She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
I like it
I enjoyed it. Better than some of the other marvel shows. Its less action but its inventive and fun. Its not funny haha per se but its light and still has good main character development. Its nice to see marvel playing in this sandbox and it does make me smile a lot. Its like peacemaker adjacent but the demos are different so they result in different types of light comic fare.
The special effects are tough, so I do get the lowered ratings for that. I don't know the technology but it could use a little work. But 'Titans' beast boy effects are similar so it seems like its hard to make that stuff realistic.

a beautiful slow burn
This show is everything I want star wars to be. It starts out a biiit beige but gets better and then really starts to cook around episode 6. It is shot beautifully and has complex deep performances, some really stellar acting by all involved. Stakes are a wee bit low because we know what happens to the main character (prequel syndrome). But it is so rich and shows different textures than anything I have seen in the star wars universe. Lots of little moments that show how daily life in this universe might be. Its moody, brooding and feels real ( for space fantasy). Kudos to the production designer, cinematographers, costume designers, composer- its really firing on all cylinders. My biggest issue is the endings of episodes. They just sort of end out of nowhere. As you keep watching you realize it is a stylistic choice. I find it a bit odd but now that I am used to it its kind of fun to figure out what odd image they will end on.
The Gilded Age: Let the Tournament Begin (2022)
great finale to ok show
I would not say that I love this show. It feels like a bit of a pale comparison to downton abbey. That being said I loved the finale. It was directed so damn well. And the acting on the show has been stellar, mostly.

season 2 is bad unfortunately
The real problem with season 2 is that it is just not enjoyable to watch. There are really really interesting ideas- learing about the union, the shades of grey of the Polity- but watching Chase brood is a drag. It feels as if the move to hbomax freed up the creatives to get much darker (and add sex scenes which are weird but sure, whatever) The first season was a lot of fun to watch and I was thinking about how it is one of my favorite animated cartoons ever, the story was that immediate and tight. Season 2 is a drag. Its a shame because I dont need a repeat of season 1, I love when shows evolve and change. But this is no longer the show I am interested in seeing. I would have given season 1 a 9 star rating. Season 2 gets a 5.
