Hunter Prey (2010)
A Very Pleasant Surprise!
This movie accomplishes a lot with very little. Although at first it looks like another low budget cheesefest, it soon proves itself to be a worthy and appealing science fiction story.
Quite a lot of movies nowadays are all style and no substance. The Star Wars prequels have proved that while this approach may be profitable, it isn't something people will really love or respect. You don't need fancy special effects or complicated plots to make a film work. All that you need is likable characters and a simple problem for them to overcome. Hunter Prey is great for this very reason.
The acting, writing and directing make it a fun ride the whole way through. I'm very interested to see what this director could do with a proper budget.
The Butterfly Effect (2004)
Want to waste 2 hours? Try the Butterfly Effect!
I watched this movie with my now ex-girlfriend. She isn't a native English speaker, so I think she couldn't tell how horrible the acting was... which is the only possible explanation for her liking this movie.
The acting is laughable, the story is preposterous, and the directing is like that of a mediocre TV movie. I don't mind Ashton Kutcher in a comedic role but God - in a dramatic role he is truly terrible.
I cannot conceive of how this thing is so well-loved by IMDb users... the way I could ever claim to have enjoyed this movie is as a very unintentional comedy.
Seriously, save yourself some time and skip this thing... at the very least, don't pay anything to see it.
The Abominable... (2006)
Words cannot describe the stunning lack of skill involved in making this film
Do you want a movie with a large group of unappealing actors? Constant extreme close-ups of these actors to cover up the fact that the sets are terrible? Special effects that wouldn't fool a small child? If so, then this is the movie for you. Follow our completely uncharismatic cast of one-dimensional characters from one set to virtually the same set as they embark on a painfully boring and nonsensical journey to... do... something, for some reason. It's not terribly clear at any point, but it has something to do with a man in a white gorilla suit whose height varies from eight feet tall to about forty stories over the course of the film.
Truly, Abominable is a film surpassed only by... well, virtually every other film ever made. And, I've seen "Butterfly Effect."
Alone in the Dark (2005)
This movie will give you leprosy
I can't say enough bad things about this movie. Arbitrary, nonsensical, incoherent doesn't even begin to describe it. It's like Uwe wanted his movie to be so cool that he filled it brim-to-brim with ill-implemented action scenes that serve no purpose but to make the entire thing look cheesy and retarded. It's as if a ten year-old boy was the driving force behind the production.
This movie is not at all subtle, intelligent, original, or captivating. It's not even that entertaining, like you can expect from a lot of bad movies. By the end, you're rooting for the monsters and hoping they make the deaths of those they kill slow... but not too slow, that would just extend the movie.
To paraphrase Dave Chapelle, I wish I had four hands... so I could give it four thumbs down.
The Bushido Blade (1981)
Somewhat of a let-down
I read the premise on the back of the case and thought Bushido Blade would be a great movie. Granted, I knew movies about Japan made in years past could be somewhat contrived, but the description made it sound like a good adventure story in an interesting setting.
Unfortunately, this turned out to be less than that. While always entertaining, everything was a little gratuitous, a little forced, a little affected. The only particularly likable characters were Mifune's, Mako's and Chiba's, and the whole thing sort of just deflated as it went along.
Furthermore, I found myself laughing out loud at the particularly violent moments. Half of it was just at how intense they were, but a lot (if not most) of it was how unintentionally funny they were.
This leaves a lot to be desired. It's not bad by any means, but it has none of the magic that Mifune's other movies do.
