Donnie Darko (2001)
The Best Indie Film Of The New Millennium
What "Pulp Fiction" did for the 90's Donnie Darko does for todays modern cinema. All over the internet, i've heard that the director Richard Kelly is the new Quentin Tarantino. I don't agree with this since their styles are so different and too the kind of movies they make. Their only similarities are that both have written scripts for Tony Scott. But in some ways, their films are similar. Like in Pulp, Donnie Darko has a few pop culture references, outside the box violence, and very well thought out dialog. but thats when the comparisions stop. DD is a mix of sci-fi, teenage drama, physcological thriller, and black humor. the acting is top notch featuring a mix of young talent(Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Jolene Purdy), Veterans(Mary McDonnell, James Duval, Arthur Taxier) and Hollywood favorites(Drew Barrymore, Patrick Swayze) all delivering great roles. I would Recommend this for anybody who want to find an indies masterpiece(which is really hard to do) or who just wanna see a great movie that the average moviegoer wouldn't think of watching.
Interscope Presents 'The Next Episode' (2003)
The Best Hip Hop Battle Show Ever!!!!!!
In the post-8 Mile world of hip hop, it was natural for someone to run with the trend. But Showtime took it to the next level with this show. Besides giving those who never gave a care about battling before 8 mile a rare look into the world of the most respected emcee, the battle emcee, it also gave a take no prisoner look into the contestants' personal life. From the deeply emotional stories of Qwest Mccody(Detroit) and Ness Lee(Atlanta) to the complete ignorance of Tone(Atlanta) or the overconfidence of Spitfiya(LA), Diabolical(NY), Or Young Blake(Philly), you just wanted to see who won. And to add the significance of this sport of the quick witted and clever, Celebrities such as Eminem, 50 Cent, Method Man and others basically give you a do-it-yourself kit to making it as a rapper into today's mainstream game. I only wish that Showtime Would have continued this series for a few more seasons. If you missed it, too bad you missed the best and most realistic look into the new millennium hip hop culture.
Biggie and Tupac (2002)
The Greatest Music Documentary Ever
I'm a big Notorious B.I.G. fan and believer of Tupac's N.I.G.G.A.Z. philosophy so when i seen the video tape at Wal-mart, i knew i had to own it. When I brought it home, i was hoping to find a link between their deaths and the police cover-up i've been hearing about in LA (mind you i live in north Carolina). What I got was a brutally honest, horrifying, well thought out documentary. The main argument about Nick Broomfield from Kurt And Courtney was his seemingly one sided mission to make you believe HIS truth. He does it here but instead of just interviews from people with a vendetta (and trust me, there are plenty here) with the culprits Broomfield say are responsible for their deaths, we also get interviews from BIG's Mother, Tupac's step-brother(who i seen as a opportunistic jackass), Former bodyguards for both Pac and Big, and the most important of all, Death Row CEO Suge Knight. The Most entertaining is of course Knight, not because of what he says happen( he refused to comment on either deaths, sorry ) but because of the remarks he makes of Snoop Dogg(wonder what he has to do with anything? watch). And if that doesn't do it for you, Volletta Wallace(BIG's mother)'s interview will make you cry(the last one i mean).
Street Fighter (1994)
Not As Bad As Everybody Says, But Still Horrible
Well the script and cast was weak, but the action was pretty decent and Van Dam as Cor. Guile a perfect fit for the role, i mean who were you expecting, Robert DeNiro? Even the rest of the cast were F-Level actors who only got casted because of the resemblance of the video game characters, which were good only for that. Lets take this film for what it is, a chance for Hollywood to capitalize on the fighter video game craze of the mid-nineties. It's no Mortal Kombat but i'd rather watch this film again than Resident Evil any day (don't ask why). Besides, The Soundtrack was Way better than the film. Any Hip Hop fan should check it out. the soundtrack i mean.
