Sex Education (2019)
Loved this show but...
A well made production. Quality likeable cast, good writing, acting and direction but some really odd anachronisms. Firstly, lets talk about the school which is styled on an american high school from the eighties. From the school crest to the team penants. But odder than that which less people have picked up is that, although set in the present day (and not the eighties) all the cars driven by main characters or seen in a main shot are from the 70s or 80s. Why? Austin Maestro (Eric's dad) and an ancient merc estate for Otis's mother. The guy from the academy, an ancient Nissan I think and the head teacher drove a Rover 820. In one shot an Austin Allegro was central. Was this some kind of in joke ?
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008)
Utterly dismal
It was like watching my ten your old son play star wars battlefront on his ps2 for 90 minutes. Even he was disappointed and he is a complete and utter die-hard star wars fan. To be fair to George Lucas, he IS showing his green credentials by recycling old stories and adding a tenuous subplot. Ignoring the complete lack of decent plot, there was a sassy new sidekick for Anakin, completely out of character for the way a paduan is supposed to behave. The animation was cheap and disposable compared to Pixar and Dreamworks. It really was like a cheap cable TV product that was released by mistake. Only go and see it if you are utterly desperate for entertainment or feel the need to help George L's bank balance.
The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse (2005)
A welcome departure
Unlike a lot of reviewers, I'm not a die-hard L of G fan who attended a special screening but a regular cinema goer who appreciates their 'brand'. Some of the criticism that has been levelled against the film is that it isn't a 90 minute version of the TV programme but a departure into new territory. That for me made it all the more enjoyable. I wouldn't say it was the best film I've ever seen but it was funny more often than not, cleverly written with some interesting departures including a 17 century subplot with some unexpected nods to Ray Harryhausen!! If you like your humour dark and at times Pythonesque then this is the film for you.
