For Sama (2019)
Trauma inducing documentary about Syrian Cvil War
Wow, what a poignant documentary! It chronicles a protagonist from the time she is a university student to abandoning her hometown for her daughter, Sama. The interesting fact about this documentary is that she is the one who filmed the all scenes which tell about the harsh realities of war while being hopeful and optimistic. This documentary also serves to be a message to her daughter, Sama that all of the sacrifices they have made are all for her, and they do it out of love.
Walk Run Cha-Cha (2019)
Utterly cute, and short documentary about love
This short documentary showcases a Chinese couple in California who is able to keep their love alive and strong through dance.
As simple as the dance is, they are able to reunite again.
Life Overtakes Me (2019)
a must watch documentary about a strange psychological illness
In short, this documentary is about a psychological illness named Resignation Syndrome. The setting is in Sweden and this doc tells of its horror by chronicling families' misfortunes.
It is very informational, short, and to the point, which is exactly the way I like it.
American Factory (2019)
Compelling documentary about America and Chinese workers.
This documentary was surprising directed in real time and such factory still exists in which the workers have been trying to find some common ground between the American and Chinese cultures. The clash of cultures has caused corrosion of trust and rift in relationships that caused decline in profits for the investors. Moreover, it also details the sad truth that the American Dream is no longer achievable and the dark omen of automation replacing workers in the factories.
1917 (2019)
a riveting war movie
Imagine yourself wanting to know what it's like to be in the war zone if you have never been a soldier or in war. This movie captures brilliantly the emotions, and moods of two soldiers tasked with mission of delivering a letter that can prevent a catastrophe. The urgency they face while facing dangers right in front of enemies are cinematographically shot scenes by scenes to showcase their hope which is a very dangerous thing, as said by the Colonel. Director Mendes deserves to be praised for his work and proposes us with a question: "Is war really about the last one standing?"
Ad Astra (2019)
Medicoris (latin for mediocre) at best
I am a huge space movies buff, especially that of astronauts. Ad astra turns out to be devoid of any original plot and dialogue. Think of it as a sleep-inducing lullaby. Nonetheless, the only thing worthy watching this film is the acting of Brad Pitt, whose talent was wasted.
Gisaengchung (2019)
unpredictable, eerie and with original horror plot
Nowadays, the horror movies seem to be just about blood, gores, and fear-inducing trite. Parasite is breaking the mold in this category as well as in the realm of Hollywood. The synopsis won't be needed as you need to see it for yourself, and for your own good. The fact that Hollywood has already adapted its plot and is currently in the works with the help of its director proves its ingenuity.
Bujaeui gieok (2018)
Compelling and morose documentary
This documentary is not for the faint of heart as it details the tragedy of MV Sewol sinking that claimed more than 300 lives, mostly school children. It also details the corruption and negligence of the government as it resurfaces more during the investigation. If you wonder how would the parents feel when they lose their children, this documentary evokes the exact emotions and hopelessness the parents are imbued with.
The Two Popes (2019)
Brilliant Biopic for Pope Francis
This movie features the life and path to the coronation of Pope Francis. Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce both play brilliantly for the roles of Pope Benedict and Pope Francis. It is a very riveting movie with hidden messages to the world To be better.
Marriage Story (2019)
Moving, family-oriented tearjerker.
This movie revolves around a family, in which the couple is going through divorce. Spoiler alert: Nicole who is an actress is fed up with the emptiness and obliviousness of Charlie who is a theater director wants a divorce. Both of them are battling for the custody of their child, Henry. Through thick and thins of the divorce battle, they find a common ground on which they can be friends without hurting their child.
Revenge of the Green Dragons (2014)
More like a Revenge of the Green Toads
I had had a hopeful expectation about this movie since its cast are all Asian-Americans, I had really wanted this movie to succeed so that Asian-Americans actors and actresses could get more spotlight in the mainstream American media. Unfortunately, I was utterly disappointed, to the point that I had thought about turning it off.
Clearly, it was like a B-rated movie or a budget movie. I don't want to spoil the plot for you and I just wish that directors and casts had done more and put in more investments and efforts into this movie.
