The Bourne Legacy (2012)
I enjoyed it
Wasn't sure what to expect from this one at all? Didn't initially see the need for another Bourne film after the trilogy with Matt Damon but I read that there was a fourth book and my curiosity was piqued. I wasn't at all familiar with Jeremy Renner at this time so it seemed like a clean slate to me. I've subsequently seen Renner in both Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol and The Avengers and loved both movies and his performance in them.
Even arriving at the cinema and sitting down to watch this I had literally no idea what to expect. I was, I am relieved to say, pleasantly surprised.
Renner's Aaron Cross is a fine new character and the plot is good, there are a few clever moments. There isn't as much action as there is in Ultimatum , the action quota is higher than Supremacy and Identity and the action scenes are, as to be expected, excellent.
Never been a huge fan of Rachel Weisz but she was good in this. The irony that she is married to Daniel Craig is quite amusing.
In short I enjoyed this and hope for a fifth film in the series.
Bad Day (2008)
an honest review
I can't believe all the good reviews for this film. Most of them are by people who joined the IMDb, gave this film a glowing review within 24 hours and then never contributed to the site or message boards again. What a coincidence!
Anyway I had the choice of giving this a glowing review or an honest review. I chose to give an honest review to counter all the fake positive ones.
I didn't like this movie at all. I didn't feel it was worth the cost of buying it.
To deal with the positives first. Claire Goose is excellent in the lead role. There is one good fight scene between Claire Goose and Donna Air.
That is the end of the positives I'm afraid.
The negatives are everything else. Donna Air isn't as bad as her detractors suggest but she doesn't hold her own against Goose. The other performances are all weak. The script doesn't make sense. The low budget is all too apparent, Bad Day looks like a you tube video.
Tied in Blood (2011)
i enjoyed it
This is a clever, well made little movie. I cannot understand the negative comments by other reviewers. The criticisms of the acting and story are, for the most part, completely unwarranted in my opinion.
I was impressed by the fact that this is a character driven story, dealing with real people who have recognisable human personalities and lifestyles. It certainly made a refreshing change from zombies, vampires and cheapskate "found footage" atrocities.
Tied In Blood has a supernatural element of course, which is nicely set up and introduced in a gradual way. This is essential in keeping the story plausible.
Most of the cast are very good. Paul McEwan and Laura Donohue in particularly give standout performances. The only weak link in the cast is Alan Brent who looks as though he is reading his lines off a card. Fortunately he only makes one small appearance and something about him perfectly suggests the kind of sleazebag who would do or say anything to separate honest people from their money. This attitude makes his casting as McEwan's boss quite understandable.
The film is an entertaining story with a twist that I didn't see coming. I really enjoyed it and found it a welcome change from other b-movies.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
very poor..don't bother with the sequels
I didn't have any advance warning about this film's subject or story. Rented the DVD from the local store after seeing Daniel Craig on the cover. There seems to have been a deliberate attempt to mislead Bond f ans into watching this. The title sounds like a Bond movie (its very different to the original book title)and the title sequence is like something out of a Bond movie. Actually the title sequence for this is far better than those of the last few Bond movies.
Unfortunately after the titles it deteriorates quite rapidly. The early parts of the film are tedious and seem to take forever. The character played by Daniel Craig looks terrible. He is too old to wear trendy "fashion victim" type clothes. he looks far better in tailored clothing like the suits in Casino Royale or the beginning of Dream House.
Its difficult to comment on the story. Its basically a murder mystery that I didn't care if it was solved. The running time is too long and the film should have ended before it did. There are moments of great unpleasantness but very little positive to counteract them.
I don't have any interest in a sequel and I think Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara have far better things to do than make more of this trash.
