Caveat (2020)
Really well done low budget indie
This was a pretty creative, creepy, suspenseful, mysterious little film. It's not terrifying and it's not top level but it 's got a whole lot more going for it on a pretty sparse budget than against it that's for sure.
The Expanse (2015)
I truly wish it could go on forever.
I am super grateful and excited for season 5 very shortly. I am always really skeptical of pretty well all new shows. I love sci-fi but am picky about it. I love 2001, it's a masterpiece and the most ahead of it's time I've probably ever seem. I love Sunshine, Primer, Upstream Colour, The Signal, Britt Marling's stuff, The Matrix movies., but wouldn't touch Star Trek or any of the like TV series'. This would appear to be along the lines of the latter. It is not other than upon first glance. The character development, world building, as much as possible physics is considered, edge of your seat suspense, mystery, depth and often horrific plots and story telling are the best with only 2 competitors in that regard. GoT and Westworld IMO . Maybe most importantly the characters make the exact decisions you'd expect them to make based on their development. Obviously a brilliant show and honestly I feel confident in saying that if you like any of the characteristics I described above and don't hate sci-fi (and probably many who do hate it) you'll love this show. I don't mean this at all offensively but to save you the trouble if you're not very intelligent and you're honest and aware enough to know if you aren't, this show may not be you're cup of tea.
Overlord (2018)
Reviewing some of the viewers.
This was a reasonably entertaining movie. It was perhaps a bit too straightforward for my taste but normally as soon as there's mention of zombies I'm out. Is anybody really terrified of something as unrealistic as zombies? Anyway, it seems some reviewers feel this wasn't nearly hardcore enough. Or that the reviews they'd read before seeing it led them to believe it would be more shocking. I guess this would be to the reviewers who thought this was hardcore and therefore duped some people. I think it's important to remember that the people who are going to see a movie because it was described as shocking, extremely disturbing, made me sick etc are often the same people who have seen every revolting, traumatizing clip om BestGore or YouTube or wherever they have twisted video's who have completely desensitized themselves through years of trauma. Yes, unless your a sadistic sociopath or psychopath the desensitizing is the minds way of protecting itself from more trauma and your lucky because that's a whole lot better than the other options. Truth be told if your a grindhouse and expendables fan you like crazy violence and action and are very unlikely to be shocked anymore by a mainstream movie. It's unfortunate most of the people like this aren't aware of how badly they've been traumatized and are still chasing that buzz. If they were to ask themselves the last time they were shocked or whatever it was probably the nail in the coffin so to speak, the one that sent the mind over the edge into protection mode. The faces on some of the creatures if you will was pretty horrifying. If i'd seen that when I was a kid it wouldn't have been good. With the all access all the time to the sickest min violence and porn any movie maker trying to shock people has a tall order.
Spinning Man (2018)
Straightforward, not really a psychological thriller.
I'm really not sure how other reviewer's are calling this a psychological thriller. The lead and subject of investigation(Guy Pearce) is a linguistics philosophy professor but there is no talk or concepts delving into anything deeply philosophical. I heard someone describe many of the conversations between the lead and his 9 year old daughter Zelda, his wife(Minnie Driver), his students and the investigating detective(Pierce Brosnan) as being of a abstract philosophical concepts and I didn't see this at all. It is basically the lead is paranoid because he has and fantasizes about sex with students. So when a HS girl who may have had contact with him goes missing he is the prime suspect. So after nearly an hour and a half of guessing whether the good professor is guilty it turns out it we were all just being mislead. Gimme a break, literally no twists, no surprise as straightforward and simple as it gets. Fairly disappointing story done with excallent production values and good acting. Just because of these its almost a passing score of 5 but what a boring plot.
Making a Murderer (2015)
Not Even Sure What To Say Never Mind a Title.
After having just now completed season 2 I'm blown away that something like this can happen right out in the open. The sad thing is if the right set of circumstances come together anybody could find themselves in a similar situation. Worse is that if you aren't OJ Simpson there's not a damn thing anybody can do to stop it if they want you bad enough.
The first season was the most compelling entertainment I've ever seen period. The second season is not nearly as good when viewed strictly as entertainment but it takes the frustrating, dirty, corrupt parts from season 1 and just layers one thing on top of the other. After the first season I had concluded that Steven Avery had been set up , framed and convicted essentially because of his $36,000,000 civil suit against Manitowoc County and law enforcement etc. I figured an almost sure to be successful lawsuit of that amount for a place like that would be far too devastating for them to allow it. If it's New York or Toronto that's nothing but that amount would essentially bankrupt that place.
