Emoh Ruo (1985)
Excellent 'Little Aussie Battler' Movie
This brings back memories of Sydney back in the '80s when I was growing up! Very well done, packed with laughs and lots of visual gags and spoofs of people from the home loan, building and banking industry. Anybody who has been through the experience of saving up to buy a new home for the family on limited finances should be able to relate to the movie.
A great cast of people bringing to life some very likable characters help bring you into the story. Many of the actors went on to become famous and well accomplished in the years to follow. It's funny seeing them so young in this movie!
Gunmen (1993)
One of the best 'bloke' movies ever made!
This has it all - guns, comedy, a stupid plot, senseless violence, explosions, drug dealers, Denis Leary, cleavage, and none of that stupid emotional baggage most films seem to adopt at some point - what more could a guy want? Definitely a great movie to watch when having a few drinks with some mates. My friends all constantly come back to watching this movie after a night out, it just has everything. Great B-grade performances from some top name actors like Denis Leary, Patrick Stewart, Christopher Lambert and Mario Van Peebles. It's the sort of thing you could almost imagine yourself getting caught up in on a baaaaad holiday to South America.
I don't recommend any girls watch it, though I know a few who would find it amusing. To the people who say it is super-violent, try watching the nightly 6 o'clock news. Far worse stuff happens every day in real life.
The Incredible Torture Show (1976)
Great for shock value! But don't hire it to watch on a date.
This is one of the only movies I have trouble sitting through. Blood and guts are fine with me, but this movie is just plain disturbing! After taking it to a party to watch only two people out of about thirty could actually stomach it. Most of them felt sick only half way through. It certainly didn't make people laugh like most other horror/comedy movies. I wouldn't describe it as a comedy, but of course the sort of people who would hire it in the first place (like me!) are likely to find it highly amusing. The sick twisted midget just makes me laugh! Watch this movie alone, because people will think you're a freak if you enjoy it plus they'll hate you for making them sit through it! But it hits the mark where so many other horror movies fail - it truly scares and disturbs people.
Rectuma (2003)
Not even worth a 'B Grade' rating
Terrible acting, terrible plot, terrible dialogue, terrible soundtrack, terrible dubbing, and a terrible waste of time. It wasn't offensive, just completely and utterly boring. I'm a BIG fan of lots of low budget or B grade movies, but usually they have a great plot or a good idea behind them. I watched this with a friend who loves B grade horror movies and he actually fell asleep through it. This is something maybe a 5 year old kid would find amusing, but you'd have to find one of those kids who giggles every time somebody says the word 'butt'. He wouldn't be laughing at the movie, just the word 'butt'. To give you an idea of how juvenile this movie is, they use the word 'poop' a lot but never say the S word (that would be rude wouldn't it?) however they occasionally use the F word. It felt like a Disney movie, designed not to offend anybody. It doesn't fit into the 'Comedy' genre and doesn't fit into the 'horror' genre either. The most amusing thing about the movie is the name. I can only assume the movie is so far rating at 7.3/10 after 30 votes is because every single member of the cast voted 10 for it. PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS!! I implore you! Stop giving people who make these movies your DVD renting money! Then maybe they will stop making movies like this. I've seen movies in the IMDb Bottom 100 that were far more entertaining than this.
Qi mou miao ji: Wu fu xing (1983)
Fantastic HK movie! Surprised it isn't more popular.
I first saw this movie years ago on TV when I was pretty young and the entire family was in stitches from laughing so hard. It's full of pointless almost slapstick humour, but all done in such an entertaining way that it fits in beautifully with the plot. It has one of the best highway pile-up scenes I've ever seen in a movie, not completely overdone like most movies these days but done in a believable and funny way. Highly recommend this movie to just about anybody. I found the DVD at a rental store years later and took it to a friends's place for a party and everybody loved it. I'm watching it as I write this review, and my stomach is hurting from laughing so hard.
