Reminiscence (2021)
2/10
Well that was 2 hours of things
22 August 2021
What a mess. Having watched this movie I can confidently tell you I have no idea what it was about except some memory machine that only High Jackman can control or something, but maybe not because his employee goes to work somewhere else.

This movie has everything- a futuristic war that has no real meaning to the story, internment camps, floods, eels, and a super addictive future drug. None of these things mean anything either other than the fact that people mention them.

There's a 1930's gangster film inside a film set in a clock shop where the characters stand and wait to talk to Hugh Jackman several times as if they are NPC's in a video game.

But really it's about lost love, and memories, and remembering memories and a kidnapped child for some reason.

They could only afford 3 sets, so the whole movie basically takes place in the same room but also in memories. Don't forget that.

If it's not for you at least skip to the last scene

Slow burn kinda nothing happens 89's indie film, I don't mean that in a bad way. Very worth watching to see Richard ze Grant shine in his first role. Even if it's not for you skip to Grant's soliloquy at the end.

No Wave New York
10 July 2021
This is a cult classic no wave New York slice of life kinda film. If you like early Jarmusch you'll did this. Siedleman directs this no-budget flick between the excellent Decline of Western Civilization punk documentary and just before the mainstream Desperately Seeking Susan. Wren is proto-"Susan", if you want a glimpse of the world the Madonna character came from you'll get a good idea here. If you want a look at the run down abandoned New York City of the early 80's you'll get a good idea here.

13 Reasons Why (2017–2020)
9/10
Pretty well done
8 May 2017
OK- so typical how the hell are these high school kids (what's with all the tattoos?) How is Tony driving a $20,000 vintage Mustang? etc.

But in general this is really well done. You'll want to yell at Clay to just friggin listen to the tapes a few times, but that's the shows structure.

Little frightened they have this listed as 2017-?, this really should just end where it ended.

Honestly, I wanted to like it.

Wow, you know I probably agree with most of the ideas they "want" to send, but this show is just really obnoxious.

They visit a "alternative" healer to simply mock him, and it's so mean spirited it's sad. It's not "science!" ha, it's ridiculous! Yet the only science I've seen on the show to this point was a very dramatic lighting of a Bunsen burner to boil some water with food coloring.

I really question how they would ever get a person to sign off on the rights to use that footage in such a slanderous/mocking fashion.

One guy on the panel actually has really good points to make about ultrasound, and other real world facts but he's basically shut down because "science!"

Then an Aziz Ansari wannabe lectures "white people" about cultural appropriation in what I think was supposed to be a stand-up routine. They call back some shots from the alternative-healers office with shots of his Buddha's......... I'm sorry are white people not allowed to be Buddhist? I know a good many- I guess I should tell them to stick to white people religions.

And is this a show for kids? Or just kids who grew up with Nye?

Saying "Science!" isn't scientific

What a bizarre and mean spirited vibe this show has.

Their way of debunking alternative medicine was simply to make a mockery of the person who's practice it was, all the while stressing there is a placebo effect and they don't know why- but obviously that man we filmed is foolish!

Then I'm told white people aren't allowed to be Buddhist because it's cultural appropriation- what science is that??

I know a lot of people are fans of Bill Nye- but I just can't understand this show. The performers all seem so impressed with themselves and yet every segment is a lackluster dud. Does boiling water with some food coloring really need such a dramatic build up?
