Prey (2022)
The only good sequel to Predator (1986)
Finally a good sequel to the original Predator film from the 1980s. Prey doesn't reinvent anything, but transfers it to a new scenario.
We experience the film from the perspective of the Native Naru and her tribe. It is a classic David vs. Goliath story and hence very thrilling. She does not posses any super powers or skills and never does something unbelievable. Actually, we see her increase her skill level throughout the film.
The film starts with her day to day life, shows many beautiful landscape shots. We get a sense of her world, which is beautiful yet dangerous. The film never switches from her perspective, also not when white people appear, which we as the audience cannot understand therefore.
The fight scenes with the Predator are well done with references to the original but with some changes. While I don't think Prey has as much subtext as Predator (1986) I thought it was very enjoyable with an exciting new setting. I only wish I had seen it on the big screen and not on the laptop.
Downton Abbey (2010)
Well produced meldodrama that lacks substance
First of the show the is well produced and the actors are all good. The set-up is interesting as well since we get to see the lordship as well as the servant and get to know their stories. Well, up to a point. The big downfall of the show is the lack of character development. Characters die at random points for no reason other than the shock value. It almost seems as if the writers of the show watched Game of Thrones and thought they should try that, too.
Instead of developing the main characters new ones are introduced constantly. Often it is very clear that this or that character is merely an obstacle that will be removed soon. Downton Abbey possesses some of the worst TV show trades in that it gets you hooked with seemingly interesting characters and make you wait for many long episodes so that you get to see a little bit of development.
Problems are also introduced at random, just like the solution. It is only to the credit of the actors that I stuck with the show for three full seasons. Unfortunately none of them gets to develop and show much range. After a fairly strong first season most characters become one sided. They play the same role, show the same emotion even and say the same things. At all times it doesn't seem like the writers want to tell a story, but rather insert random events that are somewhat interesting.
It is a shame, really, since everything else is well made.
What a Man (2011)
Typical German Comedy
The film tells the story of its male protagonist that has been cheated on. He finds out in the hospital where his then-girlfriend lays due to intercourse-related injuries (you get a sense of the humor in this film). He keeps on defending her, but then his she-friend from school takes him in and, of course, falls in love with him. Then the film works through many, many clichees. In good German comedy tradition jokes are annnounced five minutes up front to avoid that you laugh too much. The romantic scenes are very much over the top and by the usage of light effects the film shouts at the viewer that this is supposed to be romantic right now. Not a single dialogue line is believable. People just don't talk like this.
This film is basically like every other German comedy. So if you like the work Schweighöfer or Schweiger this is perfect for you. Otherwise I suggest to avoid this cheap and lazy attempt on a romantic film.
Suits (2011)
Compelling characters, but problems to hold all the strings together.
The show is ultimately about family, whereas the members of the firm grow more and more together as a family.
The early seasons are definately stronger as over time more and more people know about Mike's secret and it becomes less and less believable. The show also gets more tense as in every episode either Mike's secret is about to be exposed or the firm is in danger. whereas in the beginning characters visit each other only on occasion at home, it becomes a normal occurrance in later seasons. Similarly, characters scream at each other in almost every scene.
I think the main characters are all very interesting and the main reason for ticking with the show. Howver, the show does not succeed in keeping up the tension from the first seasons.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
The death of Star Wars or why people hate The Last Jedi
The Last Jedi has received a lot of hate by fans and I also left the cinema angry. I myself have seen all the films once. I like the old ones, didn't like the new ones and wasn't particularly excited about Force Awakens as I felt it was more of the same.
However, it didn't make me angry as The Last Jedi did. I think my reaction and that of many fans boils down to this: They don't care about Star Wars.
The greatest hero of the old trilogy? A lonely loser on an island that has attempted to murder his own nephew. The Jedi? A bunch of useless and downright dangerous people that do more evil than good and should just die. The force? Something silly to lift rocks.
Fittingly jokes are placed every minute or two also right in the middle of an action scene that should be suspenseful, but are not, because one character starts to ridicule the whole situation.
The problem of the movie is that it has no values. Star Wars used to be about good versus evil. Now those don't exist anymore since everything is relative. Everything is subjective. As such the movie attempts to recreate images from the previous movies and superficially it does so, but since it has no meaning, since the heroes don't defend any values, it has also no meaning for the viewer.
When there is no good, there is no evil either.
People believe in values as they should. So do I. And therefore I hated the new Star Wars movie.
Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life (2016)
Insulting, Destructive, Horrible
Now more than ever I am happy that the cast of Friends never did a reunion. Imagine you would find Joey becoming an addict, Chandler and Monica divorced and Ross cheating on Rachel with a student. This is how you feel after watching the new Gilmore Girls episodes.
I have seen the original Gilmore Girls many times over. The first three seasons are gold. And while the level goes down quite a bit in the last seasons it is still a comfortable place to go to, to relax and enjoy. I never understood why people were asking for more seasons as the content was getting so thin. Aside from some very strong episodes we often had two characters discussing an event that is going to happen then the event actually happens and then they are discussing said event afterwards. But anyway there was heart in the show and you just have to love all the quirky characters.
Hence, I am downright angry at the creators of the show for trashing our fond memories with this revival. It starts out with the fact that some characters really didn't age well, but more importantly everything is depressing. The relationship of Luke and Lorelai is dead. There is nothing going on between them. They live together, but they basically just share a room and she talks about her day while he just follows suit like a dog. Lorelai was a great character in the original, but in this show she is just annoying. She has learned nothing over the past nine years. None of the characters has and apparently nothing has happened in their lives. There are almost no new characters. All we see are the old familiar characters including all the ex-boyfriends of Rory. The relationship between Emily and her mother hasn't evolved one bit. The death of Richard Gilmore is turned into a joke. Not once we feel said as we should. I find this particularly bad as the character wasn't simply written out of the show. No, the actor actually died. And they turn all the scenes related to the death into some weird jokes.
Rory has become a mistress and adulterer at the same time as she has an affair with Logan. Actually she is banging for roof as she is staying at his place whenever she is in London for business. Meanwhile she has a boyfriend that she keeps forgetting. I know this is supposed to be funny, but it is just mean. And to top it of she just has sex with a wookie, just because. As the mother you should worry why your daughter turned out to be such a bad person.
None of the jokes were funny. There is no warm heartiness. It is just sad to see your beloved characters in such bad states and the whole town of Stars Hollow is turned into a creepy place. And we are forced to sit through fifteen minutes of bad musical. I know they want to show that Lorelai is not feeling connected anymore to the other town's people as they all love the show whereas she hates it, but you don't have to show it for fifteen minutes. It just goes to show that there is not much content. There is actually no plot going on. but why? Why haven't the characters met anyone in nine years? Why hasn't the relationship of Luke and Lorelai developed? It is sad to see that we were hoping for them to be together just to be miserable. Why don't do a story with the inn. You could tell so many stories about a newly established inn, but instead it is just running perfectly without even having a chef. Why did they make everything sad, depressing and boring. And why for heaven's sake is the writing so bad. The dialogues are terrible and have nothing of the fast paced wit they used to. Partly because they have nothing to talk about as there is nothing going on. It is baffling to think that the same people who created this wonderful show 15 years ago are also responsible for this.
This six hours are long and not recommended for the fan. I think I understand now how Star Wars fans must have felt after Episode 1. God forbid they make another season. Leave it alone.
