Growing Op (2008)

Underrated for sure
13 February 2024
Im not usually a fan of weed films or romantic comedies, but I watched this with a lot of enjoyment the other night. The acting from most of the actors was very good, and the chemistry between the cast as well. Quinn and his father were both superb. Some parts were really laugh out loud funny. Enjoyed the plot twist towards the end, took me completely by surprise. Life in Canadian high-school seems to be depicted pretty accurately. Made me appreciate what I have and see the blessing of not being a little tiny gear in the impersonal system like 99% of other Canadians my age. Will look up the writer / director to try and see more of his work.

expected a bit more
16 January 2023
It's a depressing, bleak movie without much sense or plot. The pace is extremely slow. It would benefit from about 30-40 minutes of hallway shots, sad faces, elevators, streets, and so on just being removed. We watched close to half of it before beginning to fast forward. It's also extremely predictable and the music is kind of annoyingly depressing. It is realistic and some of the acting is good but overall, it does not leave one with a lasting impression. The relationship of the woman to her ex is incomprehensible, and the highly improbably death of her child is difficult to believe, Overall, the protagonist seems stupid in the sense of being oblivious to danger and doing senseless things such as driving a mercedes into the ghetto... Which takes away from the believability of the whole thing.. I did not feel any compassion or emotion for the perpetually sad chain-smoking woman, but it was sad to know that the actor playing the boy had ben shot before the film was released.

One star for balance. It's painfully bad.
12 November 2022
I was taken in by the good reviews and thought this may be funny. It's not. Basically the trailer shows all of the funniest parts, beyond that, it's mostly cringe-worthy. I used to like weird al when I was in high school, but I could not watch this even though I was fast forwarding most of the scenes. It's just all around bad. It also is full of propaganda pushing whatever agenda "they" want to push on you at any given time. Anyway the folks who are writing that this is the best thing ever must be getting paid. To me, it was cringe material from the first minute and it did not elicit a single laugh. Waste of 18 minutes of my life fast forwarding this and trying to find one funny scene.

Lost in London (I) (2017)

Tried to like it... Definitely not a great film
30 May 2018
I didn't know this was a "one shot" live movie. For what it is, it's well executed and deserving of praise, however, it falls short if you expect it to stand its own ground. Maybe if we were rating single take live films, this could be an 8,9 or 10.

The dialogue is painfully intense, there is hardly any space to breathe. Camera is shaky, sometimes blurry... Some of the jokes are witty but they are few and far in between. Also you cannot really laugh as you are trying to understand what the heck is going on and what everyone is talking about. The British accents don't help. Overall interesting try but dont be fooled by the positive reviews, this will eventually become a 5 start movie on IMDB

Unwatchable, a waste of time
17 August 2017
We watched about 10 minutes of this, trying to give it a chance. It wasn't going anywhere and was just boring. Fastforwarded...Same crap, same slow pace. Boring, unintelligeble dialogue, no character development, no plot, nothing to hold your interest. Why this movie is rated above 4 or 5 stars is a mystery.

Russel Peters used to be funny, but not in this film. Very weak comedy.
12 July 2017
Utterly not worth watching. Peters was a bright comic and I thought I could expect some jokes from him, but he did not deliver. Most of the "comedy" is dumb and not funny. Watched about 20 minutes of the film, none of it was memorable. The script and the acting is painfully weak. Could have been a decent film if Peters said something funny once in a while. Alas, I do not remember a single intelligent and genuinely humorous line. Very weak film.

The Circle (I) (2017)

Very badly acted out, utterly unconvincing, and boring
9 July 2017
There is no buildup, no climax, no emotional connection with any of the characters, no interesting visuals, lots of annoying effects (text flying across the screen). Terrible acting by Emma Watson, 2/10 at best. Tried to watch it, but its the same slow pace throughout. Probably could have been condensed into a short 15 min film, but as a 90 min movie, its a waste of time.

Badly researched, badly executed, monotone narration throughout
10 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This "movie" could have been somebody's high school project. The graphics are awful, sort of like cut an paste of royalty-free content. The information given (in a horrible monotone voice that gets old in about 15 seconds but persists throughout the film) is incorrect, badly researched and biased. To be honest I couldn't watch more than a few minutes of the film. It was very bad. Do not waste your time.

A film about nothing. Sort of amusing, even memorable, but not a masterpiece
10 May 2017
One of the slowest starts in movie history sets the character of what is to follow. Conversations about nothing, decent acting, a few amusing moments. Somehow you feel a certain affinity with the main character, and the film is memorable despite the fact that absolutely nothing happens in it. A very strange soviet movie, the main virtue of which is originality. Does not have any laugh out loud moments. It is neither a comedy nor a drama.

Overrated. Life is a Miracle was much better.
3 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Not sure why the film has such positive reviews. It is predictable in the sense that you know the main character is getting screwed, you know nothing good will come of it, and you have a pretty good idea how it will all end. You can't do anything about it, so if you choose to watch it to the end, you just end up feeling bad about human beings in general. I did not watch the last 30 minutes or so, because I already knew what was coming. There is very little comedy in this film, and a lot of drama. The drama is good but you have to be into heavy films. I much preferred the only other film I saw by Kustrica - Life is a Miracle. To me that film is a masterpiece. This one is not quite.

Slow and overly dramatic
19 February 2017
It had a good start, and there were some nice shots, from a cinematographic viewpoint, but we couldn't get into the movie at all. I fast forwarded a lot of it, and instead of being touching, as I think was intended, it was somewhat funny. The ridiculous Japanese accents didn't help at all. A lot of it was hard to understand. Fascination with blood and gore, typical of catholicism and the main character made into a sort of Christ figure. I couldn't relate to it, and found the drama over the top and ineffective.

Overrated. First half worth watching, second half is pure filler
19 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed the first half a lot. It gave a good impression of India, raised questions, and made me really care for the main character. I was just about to rave about how great the movie was when it suddenly turned boring and overly dramatic. Julia Roberts cries in every scene she gets. She only acts for 10 minutes tops, probably more like 5, and by the end of the movie her tears seem to be more the result of too many plastic surgeries than any genuine feelings. A secondary character, a girlfriend comes in, and does absolutely nothing for the film. She has no role other than to fill in time and to bring in a textbook elements necessary for a movie's success. She fades out exactly as she faded in. We are also forced to watch the main character use google, over and over and over and over again. For about five years of his life. Had lots of potential, but could have been about 10x more fun
