Coat Room (2014)
A Little Bit Of All Of Us Hiding in The "Coat Room"
Beautiful and sensitively written, a true slice of life drawn from the author's own life story (which would make a fascinating movie unto itself!). Jennifer Nangle does a very impressive job as a young woman caught in a family she feels truly does not understand or loves her. Haven't we all felt this tug of war at some point in our lives, male or female, early in our lives or as a sudden burst of knowledge later in life? The author has made Nangle's character easily relatable, and the story flows easily and in a realistic manner. This is one of those movies that stings for a moment as we recognize ourselves in the main character and the pain that she/we feel as we navigate the labyrinth of familial relationships, whether we wish to pursue them or not...kudos to Katie White and an amazing cast and crew!
Ghosts of Mississippi (1996)
A Movie Very Much Worth Watching Now in 2020
I literally stumbled upon this movie which I consider an enormous gift. Well-written, beautifully acted in accordance with the actual personality traits of the characters' themselves, and focused on American history's perhaps most-forgotten racist extreme injustice, it is all the more pertinent for our times today. Skim over the previous reviews; some nitpick at minor issues which seem to be of great import to them personally. But you can't deny that the assassination of Medgar Evers - shot in the BACK in the presence of his wife and 3 children at his own home by overtly racist Byron de la Beckwith - is once more a story for our times. This murder took place in 1963. How far has racial justice come today under the tRump presidency? How many steps backwards have we taken over the years? This is a movie that will make you think without hitting you over the head with the "good guys versus bad guys". As a country, we are losing our collective ability to think for ourselves, and this masterpiece by Rob Reiner forces you to do so.
