Keedaa Cola (2023)
Tharun Bhaskar's style of movies.
Director Tharun Bhasker's greatest accomplishment is his never-ending drive to advance Telugu cinema from a technical standpoint.
It all started with Pelli Choopulu, and continued strongly with ENE. And now in Keeda Kola.
The color grading, cinematography, editing feel so familiar and instantly relatable. It's something only a few directors can pull off.
I have nothing much to say about the story or the screenplay itself. It's not memorable, just entertaining.
You can have a good time. But it's definitely not something that stands out, as it is with his previous two feature films.
Tharun has set a benchmark for indie, buddy comedy movies and he continues to surprise everyone with his casting decisions.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Cinema is its most visceral form
It's rare to experience a movie like Oppenheimer in the contemporary Hollywood. This is Nolan at his best, using his experience in ways you'd never imagine.
You are immediately hypnotised by the chilling soundtrack of Ludwig. The visuals and the brilliant dialogue are breathtaking.
With a relentless pace that makes three hours go by inconspicuously. I somehow didn't realise how the last 30 mins of the movie passed by, and yet I felt like it could've used a few extra minutes.
Condensing a book like American Prometheus into a 3 hour movie is a great feat.
If this is Nolan's attempt at going for an Oscar, I wouldn't necessarily argue it. But I would add that this movie doesn't look like an Oscar bait. It's still got Nolan's touch.
The Last of Us: Look for the Light (2023)
For fans of the game, the finale feels rushed.
I can't speak for the TV show fans who haven't played the game, but I felt this episode and the finale was rushed and they didn't allow enough time for the characters to develop more.
It feels kinda odd that they kept lengthy episodes in the first half of the season, especially for Bill's episode, which doesn't contribute to the main story in anyway.
And as they approached the finale, I felt like they had their hands tied by limited budget and as if they had used up all the screen time.
Other than that, this is still a wonderful episode and easily one of the best in season 1.
I hope the creators take this feedback and make season 2's episodes lengthier.
I can't wait to see Abby.
The Last of Us (2023)
After 7 brilliant episodes, I'm convinced Bella Ramsey is perfect as Ellie.
I'm really in awe of the matured performances of both Bella and Pedro.
With every episode, they've been getting better and better as Ellie and Joel and setting up brilliantly for season 2.
Each episode has been improved in ways the game just couldn't do it. Only TV/Movies can do things that games miss out on and I'm glad they preserved the look and feel of the environment from the game.
I don't think there has ever been a better video game to TV adaptation (is there?)
Pedro too has so far nailed his performance as Joel.
While the other supporting characters are great, they are short lived and don't last
I can't wait to watch the final two episodes.
The Good Doctor (2017)
Missed opportunity with patients in the hospital
This show could've been even better if the patients who visit the hospital became recurring characters who re-appeared in later seasons.
This format was used extensively in "The Good Wife" and it was very successful.
I feel this show could've used the same format where they made the characters of the patients a bit more interesting, rather than ending their storyline within a single episode. This creates a weak story and no one has enough time to care for them.
Tenet (2020)
Nolan deliberately makes parts of his movie hard to understand on 1st viewing.
Tenet is a great movie if you watch it multiple times, with subtitles.
But in this Covid time, it is highly impossible to go to the movies even once.
The casting in this movie is spot-on. Every member of the cast did a brilliant job. Ken Branagh dominates the scenes whenever he's present on-screen.
This movie will be enjoyable on Blu Ray, with subtitles on.
The Witcher: Before a Fall (2019)
The episode that brings everything together.
This episode of The Witcher is greatness personified. The answer to all the lingering questions lies in this.
The opening 20 minutes gave me goosebumps.
Such is the power of the great storytelling.
All the prices fall into place.
Well directed.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
A mockery of Star Wars universe. Even worse than Last Jedi
The sequel trilogy got to a point where the filmmakers are now making a mockery out of the entire universe.
This movie moves so fast right from the get go, doesn't have a story.
The characters acquire certain powers that are impossible in the Star Wars universe fans know.
The fan service felt like it was overdone and unnecessary after they gave us two movies full of it.
The conclusion has no emotional catharsis, except the fact that they used the nostalgic tune of the force.
This is a movie that is hard to recommend to, even for Star Wars fans.
The Irishman (2019)
Mr. Scorsese is the master, the reference point in film making.
You know it right from the beginning that you're watching a unique film with a unique style and familiar characters and yet it feels so different.
Only Martin Scorsese can make you feel like this.
The Irishman is a masterpiece from Scorsese yet again. He crafted each and every character with care. Not a minute was wasted in this 3.5 hrs long movie.
The background score deserves a special mention. The Irishman theme is memorable and epic.
Scorsese has given us movies like Silence, Wolf of Wall Street, Hugo, Shutter Island and now The Irishaman in just the last 10 years.
To achieve this at this stage of his life and career is truly remarkable
