Region 4 DVD severely cut
5 January 2006
I'm saddened to report that the region 4 2 disc DVD release has been cut by about 12 minutes, a series of cuts so severe that it renders some subplots completely meaningless.

presumably this has been done by the Director, but i still feel somewhat cheated that a original version isn't available on this "not so special edition"

However the region 2 DVD is complete, although the picture quality isn't as good. the fact the region 2 is full frame isn't too bad as the film was shot that way and theatrically matted to 1.85

my advice is that if you want to see this Kiwi classic the way you originally remember it get the Region two version

KONG BITES (spoiler)
13 December 2005
Warning: Spoilers
just got back from the midnight screening....

its so bloated and overlong it makes Van Helsing look good.......

HOWEVER if somebody knocked 40 minutes out of it and changed the score it would be VERY VERY good

the biggest error is all the interesting creatures and set pieces on skull island ..which do NOTHING to serve the story and lessen KONGs impact considerably , by that i mean they weaken his character and in fact make him boring as hell when Jackson eventually gets round to a scene with him. kongs design is also a problem hes just a big silverback now and unfortunately moves and looks like HOMER SIMPSON in a lot of shots

personally ild ditch from the skull island act , the sequences with the venture and the rocks.....the entire insect bit, and all the van helsing moments from the first dinosaur sequence (and the bats ) to tighten skull island and put kong in the spotlight where he belongs....

the new york bits however are PERFECT , and the core emotional content of the story comes to the fore at last ,but by the time you get to them even their impact is lessened by what has gone before.
