El abrazo de la serpiente (2015)
So real, that I even forgot I was watching a movie...
This is the story of two worlds meeting in one: the amazon jungle. I was fascinated by the beauty of the jungle, and charmed imagining tribes still living there. I was devastated by the horrible things we are doing to them, without even being conscious of that.
We'll follow the story of a white man who goes to the amazon to meet a shaman who will hopefully cure his "illness". The film is structured in two different times, past and present - separated by 40 years- where two different men go to meet the shaman. Two different men, but the same reincarnation through the eyes of the shaman. The story was not important itself - personally speaking - the importance was in all the meaning it brings with it. Two worlds, two cultures, two times, two beliefs... meeting in one. Following the characters we'll visit the jungle together discovering the deepest meaning of its existence. Tribes in their habitat, in their time, in their world... and then the arrival of our religion, our beliefs, our problems. We brought our world, into theirs. A shaman that lives isolated from his tribe believing it was destroyed by a war, a shaman who uses natural remedies and isn't connected with his own people who changed because of us, the external world. A shaman who is so connected to essential things of life, in contrast with "us"... again, we always carry so many objects. This is a feeling I lived when I was in India... we give so much importance to our objects, and we often forget the real values of life. Cultures, Origins, ways to live... all of these things makes us different, and we should all respect that. Not interfere. We are destroying a culture, we are killing people, we are killing an era.. because of "material" things of "our" world... we are damaging nature, the amazon and the tribes, without even realising it... we are killing a world, replacing it with our beliefs. With our desire of always wanting more... and more... and more... and at the end we get less. And we don't see that.
This is the story of a world destroying another one, in a magical place that will not survive for long if we keep going this way: the amazon jungle. So real, that I even forgot I was watching a movie... maybe because it isn't.
Yentl (1983)
A strong story shown with a gentle touch.
I don't know why I took so long to watch this movie... it's wonderful.
Beautifully written and beautifully put on screen. Barbara Streisand is adorable, impossible not to get attached to her character. It might even be the similarities we have - our look, being grown up with our dads... - but I felt really emotionally involved with this story. A story that has been shown with a gentle touch saying strong matters. I don't even like musicals too much, but this is much more than that, this is a memoir. A deep tale of a jewish girl in 1904 who is passionate about studying and to do so she fakes to be a man to be accepted in school. It's an intrinsic story, accompanied by her incredible voice that pierce your soul. Yentl is a girl full of passion, full of determination and full of love. Alone. Never forgetting her dad's lessons and keeping him in her heart, she goes through absurd situations that will make her stronger, and will make her fight for women's rights.
The story is shown with love in a majestic way. Impossible not to keep Yentl in your heart after having spent two hours with her. Wonderful. Wonderful...
Retablo (2017)
[...] with a touch of "violence" I'm not used to see.
Peruvian movies are making me talk lately... I went to watch Retablo, few days ago. Winaypacha and Retablo have one main thing in common: they both make you think. Think about life. Think about yourself. Where we are, what we do... what's our place in the world, what we have, what we don't have... Retablo is a story that touched me in different ways. At the beginning it showed me the beauty of something I don't have... at the end it showed me the beauty of what I do have.
A culture, a place, a language, a life style so different than ours. A story of a family that lives in rural Peru, with nature and peace surrounding them, in contrast with the hard work and passion needed to survive. A dad artisan who teaches his son all the secrets of his job, and together they build a strong and genuine relationship that will connect them in a wonderful way. Everything in this film is special and transpires a lot of humanity that in our society is now getting lost... also if with a touch of "violence" that I'm not used to see. A family that goes trough every problem with no fear because they are strongly united, till something happen and all the tone of the movie changes. Here the other side. Not everything different from what we know, is better than what we have. Good and bad halves are everywhere, and sometimes we give for granted things. A secret came out, in a world where the reality is different than ours. Together they are stronger, but the pressure from the society is so powerful that for this dad even the unconditional love of his son is not enough.
Something so unfairly immoral that made me think a lot. Even the love of his son was not enough... even that.
Wiñaypacha (2017)
An intense real movie that deeply punched my soul.
Winaypacha makes you think... a lot. About many things. What are the real things, of life. Of having each other. Of having something to eat that comes from the earth... things we never think about - not even because we've forgotten them, we just don't know them anymore... The era we are living now is destroying us little by little... We are destroying ourselves, and the world we are living in. We say we love it, and we don't know the real value of it.
The reality shown in this movie will make you think: at the beginning of everything. Where do we come from. Where everything started. Let's go back there... that maybe it's better. One of the best and most important movie I ever watched. Arrived in the right moment. Thank you.
SPOILER: ... the matches... the only detail gave them from our society... killed them.
