La La Land (2016)

Magical and Enchanting - Modern Day Musical

It's been a long time since I've felt so invested in a movie. I can go through romance films and like them, sure, but this one immerses you and makes you feel.. almost like you are part of it, feeling all the emotions. I really can't pinpoint what it is exactly, but this movie tinkered with my feelings hardcore. There's something magical about this movie. I can also attest to say that I don't usually like musicals, but I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and like all the songs.

Admist the theatrical and creative style that carries this film, this movie is real. What I mean to say is that it resonates even though it may do things that escape the realm of reality. I think that's why I love it so much. You can relate to all the little feelings and actions these characters do.

I think they did a good job of setting the tone for this movie by introducing the characters and what they're passionate about. This makes us understand them, and root for them. It's the driving force for the entire film. We care about this movie because they're so passionate about something, and it shows them pursue it despite the odds. It's truly a beautiful, admirable, and difficult thing to do.

I think at the end of this film you learn some lessons that are open to interpretation, but no matter what it is, you do take away something from it. I've seen it twice in theaters already and plan on buying it when it comes out on DVD!

Arrival (II) (2016)

Phenomenal, well thought out, enjoyable sci-fi film!

What a wonderful film! I enjoyed every second so much. It was creatively put together in such a brilliant way. It's hard to praise this movie without giving small things away, because everything really just is a brilliant surprise. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. This film is also very easy to watch and flows smoothly, making things easy to understand. This is why I think anyone can watch it! This may be the first time I'm giving a 10/10.

I just want to praise the fact that in the beginning of the movie it gives you some clues that you kind of just have to make assumptions about, and in the end it pieces it together in a way that shows you how carefully thought-out everything was... and how some things were there to fool you hahaha. It really is brilliant.

As a casual watcher of sci-fi films, I love films that invite fantasy yet logically provable in some way. I mean without logic, even if fabricated just for the concept for the movie, things wouldn't make sense and it'd seem ridiculous to watch right? This film does a great job with convincing you of how everything works with aliens.

I can't say i'm an expert on sci-films but I know a good one when I see one. This film totally owned their concept of aliens, made it their own, and carried it out masterfully.

I haven't felt this satisfied with a film in a while. I wasn't even the one who picked to watch this movie, I just briefly watched the trailer before going in. Totally surpassed my expectations!

Collateral Beauty (2016)

Don't expect too much and you'll be fine

This movie has such a good and seemingly thought-provoking concept. Initially I definitely expected a lot, thinking the trailer was really good and being that Will Smith is one of my favorite actors. However, I was completely open minded to having the movie play out differently than what I expected.

I think the part I just really didn't like was how the movie was arranged. I'm not sure whether or not it was the way it was directed or the way it was written, but it seemed slow and boring to follow at first. Some scenes or story lines felt underwhelming, shallow, or just unnecessary (making it slow). On top of that, I wish they created more of a story, more background where we feel connected to the characters. As the story unfolds and you learn things, you might sort of feel connected based on where the characters are in their lives. So maybe based on your personal experiences you may feel different than I did, but yeah they didn't really reel me in.

At some point the scenes, dialogue, transitions, or general direction of the movie definitely did feel all over the place and scattered. I wish there would have been more depth, in some cases. The lack thereof may be due to them creating this sort of, light-humored comedic balance. It just felt surface level, as if they were trying to trigger your emotions with surface level things.

Interesting concept, the ending did amaze me, but sadly that was the best part for me.

Ramona and Beezus (2010)

Surprisingly actually really good!

It seemed like a too good to be true of a movie, I thought it wouldn't be as good as advertised. Mainly I wanted to watch it b/c Selena Gomez is in it, but I love it for reasons beyond her! I could also relate to her because she was closer to my age. It surprised me and got to my heart. It is definitely a feel good family type of movie. I really like the dynamic between Ramona and Beezus, and how we see them bond and their relationship develop & improve. If I see it on TV once in a while, I'm glad to watch it again. It also keeps pretty lightweight most of the time while dealing with struggles and problems. I recommend this!

Neighbors (I) (2014)

It was just a stupidly, funny movie.

It's like they were trying to see how inappropriate they could make this movie to make people laugh. The plot is REALLY simple. The movie is more relying on the "funny lines" and "funny scenes." I guess if you really like some of the actors or think they're funny or cute or whatever, you'll be interested.

I don't really know what to say. It was a good time..? At some parts it really made me laugh and was just laughing at how stupid it is. While I was watching it, I knew that basically Dave Franco and Zac Efron were the reason I actually bought the ticket.

