White Famous (2017)
Entourage, in a Californication setting, with Jay Pharaoh.
In a PC world, the title needs a name change. That's where 80% of the negative reviews are stemming from... off of ONE episode. Wow. Smh. So after seeing the second episode, this show is basically a combination of Californication and Entourage, told from the perspective of a Black comedian.. Geez, give the show a chance. Several "Entourage" archetypes are in this series, so if you are going to critique "stereotypical Hollywood characters," critique the repetitiveness, not the characters. And if you don't think "those types" exist, feel free to browse (a) Variety, (b) TMZ, or (c) purchase a plane ticket to Hollywood.
Note: As I watch each episode, my rating will adjust based off of story COLLECTIVELY.
Ghost in the Shell (2017)
Typecasting & Whitewashing is an issue.. but I still enjoyed it.
Double edged sword- something that has or can have both favorable and unfavorable consequences.
The problem with studio system logic is that is sacrifices originality for marketability.. That, my friend, is a double edged sword.
What happens when you take the Actress from Lucy, Avengers and Her, then place said name actress in an already established series? Character residue. Simply put, as a fan of the Manga, the previous Ghost in the Shell movies, and SAC, I can't get this "Lucy" taste out of my brain. In terms of Art Direction, it's Great. In terms of referencing source material, they did a good job. But at the end of the day, casting was DEFINITELY AN ISSUE (& not from a whitewashing standpoint). In the movie Gravity, George Clooney was very distracting for me. Why? Because even as an Astronaut, he was basically "Danny Ocean in Space." ScarJo did a fantastic job, but TYPECASTING is my issue. As a fan of this Series, I am now stuck with this amalgamation of ScarJo characters in my favorite anime. Thanks. Thanks a lot. *insert straight face emoji*
Good film for fans of the series, but custom made for fans of ScarJo.
Irony: A film about stripping self identity, while the actual film strips self identity. Filmception.
Grades:
Art Direction 10/10 (but I'm partial to futuristic dystopia stuff)
Reference material 8/10 (Using exact scenes, loved it)
Casting 7/10 (Not bad, just redundant)
Overall 7.5/10 (See in IMAX)
Get Out (2017)
Get Out (Quick Review)
Excellent "slow cook" Horror movie!!! The pacing is well timed, and the reveals happen naturally. The plot is deeper than race, but you have to watch the movie to understand why. Decent sound design (tea cup) and I love the 50+ mm CUs (when they happen, it's for a reason). Good comedic timing to release tension.. Seriously, it's an awesome Horror movie.
Her (2013)
I love the movie, very original, BUT...
Her ..a Jimmie Julion review Sergio Leone style.. (January 19, 2014)
The Good: Visually stunning; a cinematographer's dream. Well written and directed. Awesome Character Depth. Great music. Made me think.
The Bad: Should be titled "How to experience real emotions, artificially.." If this doesn't sum up a 'Hollywood' mindset, I don't know what does.. The best part in the movie is what his ex says in the restaurant. That part sums up how I feel about the story. If you really analyze the protagonist, the character arc of 'Her', the computer, is completely justified.
The Ugly: No doubt that this should win several Oscars, the sheer effort in style, music, producing, and writing is definitely clear, but I could also say the same thing about a Hype William's music video. This movie feels like a stylish commercial.. It's visually stunning and interesting, but no meat.. I know I am biased towards Scorsese. When I see a Scorsese movie, I can feel Scorsese's life experiences being infused in the movie. When I see this movie, I visualize a Starbucks store, Hipsters, struggling artist, woe is me... I guess it depends on the type of person you are.. Awesome story about self absorption, but I prefer tangible feelings, like redemption (which happens to be part of the foundation of Scorsese storytelling btw).. Furthermore, when we walk down Sunset Blvd and see people talking to themselves, don't we think those people are crazy..? The same should apply to watching this movie. I get the movie. I truly do, but watching a guy parade up and down the street in love with a computer is just as fake as a fuel efficient dirt bag who wants to help the environment, but totally disregards people in the crosswalk as he speeds by in his Prius. That is why I give it the 'real emotion, artificially' Hollywood connotation... Is it Slum Dog Millionaire? Nope. 12 Years a Slave? Not even close.. In the end, "She", the computer, is simply a psychologist, showing a guy his character flaws. Once again, I ask you to focus on restaurant scene with ex.. All in all, brilliant performance by Joaquin Phoenix, excellent filmmaking by Spike Jonze and props to the cast and crew. I feel like this IS a movie I will talk about in 4 years.. When it comes time to see who wins best Director though, let's look at how influential Scorsese's style has been.. Hell, if you really want to be picky, American Hustle is truly a 'knockoff' Scorsese movie.
I appreciate the use of technology to show how detached and polarized humans are becoming. In my opinion, this is not best movie of 2013, but definitely deserves all the credit it's getting..
Best original story? Hell yeah!. Best lead actor? Maybe. (Not nominated though). Best music? Sure. (Although not original, I still enjoy the music in The Great Gatsby..it was the best soundtrack of 2013 and "young and beautiful" easily sh*ts on all the songs in 'Her' collectively)..
Just my opinions. Sorry for any typos. Texting your thoughts on a small phone is challenging. I don't think it should be Best Picture, but if it is, I'm not hating. Good movie.
