Paradise East (2010)
Ridiculously hilarious
If the minds behind South Park and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia had a baby, they'd name it Paradise East. The film highlights a dysfunctional (and that's putting it mildly) family whose behavior is nothing short of absurd. But the writing, directing and ESPECIALLY the acting make this movie truly something to behold. The dynamic between the two brothers, Chip and Ernie, is so spectacular that there is a spin off web series on YouTube, the Chip and Ernie Show. I had the pleasure of meeting some of the actors and the director before seeing the movie, but had absolutely NO clue at what they had put together. The actors played characters completely outside of themselves, and had I not met the director beforehand, I would have been convinced he was on crack. The story is 100% original, and the situations the characters find themselves in are hilarious. Two acting honorable mentions must also go out to Bruce Barton, who plays a droll and meticulous Catholic priest, and James Kissane, who I would've sworn was Jack McGee's mobster brother, had I not known otherwise. However you can get your hands on this movie; festival viewing, rental, purchase, LEGAL download... do so. This isn't one to miss. A perfect example of what the Hollywood system is lacking.
Papa (2010)
Great, very personal film
I had the pleasure of seeing this film at the International Film Festival of Ireland in Clonmel, Tipperary. For someone who did not know what it's like to lose his father, I was able to relate to the sentiment; to the credit of this film. It was clear from the outset that this was a very personal journey for the filmmaker...the story was refreshingly original and entertaining. The acting was spot on, and I can't wait to see more from these soon-to-be stars.
The film is about a young man who loses his father and realizes their relationship was less than spectacular. To his and his family's dismay, "Papa" appears to him just as he begins the grieving process.
If you have the opportunity to see this film at a festival or (hopefully soon) streaming online...do so.
Rules of Engagement (2000)
Rebuttal to Rovin
I love what user Rovin put in his review. By the way,Rovin,anti-semitism is being anti Jewish, not anti Arab. And those aren't turbins they are wearing in the movie...those are head scarves, which are still widely worn by Muslims, particularly Arabs...which surprisingly is where the film takes place! Who knew?! And I would only assume that Rovin has never been to the Middle East, so I'll just fill in him and everyone else by letting you all know that,I don't know about Yemen, but Iraq is very similar to how they portray it in the movie. But I guess a Canadian would know better than me,or they like to think so. Other than that, the movie is great!
