not to mention an accomplished businesswoman. Is there anything Selena can't do?
Steve Martin and Martin Short also shine throughout this comedy series that has a heart. It was very poignant at times and I almost shed a tear. A big one. I enjoyed the series and I am looking forward to the second season. That type of shows that mix comedy and drama provide much needed escape for a lot of people around the world.
Devs (2020)
A feeling of uneasiness in this atmospheric sci-fi thriller
There is a feeling of uneasiness in this sci-fi crime drama thriller, which is masterfully created by combining images and sound. The atmosphere reminds me a little bit of the peculiar work of the great director David Lynch. Good performances by the cast and an interesting plot. Yes, the concept of the evil corporation, owned by a delusional mastermind, might be a bit overplayed. But many corporations do indeed exhibit such characteristics, as current events show.
Uncut Gems (2019)
Sandler shines bright like a diamond in a raw thriller
This is a dynamic thriller which shines light on the fast-pace life of diamond shops. Although the plot is not overly complicated, it touches on important issues such as our obsession with celebrity status and the overwhelming excessive indebtedness of small business owners. The real standout is Adam Sandler, who proves yet again, his tremendous acting potential, by delivering a nuanced and believable performance of someone who is pushed to the brink, while indulging in a dangerous, yet addicting lifestyle.
The Intruder (2019)
Tour de force by Dennis Quaid, Meagan Good shines in an effective thriller
I agree with some others that the plot was not extremely original and could have been done better. But this movie achieved its goal of providing some edge-of-your-seat moments. Also, it touched on some very important phenomena in the world such as people's (in)ability to let of of material things (in this case a house, that the owner is emotionally attached to).
The best thing about this movie was the splendid performances by the lead actors. Dennis Quaid really did a compelling performance of emotionally unstable but a determined individual who has lost a few things in life but does not want to lose his home. Meagan Good delivered a very nuanced performance, which blended into the movie seamlessly.
Overall, an enjoyable ride for people seeking familiar but still welcome thrills.
Devil's Knot (2013)
Mediocre and redundant film based on a well-known case
While not absolutely terrible, this movie seems quite redundant, given the large number of well-produced documentaries on the case of the West Memphis 3. I have seen all of the documentaries and I was able to follow the plot but for someone who has not seen them, the action might be confusing. Indeed, the case is too complex to be condensed in 2 hours time. As a standalone film this is not a bad effort but at times the plot does indeed look convoluted. The performances are decent although not great. Reese Witherspoon stood out as one of the victims' mothers. I expected a little more from the esteemed director Atom Egoyan but this was one of his weaker efforts.
The Good Neighbor (2016)
An average thriller but spot on regarding current youth
This movie was an average thriller. Yes, it had some chilling moments but probably not enough to keep the viewer's interest. Caan was good as the mostly confused old man who looked somewhat menacing. However, the movie is spot on when it comes to depicting the current youth's obsession with filming stuff, in this case as part of some "experiment". In this day and age, anyone with a half-decent camera can film whatever they like and this is a growing threat to privacy as we know it. Overall, a decent movie but somewhat lacking in chills. No edge-of-the- seat stuff here despite the intriguing premises.
The Frozen Ground (2013)
A chilling realistic serial-killer movie
I have been interested in serial killers for some time now and I am familiar with the real story upon which the movie is based.
Although Cage and Cusack have starred in some sub par movies over the last few years, they are both quite talented and give excellent performances in this effort. However, the real star of the film, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, is Hudgens, who makes her character look very real and believable.
Although the plot has been heavily misused in other films in the past and is not in itself very original, this is not your typical serial- killer movie. The movie manages to be compelling without going over the top with too much gory details. The atmosphere it creates is very authentic - it really takes you back 30 years ago in Alaska, when these gruesome events unfolded.
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011)
Terrible boring movie
Honestly, I don't know why they chose to make another MI movie.
The plot is boring, it does not really go anywhere. I did not care about any of the characters. I would even say that the Ethan Hunt in this movie is completely different character compared to the older flicks. No chemistry between the actors whatsoever. The jokes were not funny.
Many people say MI 2 sucks, but it is a masterpiece compared to this latest installment.
If you still wanna watch it, wait for the Blu-Ray version and watch it while fast-forwarding.
I rarely write reviews, but I had to warn you.
Trespass (2011)
Another stupid Cage and Schumacher movie
I wanted to see a new thriller expecting something like Panic Room and hopefully something that exceeds it in terms of plot and suspense. Boy, I was wrong. Where do I start ? First, the whole premise is unrealistic and not convincing to say the least. If the character of Cage just had a little sense he will have avoided all the trouble that followed and there would have been no movie. The plot is not really original or intricate. The performances are so so. Cage plays the typical confused character he has played for the last 20 plus years. Nicole Kidman is all right and nice to look at but nothing else. Their daughter gives a solid performance. They were trying to include some references to the recession and its impact on the life of this supposedly wealthy family. For me, it didn't work. I couldn't really relate to any of the characters and did not feel sorry for their misery. If you want to watch a movie with a similar plot, go watch Panic room. Do not waste your time with this one.
Saw II (2005)
saw 2 not as good as the first one
When i heard that Saw would have a sequel i was very happy awaiting another masterpiece to come to the world. And i had solid reasons. Saw was one of the best thrillers i had ever seen. The strongest feature of that movie was its brilliant plot but it had many other advantages, too. Is saw 2 going to be better or as usually happens worse than the first part?Definitely it is not a bad sequel. Actually it is pretty damn good.It is scary. It has a decent plot. Some good actors.A lot of suspense and extreme situations that will definitely catch your attention. That was not the kind of movie i expected, though. The first one was very realistic with few exceptions. The second is far more unrealistic in many different aspects of the plot. And in addition it contains some even fantastic elements. And the blood is too much as well. There are new shocking ways of dying but not as terrifying as those unforgettable moments from the first one. My basic point is that the second film has gone into the wrong direction. Everything that was a major advantage of SAW 1 is somehow distorted in the second part. The stress is too much on the physical rather than the emotional and psychological state of the characters. The second part i not as intelligent as the first one.It is pretty much a horror movie. It is a little bit elementary. Still it is one of the best movies i have seen recently and it is worth watching. But when you have seen a masterpiece usually you expect more from the sequel. That is the horrible destiny of the sequels. They always bear the weight of fans'expectations. Though this movie is not my type it is good.I have one last thing to say: do not make more saw sequels, please. It will be too much of a distortion, i believe!
