Tropic Thunder (2008)
Satire at its finest
One of the funniest comedies I've ever seen. I was expecting the usual kind of Zoolander/Dodgeball slapstick humor that Stiller is famous for (which I also enjoy greatly, might I add), but this was a tad bit more intelligent than his normal fare. Plenty of stupid one liners, but it mixes in some terrific satire as well. The movie trailers in the beginning were PRICELESS. Robert Downey's character is one of the funniest I have ever seen.
However, this movie isn't for everyone. As with most Stiller movies, it will appeal to younger audiences MUCH more than older audiences as there is still plenty of "childish" humor in it. Still, everyone should watch this movie, because there's an excellent chance that you'll get some laughs out of it.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)
Sappy, Unfunny Chick Flick
From a young guy's perspective (I'm 24), this was a horrible movie. "Sarah Marshal" is just another romantic comedy that everyone has seen before.
Simple Synopsis: Guy is heartbroken when girl cheats on him, he finds a rebound girl, his old girl wants him back but he's moved on so he gets his revenge, THE END. Completely formulaic steaming pile of dog crap. In addition, Jason Segel (who wrote the crappy script) is a terrible lead actor. This dude seems to copy Chandler from "Friends" in every role he is in. He also decided to show his dick 3 times in order to get some shock appeal laughs. This can sometimes work, except it better be in the right situation. In "Sarah Marshall," it just comes off as an extremely contrived way to get laughs.
This is a chick flick in every way imaginable, so I can see how females may have a different opinion than I.
The only redeeming qualities: Kristen Bell is SMOKIN hot, Mila Kunis is pretty hot, and Russel Brand as Alduos Snow in the 2nd half of the movie is actually pretty damn funny. However, none of this will allow me to give this trash above a 1 star. Thats how lame the rest of the movie is.
Juno (2007)
Hated it
I was on a cross country flight to China, and I decided to watch this movie because it had Cera and Bateman in it. I am a huge Arrested Development fan, so I figured it would be decent. Uh, no. This movie sucked.
The simple reason? The "Juno" character annoyed the living crap out of me. I mean, a young adolescent girl acting like she's 25? And that's supposed to be funny? I dunno, I realize a lot of people liked it, but I was not one of them. I had to force myself to keep watching after the first 30 mins in the hope it would get better, but it didn't. At least I didn't pay to watch it.
See it for yourself since so many people liked it, but I didn't get the "humor" in it.
Arrested Development (2003)
Comedy at its Finest
The best way to sum up AD is this: The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This is not a show, such as Friends, where you can simply pick up a random episode for the first time and find the humor in it. The humor in this show is DEVELOPED OVER TIME. Each episode is funnier than the last because it builds on the jokes from all of the previous episodes.
This is also why the show will never be massively popular. It is human nature to want quick rewards. A show like AD, where you must invest time to allow the humor to build, is going to turn off many people. But as the old saying goes, the longer the wait, the bigger the payoff. That is AD in a nutshell.
Michael: Are you wearing Sitwell's eyebrows?
GOB: They make me feel dressier.
Crash (2004)
Overrated in Every Sense of the Word
*Very Minor Spoilers, but who cares because YOU DO NOT WANT TO SEE THIS FILM* I purchased this DVD because it had won the Academy Award for best picture. Directly after viewing it, I crushed the DVD into tiny little pieces and disposed of it because the film is absolute garbage. It should be re-named to "Racial Clichés that Have Been Depicted in Films Millions of Times." I felt compelled to come to IMDb and give it a one star rating because there is no way that this movie should be in rated in the top 250.
Let me just say this: RACISM IS NOT A NEW IDEA. People are lauding "Crash" as if it is some sort of god-sent piece of artwork that is going to suddenly open the world's eyes to racial tensions. All this movie does is compile a ton of characters that are lame racial stereotypes whom we've seen millions of times over. Even worse, there are so many characters masquerading as racial stereotypes that the movie completely fails to perform an in-depth examination of ANY OF THEM. Each of the characters gets maybe 10 minutes of screen time and that is it. For example: You get the bigot white cop, you watch him be racist, you see that he has a soft side, he ends up saving a black woman, END OF STORY. I have no idea how this movie won an Academy Award for Best Picture for it is a poorly executed hodgepodge of stereotypes that goes absolutely nowhere.
