this why i watch independent film

Review for Falling Angels

The definition of acting, the way I've learned it is creating the illusion of reality. Now a substitute for that in the dictionary might be see; Falling Angels. I know that I'm not alone and not doing so bad, when I see other people trying to figure out life. The three girls in this story are pretty much left to figure everything out for themselves. Their role models are an absent alcoholic mother and a twisted alcoholic army dad, who every time he sees them, they stick their hands out, for a cleanliness inspection. This is why I watch independent film. This is why I joined Film Movement and thank you, director Scott Smith. A slice of life; getting into the personal drama of other peoples lives. These people react to situations as real people do, without saying, "I'll be back!" and then killing every one in the building with a machine gun.

Morlang (2001)

art to die for
7 March 2005
This film is set on the high end of the European art world. It's a story of an artist's obsession for his wife and jealousy of a rising young artist. These two forces are what motivate Morlang to do everything he does in this film. I also question the motives of the young rising artist. This film just confirms that even though man is the most intelligent animal on the planet, he's still an animal. I can't say much more without giving it away. The cinematography was perfect; great angles, telling the story without words. I'm glad Film Movement brought this movie to the U.S.. It would've been a shame if this film went by unnoticed.

I'd like to hire Maiquel to kill my 5th grade teacher...
22 February 2005
...and my x-girlfriend and that guy that bumped into me on the train.

he was a cool, young, good looking dangerous guy and climbing to the top of a Brazilian ghetto. it was amazing how all the people swarmed around him, wanting to be with him, wanting to be friends, partners and lovers with the killer. it seemed like he was doing a service to the community at first, killing all these bad people. but quickly turned into a gun for hire. the only sign that he had feelings was displayed upon his pet pig and look what happened to him. if a guy like this enters your life...things will go really good for you for a time, but you'll be guaranteeing yourself a premature death too. and god bless the beautiful woman of Brazil. i still can't figure out who is prettier, Claudia abreu or Natalia lage. this is the first film i got through Film Movement. it's so cool to get these indies delivered to my house. i liked this movie a lot. i got to see a part of Brazil i will never know in real life.

OT: Our Town (2002)
Our Town: 2005

the smallest haven of hope... ...in a self destructing world. the delicate and impressionable lives of teenagers are being molded into who they are going to be. a door has opened for them, giving them another choice, other than being swallowed up by the ghetto. a hand full of students and two teachers have made a choice and learned there is a better way of life. it's a real life film, documenting the lives of kids in a compton highschool trying to put on the play "our town" by thornton wilder. they learn how to work hard for what they want, that life is a struggle!!! and as the teacher in the film said, the only reason for putting on the play was that it was coming from love. Film Movement knows how to pich their movies. those kids made this world a better place.

skeletons of a small town
17 February 2005
Every one strays from the path of being a descent human being. we all have our own way of coping with life. where ever a person can hide, not to take responsibility for their lives. or compensate through being a workaholic, promiscuous, chasing money, or finding a mate to validate ourselves when we feel lonely etc...etc. people can complicate a glass of water. and so are the characters in this story. each one is their own worst enemy (arent we all) in this slice of wilby history. it's decision making time in wilby wonderful. am i going to continue avoiding the accountability of my life or am i going to change?

this film just reminds me of why i love independent, dialogue driven film. the beauty of the town isn't not to be confused with the kind of people that live there. each character was brought out into full dimension. and i was able to feel all their pain. the fact that i hated sandra oh, just means she's a great actress. if i were her husband in this film, things wouldve turned out different. my recognition for outstanding actress in this film goes to ellen page. i recommend this film to any one who is a member of the human race. i also have to thank Film Movement for delivery of this film to my home. we don't get any indies out here. if not for them, i've missed it.

soldiers fighting the enemy and themselves
15 February 2005
the insanity of distinguishing a murder from war killing! is there a difference? is the nature of the crime different? isn't fear behind it all? bringing it's ugly cousins, prejudice, hate, pride and ignorance. All these forces working to break or compromise the good side of all of us. that's what the characters of this story are up against. The only redemption and hope in the story rests in the life of the young hostage. The three reckless soldiers, (street thugs with permission to carry automatic weapons) are left without any leadership and their best thinking leads to murder. they are as senseless as war it self. the story is set in a homeland war of Croatia. the difference in their army from conventional armies is that their squad consists of father and sons, brothers, friends and neighbors. i was relucxtant to view, but got it delivered through Film Movement as their pick of the month. i liked this film and it opened the door for me to be more willing to screen a lot more foreign films. they have any element that American films do not. cant quite put my finger on it yet.