So, because this doc is obviously being told from the perspective of Avery's defence there were people after the first season that talked about how there was alot of the prosecutions case left out. Ok, maybe but after the second season there's only one question that really matters in answering whether Avery was framed by law enforcement. Is Kathleen Zellner just making up the mountain of evidence she presented in the doc? Cause if a quarter pf what she uncovered is true this is the most obvious, right in front of the world case of corruption from every level of law enforcement and the supposed justice system in the world ever.
I can barely even compose myself enough to say anything about Brendan Dassey's absolutely ridiculous confession. I'm sorry but if you watch that interrogation and you can count to 10, you know the alphabet and aren't consistently drooling on yourself you can see that's a completely fabricated confession from a slow, scared kid(with the most rudimentary social skills) who has no idea the trouble he's in who believes if he says what the detectives wanna hear they'll let him go home to his mom. There's no way he should've been interviewed alone and I'm not confident his mother would've been much help. They need to look at amending law to do with interviewing kids like Brendan.
Another thing I couldn't get over is how a couple of the 7th Circuit Judges clearly saw it the same as I did but the one completely defended the detectives and saw it as a perfectly legal true confession. Apparently we didn't hear there reasoning but 3 other 7th Circuit judges agreed it was a good confession along with all the other courts and judges throughout the appeals process other than Judge Duffin . These are supposed to be the best representatives of the law and American justice system at different levels and they're either completely disconnected from reality or they're too part of the corruption. I would love to show that interview to a thousand people who hadn't even heard about that case but were given the basic background information and context and see what they're opinions on the validity of his confession would be. Assuming they were of average social and mental intelligence I would bet every penny I have that there wouldn't be 50 out 1000 who would believe his confession. As others have said it will make you incredibly frustrated and angry to the point of it being hard to watch.
Even when watching a show like Cops I can never put my finger on exactly what it is but most of them there just seems to be something off or wrong with many in law enforcement. They almost all sound the same way to me. You can hear them talking about there family, kids, victims of violence and there words are those of love ,concern, fairness but it's very monotone and there's no hint of feeling, compassion or empathy in the way they express themselves. It's like they know the right words but the expression, body language and feeling that would normally accompany those words are completely absent.
It's the same thing with many of the lawyers, judges and politicians, of course they don't see it the way most of us do, they really don't have those feelings of empathy and compassion that shadow the way most people express themselves and the way they perceive things. The people in positions of power, authority and affluence where most people obey, agree with you or kiss your ass and you don't have the normal everyday struggles of average people it seems to disconnect you from the perspectives they hold.
Some think that means you'll be a serial killer or that you'll torture animals and that's not necessarily the case. High functioning sociopaths are drawn to positions of power and authority partially because it allows you an outlet to live without empathy. They're maybe be a pretty bad person but there position as a politician, police officer or judge allows them get away with it. Very manipulative, smart and cunning. If you like watching a whole lot of sociopaths check out Making A Murderer. Or you can just check out a classic narcissistic sociopath by tuning into the president of the USA.. Come to think of it I'm glad I'm not from the states these days, unfortunately it seems to be a breeding ground for those kinds of people. Way off topic for 3/4 of this sorry.
Summer of 84 (2018)
Seriously?
I read the user reviews and since they were almost universally positive I thought I'd give it a go. The only comparisons between this and Stand by me or Goonies is that most of the main cast is kids.In this example somehow 15 year olds that other than there constant talk of sex, act, look like, and have the hobbies of 10 year olds. My expectations for the acting in a fairly low budget film with mostly children is quite low but this is horrendous to the point that even though it doesn't need good acting to be decent for me it ruins it. It is what I would expect to see from High school students in there first few weeks of grade 9 drama class. Cliched and predictable it completely lacks any creativity or imagination in every scene which I can't tell is because of a lack of concern or just plain laziness. It reminds me a bit of a Canadian 80's micro budget show but even that had much better acting and imagination. I've never been duped worse into watching a movie by the user reviews. I can usually sniff out the fake reviews or at least get some form of picture in my mind of what I'll be watching but this time I was fooled. You guys either need to watch more good movies or be a bit more discerning.