After it ended, it left me feeling nothing. There is no satisfaction that comes with it. Hey if you're watching with your friends and just hanging out and laughing, it'll be really fun! But don't look for anything more in this movie. It's a good time. But just judging as a film, it's weak.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

I didn't know what to expect. It was worth watching!

I didn't know what to expect from this movie, and I've seen a few "time-loop" kind of movies so it wasn't that shocking of a thing. This movie wasn't extraordinarily different than those other ones, but I really liked it. I have nothing bad to say about it.

At first, things were moving kind of slow, I was a bit confused, and it seemed kind of plain. But along the course of events, characters show more depth and the movie gets more interesting, which is what to be expected in a movie!

While I was watching it I wasn't really judging the production of the film, but rather just watching, paying attention, and enjoying it. However, looking back at it, I do think it was nicely executed! The story was nicely told. I did find myself full of suspense at some points and invested in the characters. The actors did great jobs!

For the storyline, I kind of expected that kind of storyline. As events unraveled, I just predicted some things. For me, it wasn't completely like "woah so unexpected" but it wasn't boring or generic. They also pulled out some things that made me go "WAIT WHAT." So I'd say it was pretty enticing.

This movie left me satisfied and happy with everything. It's not one of those movies that I super duper love and keep it close to my heart or anything, but I did really like it and have nothing bad to say about it!

Divergent (2014)

AMAZING! Completely sucked in. (& I read the books)

WATCHED IT IN THEATERS TWICE! I really couldn't get over it. Was not disappointed. 2 hours and a half, really went by fast and wish it lasted longer.

When I first heard about this movie was when I saw a trailer last year, and this world just seemed so interesting and it completely captivated me. This hadn't happened to me in such a long time from a trailer, and I have good instincts of knowing a good movie (at least I'll know if I'll like it.) I really couldn't wait so I read the books.

Eh, in all honesty, I kinda do wish I hadn't read the books before I saw the movie OR at least had read it a long time ago and forgot every detail. Because every detail of the book was still fresh in my mind and I had imagined it a certain way without even noticing. I really couldn't help compare each scene to the book. It's okay though, the second time I didn't do that I just appreciated it as a movie

On that note, I think Theo James captured and portrayed Four P E R F E C T L Y. He did it in a way that I didn't imagine, so yes it was a little different, but he embodied the essence of Four's character, with every manner and mannerism. Shailene Woodley played Tris really well also! She was different from what I imagined, but at the same time, the same.

The actors are good, the production is good, the soundtrack is okay to me, but it wasn't bad or anything.

I REALLY LOVE THIS MOVIE. Before I read the books I thought the romance would take away from the identity of the female character, like it would just become a romance film, but nope! They make each other stronger, and I kinda am in love with Four. It has a good an interesting plot & storyline, good action scenes, and funny moments. I think it's a really different and unique movie. I really would not compare the story to Hunger Games. I liked Hunger Games, read it too, but I think this is better.

My friends who hadn't read the book really loved it too (though they would've been slightly confused if I hadn't explained stuff, but I think they would've been okay), and some of my guy friends like it too. I know this doesn't represent everyone of the male gender, but hey I thought it's knowing a guy can like it too and they thought Four was cool.

I want the next movie to come out now!!! And I want this on DVD <3

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013)

Nice to watch, action-packed, a little confusing

To be clear, I haven't read the books. The story seemed like it had potential, but I didn't like the style of the writing, so I decided to watch the movie. Based on the reviews, it seemed like those who read it didn't like how the movie portrayed the book.

So, I thought, that's great for me!

I don't really understand much about this world, but I kinda just went along with it. Left me feeling pretty confused mainly at the end (I was kinda lost on who some of the characters were too). I really liked the action-packed moments! The story is very good too. I know there's going to be a next movie, but at the end I was left feeling like "what?"

About Time (I) (2013)

Such a great film!

I didn't really know what to expect besides just a romance comedy, and I thought the time travel thing might make the film too cheesy or fake. But nope! I think it's a pretty insightful film, and very funny. It's very well done. It feels different than other movies out there, especially other "romantic comedies." Also, I like how the main guy has such good charisma, and Rachel McAdams is great as always. I think it's a movie that leaves you feeling very happy, and feeling happy for the characters.

The main thing I took away from this movie is that you should try to live each day trying to appreciate the small good things, even when stress or ordeals may upset you. Yes this sounds very generic, but it really does put perspective on how you should look at life. If you look at each day joyfully and appreciating the small moments, you'll have better days!
