Luchshe, chem lyudi: Episode One (2018)
Great Series, Weak English Dubbing.. beaucoup mieux en Francais
I've watched the whole series, thus the review is for the series. Like so many Netflix series, it starts off great, as if it was 'real' SF but then-as always, apparently-Netflix adds unbelievable plot twists to 'add to the drama'. I don't need to reveal any spoilers. BUT the acting was so good that I was able to suspend disbelief and keep watching, unlike series like "The 100" which I had to abandon. The actress playing Arisa, the 2nd generation robot with emotions, is so beautiful & talented, you really start to care about what happens to her.
My main beef is the VERY WEAK DUBBING in English. One would think that English would be the most important language in Netflix's world market, and not be an afterthought to the native language of the Netflix series (in this case, RuZZian). But the voice acting was weak, actors were re-used for various characters and it came across as low-budget. That's a shame, since the visuals are so good. So what I did was listen to the French language version, with the English subtitles and that was much better, but that wouldn't help an American. :) It seems that the French company is a world-class dubbing outfit, used to doing major movies with true 'voice actors', while the English dubbers are low budget. En tout cas, j'ai trouve la Version Francaise d'etre super! ('Super'. Now y'all know a French word. :))
Angel of the Skies (2013)
Good Movie. Bad History.
I have studied history for decades, especially WWII military history and the air war even more so. When it comes to historically prescient speeches, I'm starting to think that Marlon Brando's speech where he warned of Hollywood's portrayal of nothing-but-stereotypes is the film version of Dwight Eisenhower's famous warning about the U.S. military- industrial complex. Well, with globalization, the stereotype industry has clearly reached South Africa.
It's a real pity, too, because as a former radar operator I appreciated the genuine-sounding dialogue of the flight crew. But after the characters land on the ground, the realism becomes garbage. When the stereotypically-evil SS officer ordered a civilian German woman to be summarily shot for no reason, I could not continue watching. German officer saw their role as protecting Germans, as all military men do. Yes, the SS were fanatical Nazis.. that didn't mean they killed German civilians for fun. These film makers seem to know or care little of history, whereas I do, because as I like to say, those who know nothing of history are condemned to repeat it. (Yes, that's my line. :))
