Spectral (2016)
Clyne could be the Sherlock Holmes of Techno-Thrillers
Clyne could be the Sherlock Holmes of Techno-Thrillers. His character is based around a core narrative concept where an investigator gets thrust into an extraordinary situation and uses their single weapon - that is a keen scientific mind - to both investigate and find a solution to the problem. On the surface, the movie threatens to be yet another reel with great graphics (and oh boy, they were Great) with a predicteable plot, but it offers just enough for it to be worth the watch. The fact that the beginning scene only sought to ground the character rather than end up being a cliché Chekov's Gun, the fact that the resolution wasn't necessarily up to military might and a last boss battle, but a moral solution that is only a band aid in the long scheme of things, really endeared this movie to me.
It's an extremely slim hope, and I might be blown away by the amazing military tech and vfx that was paraded around, but I'm confident that Clyne could make a great character to build something upon. I really feel that his story isn't over, whether he returns to making the newest technologies for the world, there are plenty of military horrors that could emerge that could require his unique genius and unflinching in the face of danger.
Arrow: Eleven-Fifty-Nine (2016)
Very frustrating on a meta level, but piques my curiosity
I don't think anyone is in the dark about the events of this episode, so I'll just get to my opinion on the matter.
First, the good (of which is completely tarnished by events in and out of the show): The shocking death of the major character undeniably makes me curious about what happens next. It has me hoping that GA becomes ruthless in some form or the other, and that he actually becomes competent in his fighting. It also shocked me emotionally, and my rule of thumb is that any show that makes me feel something about a character deserves some points.
But thats' as far as I can go with complementing the episode, because there is a lot of disgust at how things are being handled and at the writing. At the death scene, when Felicity comes in and is mentioned in the characters' dying breath and once again perched to the holy angelic heights the producers and writers seem to consider her to be, I felt disgusted. It felt... Wrong. I was actually deep into the episode until she appeared and I remembered what had happened to Arrow.
You cannot consider this episode alone on its own merits, because while it does give some shock factor and intrigue, you have to notice how badly the show has gone into the dived due to the way its being handled. I can only hope that the voices of the fans and their outrage is heard, because this is not Arrow. I think I will have to see the next episode out of curiosity, but for all intents and purposes I would rather watch the other undeniably greater shows out there right now.
Once, Arrow had my trust and zeal as a fan. Even with bad episodes and shows that did better than it here and there I decided to soldier on. But it has lost that completely. I have to see it objectively on its own merits and compare it to others... And see that it is severely lacking.
Arrow: Beacon of Hope (2016)
Indeed A Beacon of Hope
On the heels of last weeks' episode, I was watching this episode with an ultimatum in mind. Things that had been frustrating me for the season since the start went wrong in all the worst possible ways, and I was just about done with arrow. The trailer did not seem promising, but I'm glad to say that it lives up to its name.
First, the good.
The opening scene just jumps right in there with a cool sparring scene, showing a glimpse of the well trained Oliver we knew. Between the banter and the introduction of Curtis, the light hearted feel has really done favours for the episode, and I found myself smiling for once as I watched Arrow. I prefer the dark and gritty, but it's also great to have fun with an episode, and I immediately felt optimistic about the rest of the episode.
Trick arrows once again make their appearance! It's almost as if the writers knew the grievances that people had with the previous episode. Oliver is very human and answers our thoughts that wonder why he isn't so badass when it comes to relationships. Felicity did not irk me as she did, feeling more like her old character. Was great to see why I liked that character in the first place.
The fact that I have so many things to talk about and point out in the episode just means I'm looking forward to the rest.
The bad is that once again Oliver got KOed in the episode. Understandeably he got stung and isn't at top form, but I'd love to see more of his skill again at a point.
The Flashback was ignorable in the last episode, but here it is downright lazy. They need to bring more context or at least some goal to it.
But if I go any further I'll just be nit picking at personal preferences. Honestly, I enjoyed this episode. It was a fun watch, and I'm looking forward to the next.
Supergirl: Worlds Finest (2016)
A Fun watch and A Peak for the Series.
Supergirl has been hard for me to get into. Between the fact that we never get to see Superman (Something I think shouldn't be anymore if it's not the same movie universe) and that I personally have problems with her concept, I started watching it with an even more skeptical outlook than I usually do.
It has a slow start. The episodes are not perfect, but I feel since episode 13 I've grown to like the show and the characters. They stick in my head, they are memorable, and so fun.
And did I laugh this episode or what. This episode was like a fine breeze as the sun comes out on a spring day. I think they should take more cues from the super hero fight choreography from The Bizarro and Master Jailer episodes, but the conclusion gave a nice twist, and oh does it have me drooling for any possible future crossovers.
A DC TV Universe is more and more not only a possibility, but something that just needs to happen. Of course, I hope that the writing for Supergirl doesn't go slack and keeps on trying to bring new things (I especially look forward to a second season with original plots and villains) but yeah, I think I can finally put both my feet in and say I like this show.
I'll admit I'm biased because I really enjoyed this episode. I think I could point out problems if I went looking for them but the prevailing feeling I got from watching it was joy interest and hope.
It does a good job of leading up to the upcoming episode.
Arrow: Broken Hearts (2016)
This is Not the Arrow I Came to Love
First, the good.
Laurel Lance has come a long way from frustrating me to no end. She's actually doing her job as an attourney, and she works hard and without complaint in Team Arrow. I'm glad she's evolved to such a state.
The court scenes were actually good too. They served as the one and only solid ground of logic, but out of that? It's a hot mess.
I have no particular feeling about the current flashback and am willing to wait how it progresses, but the actual main storyline has been too much of this relationship drama between Oliver and Felicity.
I have nothing more to say if this is truly the end of that relationship and a return to focus on TGA and his mission, but I suspect it won't be.
The dialogue was pretty bad, and the fight scenes have become pathetic. The Green Arrow can't catch arrows? He can't defeat random bad guys but can defeat The Ras Al Ghul? You must be joking! Arrow cannot continue this way. I did not want a masterpiece of an episode. I would have been fine with an 'ok' episode. But this was just horrible to see and a downright bore.
The Flash and LoT are spin-offs of this show and are doing much better with the same amount of resources. And that's just DC. As a watcher I cannot ignore the way other TV shows are avoiding the same writing problems and doing a much better show of providing amazing comic book adaptations.
The actors are great. I have no problems with the stuff like VFX and the like. My main concern is the characters and the story.
I've lost my trust in this show, but I will keep on watching. I am hoping for some form of change that'll bring it back to the greatness it once had in whatever form... Without Felicity Smoak I sincerely hope.
