Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo (2020)
Good idea but has an editing problem
The central plot is good but the movie is waaaayyy too slow. Felt like a 6 hour movie. Alot of scenes and moments stuffed in their just for comedy but doesn't propel the story forward. You get comedy in those moments but all the while your getting restless cuz the movie doesn't movie fast enough with it's plot. Sometimes trivikrams diologue and comedy seem to try too hard at being clever. If the editing of the movie was more crisp and a bit for fast paced, it would have sat better with me.
K.G.F: Chapter 1 (2018)
Overrated due to regional film audience
Kannada audience hail this as the baahubali of kannada cinema. Sadly it is not. Kannada audience are only praising this filmand giving it high ratings out of loyalty while overlooking all the flaws. This is a decent attempt at a big scale kannada film but fails narratively almost consistently. Alot of scenes don't have proper logic and don't make sense. The herione subplot is so tasteless and inconsequential to the plot, as well as the hero characters behaviour around her, it is actually embarrassing and cringe worthy. There are some good scenes in the first half but only a few. Second half also has a few decent scenes. The whole movie has excessive scenes of characters hero worshiping. It almost seems as if the director or writer didn't have enough content to pad the film out. Probably about 30 minutes of the film is just some side characters talking about some myths of a hero on an epic scale and how he will come one day and save people. All of that crap becomes so repetitive and just seems like window dressing for an excessively long film.
About Yash: this is my first film seeing him in a movie. Seems like an okay actor but I don't think he can carry a film on this level. Most of the film is basically set up for hero worship and he just doesn't have a big enough of a screen presence to warrant all of that. A lot of the scenes with him just have him staring blankly mouthing some lines with raging background music without any real emotion coming out. It's actually quite unfortunate to watch the actor emote so little in this day and age considering the times and scale of the project.
There are also way too many characters coming in and out of scenes, too much to keep track of, especially if you're not familiar with the Kannada from industry. It becomes confusing and it doesn't help that in the second half all of the villains look the same. It's a problem to the point where it becomes annoying and confusing and it really becomes serious negative for the film in the second half in terms of engaging with the story on any level.
One real positive I can say is the cinematography. The production team really strived for a big scale but to compare this to baahubali is just a disservice to this film because anyone looking to this film to get their baahubali fix will be disappointed. I had to drive an hour from home and pay $20 for ticket so all I can say in the end as an outsider from the kannada film industry is that this was disappointing but has merits.
Skyfall (2012)
Overall good direction and stunning cinematography save a lousy script...
Its good. It is good. Only because of the direction and cinematography. If u were to focus solely on the events of the film, it falls apart. This is one of those movies that is carried by direction cinematography and acting(besides Naomi Harris, she was severely miscast). Basically one major department is crap and that is the screenplay, and all others are solid. This is a testament to Sam Mendes as a director, because only a truly talented director can make a good movie out of a bad script. Any faults in this movie should be attributed to the writers. The overcompensation for the writing by all other departments is so staggering that this movie has been confused by critics for a cause for debate for the greatest bond movie ever. Whereas in reality, it should be up for debate for the worst script for a bond film. Seriously we r talking about a transformers level script here. Thats why they waited for Sam Mendez to direct the next bond film. Because he elevated a garbage script to million dollar blockbuster status. Hopefully the writers will give Sam Mendez a decent script for the next bond film so he can show his true potential!
