Two-Lane Blacktop (1971)
James Taylor vehicle
Nothing to see here, move along. Terrible direction. Luke warm acting from Taylor. Not worth the time. I'd pass in the fast lane on this one.
Thriller: Pigeons from Hell (1961)
Masterpiece of horror
Thriller was an hour long TV series from the early sixties hosted by Boris Karloff. Most episodes dealt with crime and mystery, but a few stood out as very scary. One that stood out was "Pigeons From Hell", a gothic tale if there ever was one. Two friends traveling through the south have their car break down in a swampy area. They spend the night in an old abandoned mansion using sleeping bags . Some time through the night, one is awakened by strange sounds that puts him into a trance. He walks upstairs as if sleepwalking. His friend hears him scream, and rushes up the stairs to find him with his skull split open approaching him with a hatchet. He runs in absolute terror. The pace is excellent and well worth a watch for true horror fans. I highly recommend this episode.
The Sand Pebbles (1966)
Must see movie
One of the remarkable things about this film is Richard Crenna's troubled and conflicted captain of the warship The Sand Pebbles. A talented performance. I remember his comic acting on The Real McCoys as Luke McCoy, a sitcom from the late '50's . This protrayal only garnered a Golden Laurel. It deserved much more in my mind. Also Steve McQeen's only Oscar nominated performance. Good cast, but a warning. There is a brutal torture scene that may affect the squeamish. Not rated for 1966, but would garner an R rating for violent content by todays' standards.
Wolf (1994)
Great Spin on a classic idea
Mike Nichols delivers on this iconic film. If you like movies dealing in lycanthropy,
this film is a must. More intelligent than most horror movies, it delivers with great performances by Jack Nicholson and Michelle Pfeiffer.
