Sound of Freedom (2023)
Sound the charge
This not an easy movie to watch. It dives into the deepest, and darkest, side of man, and woman. Nonstop action interspersed with stellar performances by all. The good, as well as the diabolical, are portrayed so well you begin to react, in every way. Hate, cheers, adrenaline popping action and exceptional realism is brought full boar. I haven't gone to the movies in ages but this was worth it, most definitely. Just as The Passion of the Christ had its' usual venom spewing haters, detractors and saboteurs yet still prevailed beyond anyone's imagination, Sound of Freedom will do the same thanks to another fantastic performance by Jim Caveziel.
Gunsmoke: Nina's Revenge (1961)
Brilliant acting
SPOILER!!! SPOILER!!! SPOILER!!! SPOILER!!! SPOILER!!! SPOILER!!!
Lois Nettleton (Nina) knew this character like no other. Humble and dignified despite being tortured by a bitter, money-hungry husband. She knew the hurt of that character and played it so well that's why it ranks up there with my all time 5 Gunsmokes, which includes "Long, Long Trail". He takes her almost to the breaking point of physical violence, that's where she asserts her ultimatum, no less with a gleam in her eye, sort of a prediction of what will be.
I would put her performance up there with any other in this series. It's a shame they didn't use her talent more. Her performance of this pitiful Prarie wife would have been enough but she adds the "cherry-on-top" dimension of one finding love all over again in the most unlikely place, on her own property. Her shy quaint Ness that blossoms into full blown love reignites her sensual, loving side and we see this beautiful creature glow in the warmth of true love.
Lois Nettleton poured more heart and soul into this character, so much so, I can never get tired of seeing this episode, nor will you, and it easily stands out as my favorite, along with Barbara Lord in Long, Long Trail. It will definitely stand the test of time, it already has, as being one of the most outstanding performances. The power of her opening scene, nightfall with her husband in the Long Branch and her perched atop the wagon, head bowed, evokes so much pity, especially Marshall Dillon's questioning and her avoidance of accusing her husband of anything not to make him mad, is so heart-wrenching she wraps up the character right there. Bravo, Lois Nettleton, Rest in Peace.
Gunsmoke: Catawomper (1962)
Not bad at all
Despite the 2 bad reviews given this episode I felt compelled to give it a 6 star rating. I saw the story more about Bud Bones than Kate. It was his inability to express his love in words, which men do struggle with, and her frustration with just that. His weak attempts at describing his love, in the only way he knows, "I like your hide", we're just that and so the frustration leads her to think that making him jealous would force him to say the three magic words "I Love You".
Unfortunately her plan didn't work and confused him even more about what she wanted to the point where horse whipping was his only suggestion on what to do. Having been married 3 times I can definitely sympathize on what it's like to look into your woman's eyes and have absolutely no idea on what they want. Their frustration, with each other, manifests itself by him running away to the army and her wanting to go to San Francisco, translation: it's easier to walk away from a problem than be honest with each other and face it head on.
After a life-changing situation in which he saved his fellow soldiers from sure death, contrite as it was, he had a chance to reexamine himself, his life and the things that are important to him, Kate included. It is only after that event that he was able to express his love in words. Being in a military family, father disabled WWII and mother Korean War vets, they always said they came out different people than they went in.
I have watched 2 Gunsmokes a day for the past 6 years so I have seen practically all of them over and over and there are episodes that are worse than this but they are usually entertaining, if the script is bad they usually have some comedy in them so it's not all a wash. I never look at Gunsmoke for writing perfection just a decent story and, to me, this was decent with some comedy and a heck of a catchy song from Chester.
