I seen it compared to western Sopranos, and that is way to generous in my opinion.
As I am currently binge watching both shows, I wanted to comment on this. Disclaimer; I'm finishing 5th season of Sopranos, and I had to stop Yellowstone at the beginning of season 3, it became childish.
One of the biggest differences is characters, neither the actors or their roles have the caliber for this comparison.
Yellowstone suffers from grose over-acting, and I don't mean just Beth. In a way it is fitting of some cheaper soap series, where this would bland right in. However I had the impression Costner was aiming higher at the beginning. And ussually those soaps have the clear good guy-bad guy distinction, which this series doesn't. This is where it mildly resembles Sopranos, boath have more anti-heros. This is if you don't count the fairy talle characters like Kelsey Chow. She looks and acts like Disney did the casting for Pocahontas, not to mention she has nothing to do with natives, something I didn't expect from Costner.
Hardly believable plot is something again that plagues Sopranos too, but is less noticable, and doesn't sting as bad. And more importantly, as the seasons go on, Sopranos keeps this linear, but Yellowstone plot just spins out of control.
