Young Rock (2021)
One of the best political commentary series
I'm writing this review after I've watched the season 2 finale.
The conceit of this series is Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's fictional US Presidential Run in 2038 to become the 49th US President. The series is told as a series of flashbacks from various points in Johnson's life.
The conceit of the series is that there has been success of some former WWE Superstars breaking into politics and it would be possible for Johnson to make a similar ascension. I'm not the first to say that there are indeed some strong correlations to the Opera that is wrestling and US politics.
Like Veep, Young Rock presents its protagonist as a politician but does not really dwell on topics that many would consider mainstream US politics. Instead it focuses on the politics of family and business.
The show not only gives you a biography of Johnson, but also provides a historical retrospective on what the wrestling industry was like throughout the different eras. It also paints some picture of what many of the larger than life personalities were like outside the ring.
The theme of the series so far is that it's not just about having the skills and doing the work, it's also about having the political connections. It's now pivoting to the anti-thesis on how it's not just about having the political connections, it's also about putting in the work and developing the skills.
I'd recommend the series to anyone who has interest in wrestling, family, or politics.
Man of Steel (2013)
One can dream...
A re-imagining of the Superman story for the modern era. Here Kal-El is an unaccompanied alien sent to America as a political and climate refugee, and is adopted as Clark Kent. Although initially laying low for decades, he is eventually drawn into the open by a powerful gang leader, who was a rival to his birth father. The conflict escalates until Metropolis becomes a war zone. With the violence of his old home following Clark to his new one, how will Clark stop the gang from taking over?
Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet: Peter (2021)
The sequel does match the original
I suspect this two episode arc was planned to manage reduced cast and crew availability during the pandemic shooting. This marks the first in-person appearance of CW, and features a smaller cast not including the main offices of Mythic Quest. No doubt this was done to limit the travel for the older cast member. It also directly follows the story of last week's flashback episode "Backstory" and brings some closure to the arc of CW and his rival Peter. It's always great to spend some extra time with supporting characters in an ensemble, and this one delivers.
WandaVision: We Interrupt This Program (2021)
Each episode gets better
The best part of this episode is how it shifts the perspective and takes a character who was formerly an antagonist, Jimmy Woo, and makes them a protagonist by aligning them with other protagonists, Darcy Lewis and Monica Rambeau. It really adds an additional layer to the fact that Wanda, formerly an antagonist turned protagonist has turned heel again. This is an interesting story with no "bad guys".
