The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021)
The Tragedy of a Movie
Even the brilliant directing, acting and cinematography can't save this very painful movie from itself. I felt like I was stuck inside a medieval insane asylum. If you think you're going to get a dark and twisted story in the realm of Fargo or No Country for Old Men or even Man on Fire, you'll be sadly disappointed. Save your money and wait for the Coen's (or just one Coen's) next try.
Schitt$ Creek (2015)
Possibly the funniest show ever... no Schitt!
I've been a fan of Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara for what? 25 years? But their humor was always a bit too absurd and slow paced, especially in the Christopher Guest movies. This Schitt's Creek vehicle and the absolutely perfect cast around them, most especially Eugene's son Daniel who also writes episodes, takes their humor to a whole new level of hysterical. I've honestly never laughed out loud so often with a half hour show, and it just keeps on coming, episode after episode. The premise is a wee bit absurd, of course, but the situations they set up, the dialogue, the pacing, the complexity, the twists and turns and the absolutely perfect casting suck you deep into their bizarro world and wrings you out. I was missing jokes because I couldn't catch my breath at times. It's even beginning to bring some heartfelt dramatic moments as I begin Season 2. I cannot wait to see it through and I pray that the producers give us a good a long run. Let your guard down in the beginning, get to know the characters and you will not be able to stop watching! I have no idea who thinks of some of their situations, but I suspect that Daniel Levy is a the next comedic genius in the family.
La chambre bleue (2014)
Bleak and pointless
What if there was a crime drama and no one cared who did it? You'd have The Blue Room. I went to see this film because I'm a fan of foreign films. They generally paint very different pictures of people, places and daily life than we get from Hollywood. Even poor foreign films give me glimpses of interesting people and places or a story that makes me think. This film had absolutely none of those qualities. The characters are depressed, bleak and boring. The nudity wasn't the least bit erotic. There is no sense that anyone cares for each other in any meaningful way, not even a father for his daughter or vice versa. The two main characters are having an affair but their spouses don't seem to notice or care who does what all day. I was hoping I'd feel sorry for his wife, but I didn't because she was nearly as boring and lifeless as he was. Even the police detectives seem to be bored with the whole affair. There is one good thing about this movie however: it's short... only about one and a half hours until it is mercifully over.
Calvary (2014)
Why was this movie even made?
Why was this movie even made? I can't believe I spent almost 2 hours of my life with such bleak characters playing out such a dark story. If there was supposed to be some humor in it, I missed it. If there was supposed to be some life lesson, I missed that too. Every character has apparently been affected either directly or indirectly by priestly pedophilia and yet none of them can seem to heal in any way. Then they turn to their present day church and get a deeply wounded priest who may or may not have been directly guilty of such a crime and should have resigned from his position years earlier. It could have possibly worked as a murder mystery (Who killed the dog?), but it failed there too because we never connect with any of the characters enough to even really care whether they live or die. If you want to see a study of the dark and psychologically damaging business of priestly pedophilia, go see the brilliant "Mystic River", but please don't go see this movie. If you do it will only encourage someone to make more of this depressing nonsense. And if you don't see it, believe me... you missed nothing.
