The Grudge (2019)
The Grudge Goes to Hollywood as a comedy?
I mean, c'mon. I'm looking deep into a tub of black ooze, might something just maybe pop up and grab me? I'm hiding in the closet, might something grab me from behind?
After an hour, I was laughing out loud and soon left early, wishing I'd spent that hour doing something more enjoyable... like yanking off my toenails.
Greatest Events of WWII in Colour (2019)
A whole new and far more accurate take on history!
So... everything I learned in school was, once again, wrong! This is revelatory, similar time The People's History of The United States. By combining the viewpoints of scholars worldwide and reconciling them down to actual fact, a completely different picture emerges. New names become prominent while old heroes, and villains, recede to lesser import. And, one of the most important questions of the 20th and 21st centuries... "Why did the German people support Hitler?"... is brought into such clear focus that the answer seems quite simple. As so much has been said to compare certain modern politicians to Hitler and their regime to Fascism, the actual facts here draw a series of events, a mindset and national psycholog that much more ckerly elucidate where this is most concerning today.... and where it isn't. So worth seeing!
Midway (2019)
The critics got it wrong
The critic consensus is quite gloomy, painting the film as poorly executed and at times, slow. What it really is, is an almost lovingly accurate retelling of the entire story... including the motivations and actions leading up to Pearl Harbor, the lives and stories of some of the incredible heroes, and even some aspects of political climate on the Japanese side (which I can personally testify are quite correct). The critics seem to be dismayed that the special effects don't take center stage and that the explosions and action are not more fast-paced, but this is a movie about history and real people, not the latest installment in that horrid Transformers franchise. Those interested in feeling the tension and motivations of the actual people and even their families and getting a true picture of some of the incredible heroism, skill, and luck that made Midway the turning point in the Pacific War, instead of the prelude to the invasion of our West Coast, should really enjoy this.
Daybreak (2019)
Sophomoric Buehler Ripoff
Imagine the execs at Netflix thinking "Hey, let's mash up Ferris Buehler with Mad Max!" "Oh cool, we won't even need expensive talent or writing, just lots of addressing the camera and jokes at the expense of all the groups we don't like, from jocks and cheerleaders to LGBT folk." I dislike it for how slow, tired, poorly executed and just insultingly childish it is. I hate it for the pit shots at the expense of those who don't deserve it (and those who do). Just go watch Beavis & Butthead and be done with it.
Ready or Not (2019)
Wait... what? This is a reused plot?
As it progressed, my sense of deja by turned into an ability to know what was coming next and, finally, the dawning surprise that... I've seen this before. Oh... I see... it's a remake of another film, and not even an old one. Blech!
The Kitchen (2019)
Not like the trailer... for better, for worse
What this movie did reasonably well was to take our expectations of a light-hearted and cool romp with a group of gangster ladies and turn them on their head with jarring bits of violence and revenge. Where this movie fails badly is in its attempt to depict a feminism-forward picture of abused women empowering themselves. It's next to impossible to see these women in a positive light, considering the violence and evil they commit so blithely with no apparent second thought. I'm the end, speeches about the constant fear women in large cities in the 70's and now experience/d come off not as inspirational, but more preachy and false. This is further confounded by a central theme of women building family and community... through selling protection and loan sharking. It's an acceptable popcorn diversion, but little more.
Blinded by the Light (2019)
Not the light-hearted romp I expected, but...
Sure, it has a few very fun moments, even one that reminded me very much of Bollywood, but it is really an embodiment of the underlying message in Springsteen's music... the despair and hope, the family and desire to escape of the working class ... everywhere and anywhere.
I actually don't pay too much attention to lyrics, in general. I guess I should. I gained a much better understanding of Springsteen's music and message thanks to this movie and will never quite see it the same way again.
The Art of Self-Defense (2019)
Sadistically Funny
A precisely humorous, well acted and horrifying take on toxic masculinity. Without spoilers, I will say that I was very happy at the end, but in a kind of "evil giggle" sort of way.
Booksmart (2019)
Best coming of age!
Laughed, I laughed, I laughed, I cried, I laughed again... and then... I felt this wonderful sense of validation, both for the lead characters and yes, myself. I felt wonderful leaving the theatre. Highly recommended for nerds, geeks, outsiders, the unpopular kids and of course, women everywhere who just want a great laugh and a warm feeling!
