The Return (2003)

Review of Film
26 January 2005
I rented the film based on the boxed review of the film. Whoever wrote the marketing of the DVD was entirely wrong. What the DVD box wants to tell you is that some boys finally meet their dad and he ends up wanting to kill them. That's Not This Movie!!!

What I will say about this film is that is a remarkably well casted movie with very talented actors and it is one of the best foreign films I have ever seen. It is a Russian film made by first time filmmakers and I only know this by seeing the documentary included in the DVD. I would highly recommend anyone to see this film. The basic plot is that two brothers who are very close despite their age difference and friends suddenly are confronted by a father they had never known. Their mother wants them to go on a fishing trip with their father who suddenly appears after 12 years of being gone. It's hard to equate this man to who gave them life and it's a hard adjustment for both of the boys. Not every question is answered, and it makes the movie more intense.

The only American movie of recent I can equate it to is "Mean Creek" that just came out this year and "River's Edge" from 1986.

A combination of freshman filmmakers and talented actors combine to make this a great film. I highly recommend it.
