A voyage of blood and drama
3 September 2023
I think that most people who went into this film was expecting a beat for beat of the same script that was written by Bram Stockers but if that were so we would of had a film that lasted 45 mins since it was a short chapter in the novel.

This on the other hand is a more drawn out depiction of fear and distrust amongst the crew and why back in the day every man on board a ship was full of superstition. I had myself laughing at certain parts when people had to remind others that woman aboard a vessel was a bad omen or when someone is mistakenly taken for a sick individual, they would suggest draining them of blood to be cured.

Of course all nonsense, but this is how the world worked back in the day. I felt as every character had an important role to play on the ship except maybe 2 characters but otherwise solid performances all around including Hawkins, Cunningham and the boy who's name is Woody Norman. (great actor for a kid) David Dasmaltchian is a superb actor and can turn from a brave sailor to a sobbing and very frighten man.

Now I loved the Dracula look and as he kept feeding his body would morph into a strong more vicious Bat like demon, my only gripe was not actually having an actor playing Dracula in his wing bat form but a majority of the time he is flying around and sucking, slashing and even ripping bodies to shreds. I get its easier to make a CGI character than to put someone under the chair and have them go through 4-6 hours of make up but for Draculas first phase it would of helped a lot more to build that creepy and eerie look that CGI cannot convey.

I also enjoy the cinematography to the point that I was finding myself gazing upon the back drop and wondering how much was CGI and what was green screen it was very beautiful but yet unsettling under terrential downpours and darkened skies with moonlit nights.

To all those individuals that are mocking those who havent read the novel or watched Coppola's film, have a hard time determining from what is a full length movie based on a novel and what is an exploited chapter of a book and drawn out to bring depth with sorrow and despair in what a voyage of 2 weeks would feel like aboard a ship with a beast that feeds on the living. 8/10

If you love gothic horror and films that are tight and very little areas to explore such as Alien or The Thing, you will enjoy this fresh take on a classic tale.

Such a promising show
3 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I can't believe I never heard of this show and now I know why. It was already cancelled and it had me interested even though it blatantly takes ideas from other movies and shows. I. E stranger things, ferris bueller, the breakfast club.

I was heavily invested because the lead character starts off as a needy bitch. But as you start to see her development, you can't help to feel for her because she has obviously hit a pivitol moment in her life, where things are new and strange for her (having powers and what not) but she is trying to find herself in this chapter of her life with friends, family and lovers. I don't want to give too much away but it was a series that I hoped would continue and low and behold it has been cancelled, when this was far more entertaining than 3/4 of all the garbage they put on Netflix.

Could there have been a bit more of an explanation or sped things up, of course. But that would mean you received too much information and that leaves you fulfilled too quickly without having to ponder or have some theories of our lead character. I can't believe that I hadn't heard of this show until now and I will not be getting an ending. This show could of easily been 3 season and I would of been satisfied. As I know realize that some shows need to end when they are ahead and not prolong a story just because they have viewers. Everything's needs a begining, middle and an end.

7.5/10.

Dune (2021)

One of the most beautiful shot films of 2021
9 June 2022
DUNE part 1 is a film that ends on such a high note that it almost makes it worse knowing we have to wait over 2 more years to get a sequel.

When I first heard about this film, I was super excited knowing it was Dennis Villeneuve directing. He has put out solid movies in the last decade that all have achieved miraculous and exciting cinema experiences. Every scene and every character is a piece of a larger puzzle as you slowly progress in the film and embark on a journey with our hero Paul, the Savior of house Atreides.

It's very much a slow burn, but a slow burn that is needed to give explanation as to why Paul is the saviour for the people of Arrakis, why he is different from any other human being and what makes him a great leader amongst the fremen.

As I just finished watching my 2nd viewing I felt the film was just as jaw dropping and beautiful as my first viewing in theatres and I can't wait to see what is in store for the future. My only hopes is that Dennis Villeneuve makes it into 3 parts as the books are extensively long and there is so much lore and story to unfold in the world of DUNE.

A complete waste after the half way point.
19 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Now I'm usually not too critical on films but this had so many good elements that in the end it felt like I just watched an episode of mind hunter. Aliens that help solve murders, wtf is this garbage. I'm sorry but I would of been much happier to see a movie about a whole family (not including the dog) get anal probed until they realize they have all been tripping on LSD. The visual effects are actually great but this story made no sense, no motive behind a relative wanting to kill another family member. He obviously was a pedophile but after he molested his niece he decided to strangle her !?"oh I made a huge mistake, this should cover it up, I'll just kill my neice"

Acting was 50/50 some people played their parts well, but some had over acted. Not to mention the whole score sounds like I'm about to head over to Sunday mass, like why? Jesus it doesn't all have to sound so dramatic.

I feel like this would of been a better film without having to involve a family finding out an uncle is a murdering piece of scum. Science fiction should stick to science fiction and not throw in all this non sense of dramatic realization. 5/10

A movie not to compare with other great Sci fi's
4 January 2020
If you sit there and analyze the film as a copy to alien or aliens, you're obviously very naive because this film only has 1 thing in common with alien. Its in space!

