Mangal Pandey: The Rising (2005)
Magical....
I think this movie released somewhere around Thursday in Wellington, as I walked past one of major movie halls, I saw Aamir Khan moustached new look staring down at me from a Huge electronic poster, now that's first in this country or at least this city(bravo to the publicity team and distributors) and I thought to myself, I really want to watch his movie, as I walked out up to the counter, I saw some sad looking Indians coming back, and stopped by one of them, he looked at me and asked "Rising?", I nodded, he said; "Sold Out", I couldn't believe what I just heard, and was even more surprised to actually go to the counter, that the movie was sold out for the release day, at increased ticket prices and over 2 screens at the multiplex in mention. That's the effect Rising has had...magic! Never seen before by this writer in NZ!
It's Monday night now and here I am sitting in front of iBook, finally writing down my comments about the most awaited movie of the year, and I have already seen it twice, paying double the price of the ticket on both occasions...I really don't know what it is about this movie, whether it's the acting, the direction, the cinematography, or the whole package itself, but I just can't stop liking it, and certainly feel like having a third go...
Everything about this movie seems to be that of an international standard, and Oscars, can't be far away this time round for Aamir Khan. He was absolutely brilliant, and the same applies for Toby Stephens, I tried really hard, but I couldn't recollect any non Indian actor put so much effort into Indian movie, excellent job Toby. Rani Mukherjee and Amisha Patel although overshadowed both in terms of footage and role size as compared to the male actors, left a lasting impression on my mind..Rani especially looked extremely voluptuous.. and Amisha raw beauty. In terms of scripting, I went back to my school days, recognizing the historical figures of India's war of Independence popping up one after the other at towards the end. The movie's direction and cinematography is on level if not above any other Hollywood production and Ketan Prove's his capability in handling large concepts after Mirch Masala. The movie touted as the most expensive movie in Indian Cinema, has all the richness and grandeur money can buy, and last but no means the least, A.R.Rehman's music seems to blend right into the movie, and no the songs did not have jarring effect on me on any of the two occasions.
