Scrooge (1970)
Timeless classic..
We have just watched this on Channel 5HD and although we all know the story this was made nearly 50 years ago and is a brilliant adaption. It has really put us in the Xmas spirit
Naked Lunch (1991)
Pretentiousness personified.
I write this review ever so slightly late as I watched this movie at the cinema on it's initial release.
Myself and my wife were the only remaining watchers about 70% of the way through.
It's basically an incomprehensible mess of a tale from an incomprehensible book.
Anyone that tells you otherwise is a pretentious psuedo intellect.
Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
Highly recommended.
I didn't have high expectations about this movie even though it was directed by Danny Boyle. I saw a screening at my local cinema, and to be honest most screenings I have seen there have been a waste of time. I watched the trailer before going but was still not sure what to expect. Well, I can report that this movie was everything you want from a film and more. The storyline was different from any other movie I have seen and it was cleverly pieced together in flashbacks that are all relevant to the main theme. All the characters were believable and likable(especially the two main characters) or dislike-able as they were meant to be and the ending was neither twisty nor a foregone conclusion. It also showed India as it really is(I have been there) which for some I think will be shocking. In fact everybody in the cinema stayed until the credits had finished and unusually people were not speaking when they left? I would describe it as a Guy Ritchie-Bollywood movie! All in all this movie was a roller-coaster ride of emotions and I defy anybody not to be moved, or not enjoy it.
London (2005)
Barely worth it.
I read the reviews here prior to seeing this film and maybe it was built up a little too much for me. Maybe I am missing the point but it had very little plot, and mainly involves people talking about their problems or airing their opinions. Jason Statham proves he is a not a one trip pony and Chris Evans puts in a decent enough performance, although not enough to rescue an otherwise dull movie. With a film like this you expect maybe a few fireworks toward the end or some kind of twist or revelation but sadly there were neither. I wouldn't recommend this movie to a paying customer but it is worth a watch on a miserable Sunday afternoon if your cable has gone down. A redeeming quality was the soundtrack just a shame that there were only three tracks during the whole movie.
Invasion (2005)
Superb
I have read on a few forums that this series hasn't been very well received in the states, which I find amazing. The pace of this series is perfect, it gently sucks you in and once you are in, there is no turning back. Watching an episode at a time simply isn't enough. At times I felt I knew what was coming next but it has sufficient developments in the storyline to keep you hanging in there. There are a wealth of characters all of which I found myself liking (to a degree) which is unusual. Admitidley the plot has a few holes but for an hours escapism each week it hits the spot. Sheriff Underlay is certainly an enigma but I reckon he might come good in the end.
Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush (1968)
Excellent sixties coming of age movie.
Although it was made when I was 2 years old, I thought this film was superb. I remember stumbling home to my parents house after the Pub and seeing it. Maybe I enjoyed this more than I should of because it was filmed on location in my hometown. You can see that life was much simpler in the sixties than it is now, even the geography is less cluttered and more clean looking. Reminded me a lot of the Billy Liar series. This is a definite must see 60's coming of age movie.
I think I need a copy of this classic sixties movie, anyone know where I can acquire one please get in touch. *UPDATE* Managed to get a copy of this superb movie here: http://www.thevideobeat.com/
