Baby Driver (2017)
Lazily written
This movie had potential but the opportunity for a decent story was passed up at every turn in favor of music and fast cars hitting other cars. Where's Baby's character development? His parents died. That's enough, now watch some fast cars. How did Baby and Doc develop a relationship? I don't know, cars go crash. What happened where Deborah is ready to take off and start over with a stranger? Who cares, did you hear that soundtrack?
No onto the characters. Baby and Deborah were boring with no chemistry. Jamie fox's talent was wasted here. Flea was unnecessary and distracting. And Jon hamm was difficult to believe as a bad guy, never mind the undying horror movie villain he became it the end.
And do you like shortcuts and lazy coincidences? Every car can be stolen GTA style by just getting in and starting it. Every major plot point happens to lead to Bo's diner ( the cop bathroom scene was cringey). Baby steals a car and who does he hit? Buddy of course. What a coincidence.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Very disappointing.
The attempt to have the two story lines intersect at the climax of the movie fell flat. Primarily because as it was told, there was no Tate story line. She was just living in LA with her friends. We know how it ended in real life, but in this revision, nothing happens, then something almost happens but doesn't. her Character has no motivation in this movie.
And the big scene with Pitt visiting Spahn ranch was irrelevant. You could edit out the entire scene and the only change that would need to be made was the fact that Pitt recognized Tex. That's it. And why on earth would he cast Lena Dunham. She is disgusting, annoying, and out of place in the movie.
A Quiet Place (2018)
What is it's weakness?
From early on in this movie, we see a board full of notes and newspaper clippings detailing the situation. There's a group of aliens who hunt based on sound. What we don't know is what's their weakness. Are we going to to learn anything about the challenges of fighting these things? Nope. What does their weakness turn out to be? As it turned out, they are vulnerable to a point blank shotgun blast to the face. Who'd of thought?
But you don't want to make any noise though, because that will attract them all, right? Well, if it's a shotgun, yes. If it's fireworks, no, not so much.
Other than that, the aliens are out of central casting, the story was rushed and there were several plot holes. Not worth the hype.
Stand by Me (1986)
Timeless and brilliant.
So much has been said already, but this is a movie that not only stands the test of time, but grows with you as you age. I was the same age as the characters when this came out and I thought it was a cool story about running away with your friends.
As an adult I realized it wasn't just about the death of a child named ray Brower, it was about the death of childhood and innocence. Just like the train, you can dodge it and try to escape it for a while, but eventually, time and age will hit you like a train and knock you out of your keds.
As an adult with kids, I now watch it and it hurts thinking about my own middle schoolers growing up. But the thing I never thought much about was Gordie's parents. They mourn Denny so much that they fail to recognize the great kid they still have.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
Frances was good , every other aspect was overrated.
I cannot understand how a movie with numerous plot holes and a non ending could be so acclaimed. From the beginning we learn Mildred is determined to find justice and won't let the police rest until they do their job. The chief explains that there is absolutely zero evidence to follow up on, no witnesses, no forensics, nothing. So we should expect Mildred to say, "well if you won't follow up, I will" and take on the case herself, right. Because she's so distraught and determined. Nope. She just keeps poking him with a stick saying "solved it yet chief?"
And why exactly does the guy come in the store, harass Mildred, and almost confess? He had nothing to do with it and isn't even from there. We learn nothing about the character to explain that.
And of course the case isn't solved. You can assault high schoolers, throw people out a window and punch witnesses in the face, attack a dentist, burn down the police station and nobody gets arrested. How could they solved a cold case?
And oh yeah, they actually did have forensics the whole time. That's how they cleared the random guy who had nothing to do with it but repeatedly bragged about doing it.