The rest of the film is a very high octane action/horror that is full of surprises, plenty of deaths and acting that is great and played out well. I wouldn't even want to compare it to Alien because the 1st film was a drama/horror. This is more of a space discovery of possible cells found on a planet that turn out to be stable and alive. Thus having to have found life beyond the stars, they never expected it to grow into a full creature. NO EGGS, NO INCUBATING IN CHESTS, NO XENOMORPH.

I would like to take the time to add the actors constantly being suspended in restraints to give the anti gravity effect and beautiful special effects made this film that more realistic. Now in no shape or form am I saying this film is far more superior than Alien but I would say view the film as if you were an astronaut studying the deep space for answers and knowledge that we are not alone. The creature is definitely a very different take and it pretty much resembles almost a squid but it's necessities to survive are instinctively based on resources. Just like humans we need nourishment and air. 8/10

The Thing's that could of been...
13 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Now I'm not gonna sit here and say this movie didn't have many flaws. Starting with the fact that it is more CGI than practical effects. John Carpenter really mastered his vision on what he wanted to build as a horror film. Tension, paranoia and no doubt some of the most gross and horrific creatures in horror film making.

What they failed to do in this movie were all those things I mentioned, instead ended up getting a straight to action gore fest with barely any character build up. I can't say it was a complete utter waste but more of a cool way to piece together the things that were shown in carpenters version that we never witnessed. SPOILERS!!!

The monster that was burned and merged with another face. Who committed suicide in the comms room, and the obvious question how did this creature get loose. Obviously for the sake of science someone had to crack the ice box with a drill and dig it up for tests without proper quarantine procedures. Now I know some people were very disappointed and with reason they have every right, but when I consider a movie to be abysmal or in other lament terms a piece of crap I consider things such as acting, cinematography, score and story. I have to point out that the actors were pretty spot on, was the story amazing no, not even close to how suspenseful the carpenter version that gripped us from start to finish.

In the end we were left off with the question, did we need a prequel. Were we better off left with our theories and questions or was it fair enough that we all did pondered these questions and were let down with what could of been another tensioned filled prequel. But instead ended with a film that couldn't compete with the cult classic and my favorite horror movie of all time.

Evil Dead (2013)
8/10
Super underrated remake/sequel and not for the faint of gore
9 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I seriously can't even fathom some people in this generation. I can see why some people wouldn't enjoy this as much as the originals but to give it 1/10 you seriously don't have an open concept for film.

For starters this is in many ways a tribute to the 1st evil dead better special effects, lots of gore and some of the most disturbing scenes in horror cinema. Evil dead in many ways is its own entity but obviously having some influence from the originals. It's more of a serious tone and loses the B rated horror film and ridiculous but hilariously cheesy scenes from the previous trilogy, instead it replaces it with some great practical special effects and a horror soundtrack that adds to the intensity and terror of the film.

Yes there are plot holes and yes some of the lines are cheesy but it's a freaking horror film. It's not an academy award winning film with a stellar script, it's a tribute to Sam raimi's low budget film that eventually was idolized as a cult classic. Also to anyone who thinks this movie is not cannon to the original, films how would you know? The Chevy is in the film, the cabin is more or less identical, ash shows up at the end which means it has to be in the same universe.

Get over yourself hipsters or butt hurt fan boys, that say they are true fans of horror because this movie has it all and more. If you can't find it in you explore hanges in someone else's vision, easy don't watch it or better yet wait until it's on Netflix and give it a whirl.

From an evil dead fan to the next (I watched all the TV seasons and own the first season) please watch with an open mind and give credit where it's due!

6 Souls (2010)

A great psychological thriller, mixed with horror
17 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Now if anybody knows great acting then you'll know that this movie has some top notch actors in it. The film is very invigorating and puts you on the edge of your seat. Now some might say the 1st half was better but quite frankly I believe the whole movie held up to its story. Jonathan Rhys meyers is phenomenal at switching his personalities on the drop and does it convincingly. Julian Moore the doctor who has very little belief in the supernatural is put to the test when the patient named Adam starts to test her beliefs in the unknown.

Now you can say the ending which definitely leaves you thinking possibly the evil still exists within another host . Without giving too much away I believe the the actors and the story itself holds up especially when movies now these days are all reboots or remakes. This is a great chilling story of one individual who has 6 souls in his body that some have their good intentions and others some evil.

It definitely isn't an Oscar award winning movie but for a horror/thriller this is definitely on the must to watch list and pay close attention. Every detail adds up.

Extinction (2015)

Not your typical zombie flick
31 July 2015
As far as the film goes, a tragedy takes place at the beginning of the movie which puts the two men against each other. Now when I first saw the trailer to this flick I knew it wouldn't be a high budget film. So going into the first 1 hr of the film had me a bit worried that it would be full of cheesy special effects. But instead the script writer maintains focus on the two protagonists and the kid, which is a smart way to do a low budget film less gore, less explosions, less cost. I found it to be quite scary at certain points especially when you see a camera turn away from one of the actors you know something is going to pop out behind. Matthew fox does a pretty good job maintaining a strange character with some sort of secret but if you're like me you can piece it together no problem. I really enjoyed the make up designs for the evolved zombies, but it didn't pan out to be as great as I expected. If you dig movies such as the descent or even 30 days of night I'm sure you will find a shed of enjoyment with the film. Don't over sell yourself thinking it is a complete sleeper it will have its moments, but unfortunately a short hand of them.
