Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
And so it begins
I don't know why people have rated this film so low. Ok, I was confused at the beginning and it did seem a bit of a stretch to bring back the baddies from the first film in the way they have, but as soon as I accepted that aspect, it was brilliant from then onwards. Who doesn't want to see alien whales and Maoris battle evil humans who are killing for money?! Plus the graphics - breathtaking! Had me on the edge of my seat for most of the film and of course it has set us up for the next film, which must be the epic battle to make sure humans never come back. Who will we meet next - will we get to see sky and cave environments too? Time will tell. Anyone who criticises it representing a nature documentary clearly has missed the point - it is supposed to.
The Last of Us (2023)
He should use his shiv
Only watched two episodes so far but wow! They have managed to reproduce every scene in the game. The feel, the scenery, the sounds. It certainly progresses faster than I did in the game, the girl is a bit more annoying in the series, and he could do with practicing some silent takedowns but I don't think I've ever seen such an accurate adaptation before.
It brings the fungi to life, more explicitly than in the game and I understand the connection between the Mycorrhizal network and the newly created 'zombies' which I didn't really notice in the game (probably because I was too focussed on not getting killed!). A different take on a zombie apocalypse if you aren't familiar with the story.
If you've played the game - watch it. If you haven't played the game - watch it.
Emergency (2022)
Thought provoking
This film really confuses your brain. A few students doing stupid things with the aim of getting drunk at a key event - funny right? - yet those stupid things are a result of being so scared to do the right thing in case racist attitudes of the emergency services lead to the students being blamed, or worse, shot. After a series of unfortunate incidents, including a horrifying police chase, the geek is left with PTSD after saving someone's life. A distressing comedy.
Eating Our Way to Extinction (2021)
Oversimplified
There is never a single solution to a complex problem and the bigger picture is far more complicated than shown during this documentary. These documentaries frequently concentrate too much on surface issues rather than looking at root causes of the issues we face today. Our economy, economic norms of growth and over consumption and over population are the root causes, yet these aren't really addressed.
It also oversimplifies the switch to a vegan diet as many switching still rely on processed food. Many meat substitutes have high quantities of fat and salt - what impact will that have on health and well-being? How about other ingredients such as palm oil? We also have intensively farmed fruit and vegetables, as well as rising numbers of GM crops, linked to biodiversity loss due to increasing use fertilisers and pesticides - yes, some of this is also associated with the meat industry but what are we going to do about our current vegetable and fruit growing practices alongside decreasing meat consumption? What impact is the alternative milk industry having e.g. Almond growing in California? It all needs to be thought through properly. Plus, a minor point, deforestation is also more complicated. For example, in Scotland there are numerous factors over thousands of years including climate induced deforestation, agriculture clearance, deliberate destruction to reduce resources of competing communities, housing, the industrial revolution and war.
It's an opportunity lost, as it could have delved deeper, given there are already numerous documentaries saying exactly the same things this one does.
On My Block (2018)
So sad it had to end.
Absolutely love this. Yes, there's some bad acting, but who cares. It covers everything you would want from a tv programme - intrigue, suspense, comedy, drama - every single character is unique in their own special way - a bunch of misfits trying to get through this mad world together. A new Goonies (they reference the film a few times) but with more adult content. Wish we could see them go to college.
Absentia (2017)
Could not stop watching
Ok, the acting is pretty bad in some scenes but the story line is completely engaging to the point I couldn't stop watching. Lots of twist and turns all connecting to the same central character. Interesting backdrops to the action, fast moving, different plot to the average show. The 9/10 is a score based entirely on the directing and plot. I often struggle concentrating on TV series these days, and very rarely do I become gripped on a series, but couldn't stop watching this. Thanks.
