Farzi (2023)
Starts well, each episode after ep 4 is worse than previous
The show had a good premise and starts off well, but from episode 4 onwards, each one gets progressively juvenile and worse.
Here are some highlights of the unbelievable nonsense...
- the lead cop when leading a major operation and stepping into the action, first makes sure he lights a cigarette and gently strolls
- the same cop looks so out of shape, he can't run up a flight of stairs in the middle of a crime scene
- the female lead in a major crime unit, casually hands over her phone with sensitive info. To a man she's just met
- the crime unit knows where the action is about to take place but don't bother covering exits
- needless divorce side-drama
Black Mirror: Metalhead (2017)
If I could give negative ratings, I would...
Unfortunately the minimum rating that you can give is 1..
Whatever talents the director has, they certainly didn't work for me.
A few reasons off the top of my head...
There is no context as to why three randoms are wandering around...
No purpose for the radio conversations...
The robot is simultaneously omni-powerful, but can't climb trees...
The robot can shoot bullets but stops to pick up a knife...
The robot can spot heat signatures but wanders through the house...
A cliched car engine trouble thrown in towards the end...
If I wanted to watch suspend my brain cells and watch a Michael Bay film, I would...
This is a classic example of laziness + attempt to further milk the BM cash cow + throw in black and white episode to make it seem artful.
Waste your time if you have lots to spare.
Black Mirror: Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too (2019)
Not sure which is worse, Miley Cyrus's acting, the cliches, the oversimplification... or...
Or all of the above
The episode started off okay... but by the end, I can only imagine this got made was as a money-maker.
Combine the van from dumb and dumber, the cliches about loner kids caught up with pop stars, a bit of Britney Spears storyline, evil managers...
throw it into a blender, a bit of editing by a committee meeting and voila... you get this.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Wounded (1991)
Pretty darn good, then pretty horrendous
The episode starts off with some interesting story lines and a Picard special.
Then follows this up with giving a rogue captain, essentially a war monger, free rein to kill 600 more civilians, give a chance to narrate more conspiracy theories.
If that weren't enough, captain rogue gets a slap on the wrist, goes back to his ship, does the same thing by trying to attack another Kardassian ship, and all Picard could do, was try more talking by O'Brien.
Whatever the Kardassian's future role might be be, as of this episode, Picard/Federation's actions in this episode were pretty pathetic.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Casecation (2019)
Reverse the genders and the world would be up in arms
A paraphrased line from the show.. 'think about it for a 5 mins, a week, a month' but I need an answer (yes)... or else...'
If this were a husband telling this to his wife, there'd be an outcry etc. etc. but since it's the other way around, it can be brushed aside as comedy.
A jarring episode if there ever was one.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine: He Said, She Said (2019)
Mockery of the justice system
The core idea of the justice system, innocent until proven guilty, is thrown out the window. Up until half the episode or more, there is no evidence (physical or otherwise) proving one version over the other. But every cop in the precinct involved, seems to have made up their mind. To the point of giving legal advice ('file a lawsuit').. so much for following where the evidence takes you.
Seems forced, jumping on a bandwagon to push a pre-conceived lecture down the audience's throats.
The Wire (2002)
Crisp editing, gritty class
I agree with one of the other reviewers that the term 'best show ever' is often bandied about. But this show hits the mark season after season.
Some other shows in the crime/thriller genre like the Sopranos, felt a tad romanticized and Breaking Bad, going so far away from any attempts at realism in later episodes (possibly to maintain interest).
The Wire doesn't do/need to do any of those things. The realism and brilliant writing and lack of any fluff makes for gritty and compelling viewing. Each season covers a different facet and they all fit in neatly. And like in real life, things are not always hunky dory, even for star characters.
Must watch for those who appreciate intelligent writing...!!
Frasier (1993)
Average, at best
Tried my best to like the show. And some of the non-Frasier characters (Niles, Roz) seem crisp in their dialogue delivery, but even just into the fourth season, the story lines are getting utterly predictable.
For far too many episodes, after watching the first five minutes, I pretty much know how the rest of it goes, including the "jokes"/so- called "witty writing". In the first 4 seasons, I have now seen about 5-6 episodes along 'Frasier meets/likes girl/is set up... things go hot, but the whole thing backfires, with some blabber/angry dialogue from FC'.
Plus, there's one annoying/loud/lame character after another, including Frasier himself. How he's been nominated/gotten these awards is beyond me.
Yes, there are some well-written episodes, but for too many average/ un-funny ones. For the record, just because the characters use lots of French words or blabber loudly, does not automatically make the writing "witty" or "funny".
Still better than the average fare out there, but with too many droll/unlikable characters, this is far from being the best ever at anything.
