Gundala (2019)
Promising, but not a stand alone
The premise is promising, but this is not a stand alone movie. In fact, it's blatantly an intro to a sequel. As far as I know, the sequel may never come.
The Doorman (2020)
die hard wannabe
Action is okay, but it's completely ridiculous. The plot plagiarizes "Die Hard": It's Easter; an apartment building is under renovation so all the tenants, except two are gone; bad guys come looking for valuable paintings hidden inside an apartment; they are foiled by the new doorman, a decorated, highly skilled, woman soldier. The problem is, in "Die Hard", the hero was trapped inside the building. In this case, anyone could just walk out the building and call police. But no one does. They act like they are trapped inside without being able to communicate with the outside world because the bad guys destroyed the telecom system inside the building. For some unknown reason, cell phones stop working too. It just seems so sloppy to have such huge holes in logic.
The High Note (2020)
Saved by the actors
Standard story with some headscratch-worthy plot lines, told competently. Good acting, however, saves the movie into something.
Braven (2018)
Really?
Do people this sloppy and incompetent still get paid to make movies? This really should have been a simple story with straight forward action. But no, they insult the viewer with endless moments of "huh"? "why"?
The Secret Garden (2020)
It's an empty garden
High production value comes up empty. So much hoopla for nothing.
The Professor and the Madman (2019)
Interesting story, not so interesting movie
About the founding of the Oxford English Dictionary, and the two men who played a central role. Don't know how accurate the broad outline of the story is historically accurate, but the way it is told, so solemnly, righteously, and predictably, makes me think much of the detail was screenplay written.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Nothing "Wonder" about it
This is possibly one of the worst story lines ever. And the way it is told only makes it worse, almost unwatchable, certainly cringe-worthy. You Wonder how do many talented people could have fooled themselves into making this insult to moviegoers.
Jojo Rabbit (2019)
False on every level
Starting with English speaking actors playing Germans, everything about this movie is offensively hollow because it asks the viewers to be on its side on the easiest of all moral standards. Its satire and comedy are painfully wrought. In the end there is nothing but banality.
Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (2019)
As good as anticipated
Simply, it's as good as you would expect if you have been reading reliable reviews. Does not disappoint.
Monos (2019)
Style without a cause
All style amid a beautiful locale. But the kids and everything else is annoying as hell.
Bølgen (2015)
Pretty good until the wave hits
It starts out nicely and calmly as the tension builds toward the inevitable. The wave hits. From there, nothing is believable.
The Daughter (2015)
wasted effort
So everyone in it are good, maybe even terrific. But what could have been a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions ends up being cowardly and lacking in conviction. In the end, just a lousy story that didn't know what story it wanted to tell.
