Reacher (2022)
Could be much better.
This serie comes out after the couple of Tom Cruise's films, that has been criticized due to the lack of physical presence of the actor. Now we really got the physic but the screenplay has some serious problems. I never read any of the books but I can't believe that in the books there were so many fights in which Reacher comes out without a single sign. In one of the last episodes he is hit by an iron bar several times. I can understand that adrenaline makes you go on for some time, but the day after you will not be able to have a walk for sure. It could be enough to make some fights a little more credible, some talk less predictable and it would be a good way to spend some time. I gave it 7 because some episodes, in the middle of the series, are really fine. Probably the fault is that each episode is made by different people, each one has its own director, who make the story as he wants. The last two (the final fight is terrible with the fire done by a cheap cgi) are the worst of all the serie.
Outlander (2008)
The 13th warrior plus Predator
Quite... terrible. If you have seen "the 13th warrior" probably you will like this. It adds more sci-fi as a plus, but it lacks in cgi (quite terrible) and in the costumes or scenography that are clearly done in the 20th century (see the John Hurt's costume in some scenes, the perfectly round well). I had some hopes finding the 6.2 on IMDB, but according to me it's not more than 5. There isn't the story from Crichton and the direction by McTiernan.
Senza nessuna pietà (2014)
Really great.
Mimmo is the adopted son of the crime family led by Santili, the patriarch. Mimmo and his cousin Manuel, legitimate son of the boss, act in a ruthless and arrogant way for the whole city, now terrified by their power. Despite everything, however, Mimmo, even if faithful to his family, would like to get out and live a quiet and peaceful life. He receives the task of bringing an escort, Tania, to his cousin's house in view of a party but falls in love with her and here his world start to collapse.
I don't understand the vote on IMDB for this film. Favino is great as always, but also Gioé, Adriano Giannini (son of famous actor Giancarlo Giannini) and Scarano do their job pretty well. Ninetto Davoli is a great stepfather. But the best part is the story. No Italian cliché, no standard love story or happy ending. There is violence and blood, but that's how a noir film is. This film is gripping until the end.
Notturno bus (2007)
Initially good, it loose quickly the grip.
The initial part is quite interesting. The pursuit for the chip is gripping, the actors are some of the best in the Italian film industry and here they work well. The usual problem in Italian films is that there must be always the love story that redeem the bad guy and make him (or her) try to change his (or her) life. No real plot twist, no surprises. Love wins all. If you want to see a noir film really different in Italian film production, check "Senza nessuna pietà" with Pierfrancesco Favino. It will give you a different prospective on Italian films and will wipe away that sense of "already seen".
Just Cause (1995)
Could be much better
Quite good until the car chase just before the end. No way a kidnapped person drive a car at full speed avoiding other car and then takes the road against the flow of traffic. A scared person has no such cold blood. From that point the film collapse until a predictable end.
10 giorni con Babbo Natale (2020)
Usual italian stereotype.
The usual itian stereotype. A family with some internal troubles go for an holiday all together in order to share good times. During the holiday something magical will happen that will solve troubles and will make the italian family always win. Fabio De Luigi has good moments, while the wife sometimes seems bipolar as pass from laughing to anger in a while. Abatantuomo is very far from the "Mediterraneo" moments.
Kvinden i buret (2013)
Plot hole
A woman is kept in a sealed chamber for years. That's the biggest plot hole in the film. It's not possible she is able to live with just food. There are other needs, like washing, clean dresses, absorbent. And probably a medic from time to time. No, the story starts in an unbelievable way and it mess up all the film.
How I Live Now (2013)
A teen drama
I was unable to understand which kind of movie was, so I watched it. Initially seems a terror then a sci-fi film. At the end it was a teen drama during a modern war world. Not the kind of film I like, but after all well done compared to, for example, the Twilight saga. If you are not found of these film, the only other reason to watch the movie is the beauty of the English countryside.
Storie sospese (2015)
What the......
The story starts well. Thomas work as a climber when his colleague fall and dies. The work is stopped and Thomas is forced to accept another job from an old friend. The situation seems immediately unclear, where the company continues to work even if the local people report fractures in the houses. When things become more clear and the situation requires to decide if continue to work for an unethical company or support the local people, Thomas takes his decision and... the film ends. No side effect, no real conclusion, no consequences, just a plain straight end. Absolutely weird...
La pelle dell'orso (2016)
Quite good until an end with no plot twist.
The story is about a journey of a father, with an unclear past and that barely talk with his son, and the son that try to have a place in the father life and in the town. They have to search and kill a bear that, from time to time, comes down from the mountains to kill some cow. The father has bet a whole year of work on that. The film is good, Paolini has a theatre background and it's a solid actor as a silent and angry father. All the others actors are quite good and the film goes well until the end, where no real plot twist is left to the viewer. Just to let you know, if you have seen Jaws, the film is quite similar. The father is Quint, the son is Hopper.
Jojakdoen dosi (2017)
Terrible
It's like a mix of a Bruce Willis film with some nerd part and martial arts too, but with the tipical chinese/japanese way of acting. I was able to see half of it. Then I thought that if I want to see an American-like action movie videogame like, I go for the original one and not this clone.
Lo spietato (2019)
Created for the Italian viewers
It's the story of a young guy that came to the North from the South of Italy and, in the center of the Italian business (Milan), take its place between the local Mafia. The film is based on the story of a real guy (Saverio Morabito). For the Italian market, especially for the Milan's people, this is a well-known situation as in the 80's the Italian businessmen were terrorized by the chance to be kidnapped. This was the start of the mafia raising in the North of Italy, that used money to rule the drug business and become more and more powerful. Today, after 40 years, in the North of Italy it's difficult to catch the difference between a real businessman and a businessman that has done money thanks to the Mafia.
Root Cause (2019)
If you want a real story...
... search of Volkerding from Linux Slackware. I read his story in 2004. He had some illness due to some mouth bacteria. The story is very different from the ones reported as examples in the film. There is never a direct correlation between teeth and internal organs. If you have mouth problems, this will affect all your health and will not give you only backpain or cancer or other issues. This film seem a Dr House screenplay. All the guys has a big problem and once you remove the teeth they feel fine in a couple of hours. Just Sci-fi.
Human Flow (2017)
If you are European....
If you are European like me, this film will open your eyes on the migration events that you read on the news everyday. Europe has missed to create a right way to approach these migrations and now is panicking. I don't see a bright future for it. Great film, that gives you a large overview that many other films are unable to give.
