The Counselor (2013)
Excellent and thoughtfull movie
This film is centered around greed, bad descisions and consequences of the choices made, the world of drugs and criminality is entered in to by a legal counsellor who is a novice and doesnt consider where it might lead. The script is well written and well acted throughout, there is very little action in the film though some grisly deaths do occur, the tension and desperation of a man who has got himself in too deep whilst time is against him is superbly conveyed by fassbenders performance, also cameron diaz must be commended for her portrayal of a femme fatal of the most deadly kind. The whole plot takes its time but was never boring to me at least, this story does not go the way you might conventionaly expect, the brutal climax being the confirmation of this. If you like intelligently well written plots well acted and a non reliance on action then this is a really good watch,im not sure what the negative posters expected, perhaps it helped i had no preconceptions.
Death on the Nile (2022)
Bad beyond belief
First off we get a story to explain poirots famouse moustache which never appeared in any agatha christie novel, this ties in to an ending to the film which is again very much at odds with the character made famouse by the books. Anyhow on to egypt and the setup to get us on board ship to have a murder, some of the characters have been swopped around a bit but all the elements are there one way or another, some completely out of place jazz/blues music permeates much of the film which is from the wrong time period and is not actually easy on the ear in any case, the acting throughout is patchy with some performances adequate, some badly miscast, the boat on which the main action is to happen is also a victim of miscasting, it is a great big luxurious vessel lacking atmosphere or soul, there is no sense of the tight spaces close quarters in the book, there is no real development of the interactive relationships between the characters on board, dialogue is clunky and delivered often very woodenly or conversely way over the top, there was no air of mystery even if coming to the story for the first time, if familiar with the story then you would be hoping to see it well told, which it certainly was not, i watched this with my partner and 40 minutes in she turned to me and asked if we should bother continuing, i wanted to see how bad it could be and watched to the end, it had nothing at all to recommend it apart for some genuinely beautiful landscape shots intermittently through the film, other strange camera angles were apparent for no reason that made sense when trying to film a conversation between characters in the movie, views up one chaps nose from about knee height when he was in dialogue for example seemed to serve no purpose.
Blade Runner (1982)
Bladerunner at Cambridge arts picturehouse 5/4/2015
There are enough reviews of this film without me bothering to go over the whole thing again, if u enjoy the film then u get it if u don't then its not for you and thats fine. I went to see blade runner in 1982 when it first came out and again 10 years later with the release of the directors cut, on both occasions i came away from the cinema just stunned at the brilliance and beauty of the film,i have of course viewed it many times since on VHS DVD and blue ray, but now 33 years after its first release the B.F.I had given me the chance to see it again on the big screen with a nationwide release of the final cut, 33 years, would it still be able to astound or with all the cgi and advances made would it look just a bit weary?.I didn't want to go to a multiplex to see it i wanted something intimate and atmospheric, luckily i live not far from Cambridge and i booked my ticket for 5 April 8.30 pm at the arts picture house ,it has several cinema rooms each of which house around 200 seats, it was a sell out, some young some middle aged all noisy until the adds and trailers stopped and then the instant the green tree logo appeared with the runrunshaw name ,silence not a sound, the crackle of anticipation was palpable, this is the most attentive and well behaved cinema audience i have ever been in, it was absolutely clear the audience were serious devotees of the film or at least serious about films and paid the showing the respect it deserved, the hades landscape came into view i was hypnotized, after what seemed like 5 minutes we were at the tears in rain scene and the elevator doors slammed shut. The credits rolled and no one moved, about 2 minutes passed before some people did start to leave, half the audience didn't leave until the credits were done and the lights came up, it was great to partake this experience with people who also care about the film, and to find yes it still is every bit as good as the day i first saw it and that it looks BETTER than cgi blockbusters because of the indefinable real quality from something that has actually been built rather than programmed into a computer graphic animation, a great experience, if u have not seen this film on the big screen take this chance to do it, not many films get released 3 times to a national audience this will probably be the last time .
Wolf Hall (2015)
superlative drama at its best
Wolf hall tells a tale that most watchers will already be familiar with, it is after all essentially a historical drama based around the reign of a famous English king, the fact that it never bores or fails to entertain is testament to the brilliance with which the story is told, i would compare this to another brilliant and much lauded bbc drama i Claudius, long held up as the best of British drama, the story is intelligently written and beautifully paced, the acting is perfection throughout, it is filled with political intrigue and family rivalries of the rich and powerful, this is no bawdy sexed up rendition such as the Tudors for example, it is a serious thoughtful study of the events in king Henry 8 court, and the fall out from the demands of a monarch who is at once both charming and erratically dangerous to be associated with,if you want action and fanciful dialog then go elsewhere but for deep meaningful drama with beauty and power look no further, for people who have given this drama low ratings they are of course entitled to, but i am mystified by this and really the average rating should be around 9 for this work of genius.
Under the Skin (2013)
nothing like the book
I watched this film with my partner not knowing anything about it, my girlfriend on the other hand has read the book and was looking forward to a film adaptation as she rates the book highly.Halfway through the film she suggested that the storyline was really too vague, bearing in mind she has read the book this not a compliment, for myself i can only say i was perplexed and frustrated by a disjointed nonsensical narrative that had repetition and extremely slow pacing at its heart. The story such as it is involves scarlet Johansen luring men into her white van taking them to her boarded up house where they strip naked for sex but before anything actually takes place the naked men sink into a pool of black ooze where it would appear they eventually dissolve from the inside out. some of the scenes in the house with the ooze are so dark it is difficult to see what is going on at times, but really it doesn't matter as there is so little going on in this movie anyway. There are many long camera shots of everyday things like people walking down the high street as the scarlet Johansen character observes the society around her from her van. There is a man on a motorbike following her around, later on there are 3 men on motorbikes who appear to be looking for her, there is no explanation for this. There is the feeling that she may not be human or there is something not right about her perception of people although where she is from is never explained, the suspicion she is not human appears to be confirmed by a scene where she tries to have sex with a man but then discovers she appears to have no genitals. The final scene is in a wood where a man attempts to rape her but in doing so tears her skin to reveal a black oozy type humanoid under a skin covering, he is moved by this discovery to set her on fire where upon she burns to ashes. Thats the end, i have made this film sound more interesting than it actually is, i have not mentioned dialog but 80 percent of this film has no dialog, scarlet Johansen speaks maybe 50 words in the entire film, the town or city where she drives her white van is in Scotland, some of the Scottish accents are so strong that they just cant be understood.OK i like complicated thought provoking films, but this isn't one of those. its a very simple story of a strange unworldly creature luring men to her pool of goo to be digested, and thats it, the problem is you only know thats all there is to it until the very last scene , because all the time your thinking something is going to happen that will make sense of this rubbish. If you thought mullholland drive was a great film, if you thought stalker was a great film, then this is probably for you, they both suffer from plots that make no real sense unless you know the plot before you watch the movie, in my opinion a film should be able to support itself and not require a blog or something similar to explain it.
