Cry Macho (2021)

This decade's Madison County?
18 September 2021
Anything Clint acts in is going to be very watchable. For all its iffy production values at times it is still enjoyable. You take a little. Gran Torino and mix it with an even older romantic lead. He looks all of his 91 years and his achilles heel seems to be that he can still be a romantic lead. I love the guy, I wonder who he will romance at 101?

The Right One (I) (2021)
7/10
Not a little love story
5 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The Right One starts off as a quirky little movie. I usually turn 'quirky' off. They are usually such broad humor, not really fun at all and just very irritating. So yes, this movie is quirky but in the best possible way. It is a very serious movie about the deep psychic pain of a young abuse boy who blames himself for the death of his sister. Sounds depressing right? But nope, it is lighthearted,,at times laugh out loud funny. I am so jaded by most movies. This is refreshingly deep and well acted. Each character is well crafted and interesting. Watch it. You won't be sorry.

Good Girls Revolt (2015–2016)
10/10
Most accurate ever.
9 October 2020
This show is not quite as slick as Mad Man but oh, it captures the time more perfectly in a heartfelt addictive piece. I lived in this time period at these girls' age. The music alone is so familiar and well chosen. Its ethos adds greatly to the emotions and excitement of this time. The fashion is spot on. The characters are finely drawn and unique. I knew these women. There is one small inaccuracy. In 1963 when I was in Grade 11 I was the only virgin left in my class. Most girls put out even then to keep a boyfriend. I hope against hope that Sony or someone will pick this up. I would pay for a subscription just to watch this.

Gorgeously beautiful mysterious and an excellent cast
1 December 2018
I do not understand the low rating for this movie. It may seem slow at first, but because the acting and action is rather slow - quite peaceful - perhaps it doesn't suit the modern aesthetic.

However, that being said, it is a simple, beautifully written and acted story based on prayers and angels. But not your usual angels or prayers, a totally real and significant modern take. Perhaps the modern mentality cannot abide such a concept , but for those who can, this movie is a very good experience.

A very Liberal's view of the Vietnam war.
19 September 2017
I am so sick of new generations re-writing history. Yes, much of this is true. But it is just slanted enough to warp opinions. Just the fact that they keep showing the Viet Cong man gleefully express the triumph, excitement and joy over the victories of North Vietnam.

I lived through all the evening news broadcasts of the sixties and seventies. It was a grim grueling time of extreme polarization in the U.S. Nothing was clear. History is so easy to see in hindsight. It is so easy to condemn and blacken one side. Nothing is that clear and especially not the Vietnam war.

This is worth watching for the history, but please take some of it with a bit of insight and wisdom.

Finally something original!
9 September 2016
I am so stoked to review this TV show. Although I don't particularly like shows best on one's sexual preferences, this one does not let that get in the way of the story - so far. How refreshing.

The characters are so perfectly drawn and played. The frail main character battling cancer is not looking for sympathy but faces life with dry humor. The cold detached stepfather is somehow sympathetic as well. The truth in the events are so very attached to reality, and laced with solid humor that does not try to be funny, just is.

I cannot recommend this enough to anyone who is sick of the usual claptrap we have been getting in most comedies.

Stealing Cars (2015)

Excellent movie
18 April 2016
This movie is well worth watching. I am shocked at the low rating being given. The acting is completely genuine. The Story is gripping and important. I can only put the low reviews down to a jaded public. I suppose there have been too many movies made about this subject, but at least it is real life. And it is not overly dramatic. Billy's talk may be over the heads of some viewers, but he is actually extremely intelligent and often quoting from books. It lends real interest to the movie, and is effective at showcasing his thoughts.

Yes, the supporting cast are a cast of familiar faces, however they are all good actors and contribute to the film.

If you go for fantasy and sci-fi as most of the population does, I suppose this is only a 5.4 in that world. But in the world of reality it merits a 10.

Tracey Ullman's Show (2016–2018)
10/10
Best comedy in a long time
18 January 2016
I've now watched two episodes of Tracey Ullman's new comedy show and it is absolutely the best. She does not rely on cheap tinny sexual innuendo that is so tired it should be banned. Her humor is definitely British and European characters but as a normal north American I could not be more highly amused. In fact, laugh out loud belly laugh amused.

Dame Judy Dench as a pilfering, toilet-clogging mischief maker who can do anything because 'she's a national treasure' and Angela Merkel, chancellor of Germany as a sexy torch-singing maven are only a few of the unbelievable number characters in the half hour show. The makeup is unbelievable. It takes a few minutes of watching a male character to realize that yes, it is Tracey!

I hope you take my word for it and try this show. You'll be happy you did.

Truth (I) (2015)
Best actress in a small role!
15 January 2016
Truth is packed with personalities, both in the story and the actors. Robert Redford! Cate Blancett!! Dennis Quaid! Dan Rather! However the very best acting in this movie, as well as the most powerful character, is the actor who is far down the list here on IMDb, and does not even have a photo.

Actor Noni Hazlehurst some may recognize as the tyrannical matriarch from the Australian TV series, A Place to Call Home. It took me a while to even recognize her. Noni's acting is superlative in every second of her role as the wife of Lt. Burkett, the ill, oxygen sniffing codger played by Stacey Keach. Noni delivers her blistering opinion of Mary Mapes' fake concern with just the right combination of bitterness and weariness. Her role may go unnoticed by many, but in my opinion, is the most important of the entire movie.
