The Lodge (2019)
So the plot was dumb
Get over it. Although I do appreciate scripts with more finesse than this, I don't need my horror to be the most well-written masterpiece. As a fan of the genre, my appreciation spans more than just the writing as there are so many more aspects to a horror film than the script. If you're one of those people expecting literary mastery, then watch your high brow horror, eat your vegan snacks, and stfu.
I grew up on some real dodgy 80's classics that didn't have half of the atmosphere The Lodge does. The acting was also really quite good, especially considering the ridiculous things the writers made the father do. Was the movie a little predictable? Yes, absolutely. At a certain point you, as a viewer, must realize you are either watching one storyline or a ripoff of The Others. While the suspension of disbelief in this movie tends to cross a line, the writers were at least successful with a few aspects that aren't the most usual for horror. The dog scene is something that will unfortunately stick with me for too long after viewing.
Jinn (2019)
Don't trust the poor reviews
I was surprised this series only had five episodes after watching them, so I researched what became of this show. It seems that there was much controversy around the female lead kissing two different males. I suppose if it was a man kissing two different females there wouldn't have been any issues with the local government trying to have the show censured. There was a lot of possibility for this show to be great, but unrealistic moral grandstanding stopped an interesting storyline from developing. I've never seen any other Arabic media but I was very intrigued by this.
Some of the detractors mention songs that have nothing to do with the story. For one thing, most songs are in Arabic, so you can be sure the people saying that are speakers of Arabic, and probably hung up on religious misogyny. I'm personally glad that whoever chose the songs didn't try to match story content perfectly with lyrical content. That would be over the top and irritating. The story is the story. I personally don't rely on songs in a movie to tell me what is happening.
Illegally Yours (1988)
Waste of time
This movie is probably the worst thing I've ever seen. I wasted my life watching this. There is no intelligent writing as claimed by the absolute brain dead people claiming so in these other reviews. The review where this person says they "loved it love a 9" by Isabella. Read that review. Apparently this is a movie for twenty somethings who think they are so unique and special and see the world different, and of course, who can predict every movie. In other words, this movie Is for those of basic intelligence who think they are elevated somehow. If you've seen this movie, find the review I'm talking about and try not to gag.
Most importantly, the director and Rob Lowe have talked about how bad this movie is. Anyone claiming this movie is some hidden gem must know better than those directly involved, who have called it their worst film.
Showgirls (1995)
Haters gon hate
It took me twenty seven years to watch this movie, largely based on the joke this movie has become in popular culture.
Make no mistake, this is a cult classic because mainstream culture doesn't get this movie. You don't need to be a dancer or understand anything about Vegas to appreciate Showgirls.
I personally didn't need to see so many breasts but it happened and I survived.
Midnight Mass (2021)
Promising until the end
Someone else commented on the sheriffs sudden back story with 9/11, and I must agree. I'm not middle eastern myself, but I found this scene mildly offensive nonetheless. A Muslim man so worried about the scorn of society thinking he is a terrorist fully twenty years after 9/11 is for one thing, entirely ridiculous. Forcing this moment/storyline to try and what? Gain sympathy for the character? Well you know what? I happen to think there are plenty of storylines for Muslim characters that do not include 9/11, then again, I'm not pigeonholing an entire religion. The writers of this show certainly are.
There were a lot of interesting things happening with the story until the last few episodes. The idea of angels being vampires, backed by the actual Bible verses, was very intriguing. There was a lot that could have been done with the unique premise and slow unfolding plot that was essentially dashed against some sharp rocks in the final episode. Those people calling the final episode a "masterpiece" are probably fans of the twilight series. There other ratings and reviews should be checked for ten stars on such classic "masterpieces" as sharknado and the remake of Willy Wonka.
This could have been decent horror. A reasonably good build and unexpected comparison between vampires and the Bible was given a lazy and unsatisfactory ending. Ethnic/Religious stereotypes and unreasonable characterization destroyed a promising series. Everyone who votes this unhelpful has no taste.
Midnight Mass: Book VII: Revelation (2021)
Endless monologue
They really tried to pile on the schmaltz in the last ten minutes, especially during the interminable monologue given by one of the many characters I didn't care enough to learn the name of. I wonder if a team of writers actually all approved of that meaningless, 5 minute long stream-of-conscience-passed-off-as-heartfelt-catharsis. I was horrified and embarrassed for the actress as she recited this drivel, thinking, she actually had to memorize this?
Glitch: Mum (2019)
Hold on
I may be getting episodes mixed up, but I'm right about everything.
Did they just kill James? Did they just kill James in episode 1 of the season? Talk about foreboding. This felt wrong immediately. This decision by the writers marks the beginning of the path that lead to the season finale (which feels impromptu and unsatisfying) and a panic attack for me. Even though the ending feels entirely lackluster, I really liked the characters by this point. Buffy got to keep her squad. Scott always had Stiles and Lydia. So what in the hell kind of takeaway is this?
The Good Place: Pandemonium (2019)
Chidi Annoying
How are we supposed to like Chidi after this? He's so much of a weak willed loser incapable of social interaction that he needs to be rebooted? Ridiculous. A metaphysical deus ex machina does not exist in the real world; people need to be adults and deal with their problems. Such complete, cowardly inability to be responsible isn't respectable and is essentially the opposite of the moral of this show. Chidi needs to be removed from the show at this point. There is no need for this poorly written nonsense in an otherwise good show. Chidi needs to go.
Locke & Key: Echoes (2020)
Yes Ellie, take this key I found
That is the single worst bit of logic I have seen in writing or in writing a characters logic. When Dodge outright admits to an inability to taking keys from a Locke, and Ellie has done nothing but lie up to this point, could be anyone, is responsible for the death of Rendell, and has been helping Dodge, for what freaking possible reason would anyone of even average intelligence not only allow Ellie to return to her house, where Dodge is, with the keys she brought, but hand her the key to the crown which is also at her house where Dodge is? I hope to god one of the writers for this show reads this comment and is ashamed for throwing such a trash, lazy piece of writing into an otherwise outstanding show. Not only do I now have a bone to pick with the writing, but I have lost all respect for the Locke children as characters and interest in this show I was truly enjoying. What a freaking travesty. BE ASHAMED
