Barbie (2023)
Not what I was expecting...
I adored Ryan Gosling as Ken, and Margot Robbie was perfect as Barbie. (Parents, this is not a movie for little kids.) The beginning was hopeful and I loved the cast and the amazing set of Barbie Land. Barbie's playhouse was amazing! But as it went on, it became way too political and preachy and went downhill. If I did this movie, I would have made it a love story between Ken and Barbie and had them get married, making use of all the cool Barbie toys and her friends. But of course that would have been strangely politically incorrect, even though that's what most people still do these days. So it was a way cool set, amazing cast, but way too political for my taste.
The Yearling (1946)
If they only made films like this today...
So many life lessons are touched on in this movie. Life, death, hate, human survival, brotherly love, etc. The values that are woven into this film seem to be mostly missing or forgotten today, and there aren't a lot of ways to learn them in the material world we live in now. Beautifully filmed with a perfect cast, this heartwarming human story is an unforgettable coming of age tale. If it's true that life imitates art, then when you look at this film compared to the many spiritually and morally empty movies of today, you can see why we live in the messed up society we have now. They truly don't make them like they used to. I read the book before I saw the movie, and they are both superb.
Under the Banner of Heaven (2022)
Inaccurate, a bad comedy.
No, no, no. Inaccuracies throughout, the dialogue was particularly weird and unrealistic. We forced ourselves to sit through it to make sure we weren't over-exaggerating. We were laughing and rolling our eyes at almost every scene. It was just wrong in so many ways. These were people who became obsessed with revenge and violence. It really wasn't about the religion, it was just convenient for them to blame it on that. In fact, they weren't even LDS. They had been excommunicated.
Around the World in 80 Days (2021)
I appreciate that it was family oriented
I certainly appreciate that it was family oriented. That is always a plus in my book! It's hard to find things these days that aren't riddled with foul language and rampant sex. I was somewhat disappointed though, as it became too much of a sermon on social justice. Sometimes we just want to be entertained. I love David Tennant, but I don't think this was his best role.
Hattie (2011)
Awkward...
There was something very awkward about this movie. First of all, Hattie's husband was treated horribly, and what about the kids? What were their feelings about this unhealthy living arrangement. Apparently Hattie and her driver John, had no morals whatsoever. The sex scenes were uncomfortable and I forwarded through every single one of them. It would be the same if you watched a fat older man with a younger attractive woman. Not that it doesn't happen or that it's necessarily wrong, and I know we shouldn't base everything on physical beauty, but it just wasn't very watchable or aesthetic. If this is truly how the lives of these individuals were, I'm sad for all of them.
Aiden Turner is really handsome, and I only watched it because of him, but I forwarded through a lot of it. After watching it, I watched Poldark again to wash the bad taste of his character in this movie out of my mouth. I'm sorry, I just couldn't find any redeeming qualities in this movie, except see the mess it made of everyone's lives, and learn from it.
Bloodline (2015)
Great binge watch!
This was an awesome series. I binged-watched it for 5 days. Kyle Chandler and Norbert Leo Butz were my favorite characters - absolutely outstanding acting by both. The character development was well done and the scenery was beautiful as well. The plot had lots of twists and turns and kept me guessing. I enjoyed seeing the story unfold. The only thing I didn't like was that the "F" word was so frequent it was annoying, so I got VidAngel so I could filter that word out. After that it was easy to watch. I definitely recommend this series using VidAngel.
The Kindness of Strangers (2019)
Sometimes
Why it only rated a 6, I will never know except maybe people only expect to see fast-paced, intense action movies filled with expletives. For those who long for something a little more introspective, I think this movie is perfect. I appreciated the slow pace, the music, and the setting. It gave me a look into homelessness I had never thought of too much before, that of a person who didn't choose it, but faced abuse and violence as the alternative. I loved the characters, and thought the acting was very good. It was slow, but not in a bad way. In a way that actually made you think and not want to miss a scene of anything that was said. It even had some humor here and there, despite the heavy subject. Some of the scenes were heartbreaking and raw, but probably pretty realistic. I would recommend this movie, and suggest one be ready for thought provoking drama and introspection. It was somewhat heavy, but ended on a note of happiness and resolution.
