Detroit (2017)
Gut - Wrenching
Kathryn Bigelow has another HIT!!! This movie is outstanding and the acting is SUPERB. Bring your thickest skin...in other words, be in a decent frame of mind when you see it; it is tough to watch.
Detroit is about one horrifying night in 1967. The events are based on true facts and compelling. There is a heart-wrenching scene in the film that will tear your emotions apart. The scenes are so well played that you will feel the dire distress of the characters...the danger and difficulty...and your own anger in being helpless.
The movie captures the time period...50 years ago and even brings in a piece of music history from that night that plays on today.
Don't miss it.
Weiner (2016)
Defining Acts
It's so easy to judge Anthony Weiner from reading text on social media, in the newspaper, and / or the news shows on TV. "Weiner" is a great documentary film and as others have written, riveting. I was fixated the entire 90 minutes; all the time asking myself, "Why would he let them document this?", all the while cringing for his wife, Huma Abedin.
Where is the line drawn between loyalty and abuse? Although Huma is very clear on where she will and won't participate in the documentary, you wonder where and when does her loyalty to her husband become nothing more than emotional abuse? There are two types of obscene behavior, the indecent kind that brought Anthony Weiner down, and the disgusting kind that has little disregard for the rights of others. The documentary exposes the latter in a defining rarity: With only 4 - 5 % of the vote and dead last, the media chases Weiner all around like dogs in heat trying to squeeze every last tidbit out of the story.
Who are we to judge? When we become persistent observers of misery or scandal...fascinated with the distressing sordid scandalous events of others, are we engaging in voyeurism? If you see the movie, please let me hear back from you.
American Crime (2015)
Emotional
From the beginning I was taken in by all the different story lines and interactions of the characters. They all have various degrees of baggage withing their lives. The writers were masters at putting this all together.
Story lines are real and extremely intense. The acting is superb!!! Every single character delivers. The bond of loyalty between Carter and Aubrey is unbelievably real. You won't recognize Felicity Huffman as Barb Hanlon; one of the most memorable acting parts ever and I expect her to get an Emmy for her role. The same goes for Tim Hutton who plays her ex-husband, Russ Skokie.
One of the best dramas on TV.
The Newsroom (2012)
"Check The Facts" - Brilliant Writing Aaron Sorkin
Watching this series makes me wish I had seen The West Wing.
53 Minutes into the season finale with the following read on the bottom of the screen: "A Republican in Name Only", referring to the anchor himself as he verbally spewed a list of the current climate's "vituperative" (Mr. Romney's word) atmosphere - ending with a powerful reference to the "Tea Party" as the "American Taliban". Powerful stuff.
Jane Fonda and Sam Waterston were fun to watch as conservatives from a business "point-of-view"...knowing how strong their beliefs were in the '60s - both were very active politically.
I can't wait for Season 2 next June.
Standing Ovation Mr Sorkin...and Thank you HBO.
