His Dark Materials: The Daemon-Cages (2019)
Amazing
The episode was so interesting that I couldn't believe it was over when it was, I thought that it was only 2/3 way through or something like that.
Very suspenseful, exciting and emotional. Seeing Lyra lie so well is really nice, and the Serafina scene is really cool. As another review said, it could've had a bit more connecting tissue, but I don't really see that as a problem, we don't need every episode to be character-driven, this one was more oriented towards the plot itself.
It is sad that we got to see very little Will, the short scene seemed like more of a "yeah we know that this part of the story still exists, we'll develop it in the next episode". Anyways, the episode was great and I can't wait for the next one. So sad that there are only two more to go.
His Dark Materials: The Lost Boy (2019)
Hard and emotional
In this episode we're introduced to Will, who's introduced in the second book. Since the second book begins chronologically before the end of the first one, I think this is a great move - gives the continuity that the book didn't have in that matter, filling in what would otherwise be time without Lyra in the second season. This isn't a problem in the book and it's used to bring in the second world, but I think it's a great solution for the series.
The episode itself was very emotional and hard to watch, but great nonetheless. The pacing was great and the visuals of Lyra riding with Iorek were stunning.
The only thing I didn't like was the acting of Ruta Gedmintas (Serafina Pekkala), but I hope this improves as we see more of her later.
Another thing I'd like to address is people complaining about daemons not being visible all the time - people, it's alright, we don't want a crowded screen in order to have every single daemon present so that all the nitpickers are satisfied. Use your imagination, if Pan is not visible, he's probably inside of Lyra's pocket, where he commonly is in the books. It's cold out there and he needs to be warm and protected, is it that big of a problem? It's really silly to cling onto such a minor detail while watching such an amazing show.
His Dark Materials: Armour (2019)
Just beautiful
Previous episodes were pretty as well, but this one just floored me with the visuals. So many scenes were shot so well and gave just an extraordinary feeling of the north. Yorek and Lee are portrayed very well, they have the same feeling as in the books. The episode was very exciting and fun to watch overall.
Great continuation of the plot, can't wait for the next episode.
His Dark Materials: The Spies (2019)
So damn cool.
This episode finally got us the Gyptian vote (which could've been explored a bit more), Lyra understanding who she is, THE ALETHIOMETER, as well as one of the coolest scenes of dying ever.
It is kind of a transitional episode, but I liked it, it can't all be fast and flashy all the time, but I think the story is going in a great direction. Can't wait for Yorek and Bill to join the gang!
Looking forward to the next episode!
His Dark Materials: The Idea of North (2019)
Continuing the magic
In this episode, we got the tense relationship between Ms. Coulter and Lyra shown beautifully. I had the same feeling on anxiousness that I had when I was reading the book and I loved it.
The first substantial change the show made over the books was traveling to different worlds this early. I think this has reason and potential, especially since the world that we've seen is the current state of the world, largely different to the world as it was when Pullman was writing the books. This change worries me a bit since I hope they won't lose the grip on that side of the story, but since everything else has been absolutely up to par so far, I trust the change will be for the better.
I hope the series continues in the same manner as in these first two episodes, since this is some of the best TV fantasy I've ever seen.
His Dark Materials: Lyra's Jordan (2019)
Absolutely perfect
I am a big fan of Pullman and this episode is simply correct in delivering the introduction to the story. All the actors were cast perfectly, the scenery is wonderful, the story goes at just the right pace and I think we're in for a treat for the next seven weeks.
Hats off to BBC and HBO, keep it going!
