Curb Your Enthusiasm: The End (2005)
great ending
*SPOILERS*
What a great ending! Much like the final episode of Seinfeld, this episode is a showcase of Larry David's most annoying, selfish, and generally inhumane qualities. The best part of the Seinfeld finale was the montage of bad deeds performed by Jerry, George, and Elaine, shown before the cast is sentenced to prison. In "The End", Larry David uses the same formula, but it's even funnier. This time, after the montage finishes, Larry dies and goes to Heaven, but it doesn't end there. Yes, what happens in the afterlife is typical and predictable. But seeing Larry act like an a--hole to his guardian angels (one of whom is played by Dustin Hoffman) is funny no matter what. Another perfect ending to another perfect show.
Four Brothers (2005)
B movie despite big budget cast and director
This movie just wasn't very good, and the current rating of 7.1 will slowly decrease as more sensible people vote on it. The plot was silly, the acting was mediocre, and the directing was surprisingly under par. Think for a second about the climax where Mark Wahlberg (who must have been hiding in the snow, or dropped from a plane) comes out of the middle of nowhere, bouncing menacingly to ridiculous hip hop music, and engages the "bad guy" in a fist fight. Accepting for the time being that he came out of nowhere and that's o.k., why oh why would the wahlberg character give his mother's murderer the chance for a fair fight. Also, how about the very first scene where the two hoods rob the convenience store. We learn later that they were sent there specifically to murder the old lady. But in the first scene of the movie, the two hoods don't even know the woman was there until she screams. The idea is that we will be surprised later on when we find out that she was assassinated. That's just cheap. Now I'm not saying this movie was a total piece of crap, but the problems I've mentioned (and there were many more), are common in B action movies, which is what Four Brothers is. It's just disguised as something different.
Kinsey (2004)
Irony of Kinsey
First of all, "Kinsey" is very well made. As far as conventional movies go, you'd be hard pressed to find a better one this year. I say conventional knowing full well that the subject matter makes it appear to be just the opposite. However, the only difference between this movie and a great many others is the subject matter. It's nothing more than unconventional material slapped on a Hollywood skeleton. Sure, the ideas that the titular character expresses are very different from what was then, and if you think about it still are, status quo, but the movie doesn't want to associate any of these ideas with itself. Kinsey is just like any other movie about an individual. And in making an individual the subject of the film the individual can say and do anything during the course of the movie without directly linking those ideas to the film as its own arguments. They're simply the ideas of the man, and the film is about the man. Kinsey couldn't get financial aid during the later stages of his project about women because companies didn't want Kinsey's ideas on sex to be associated directly with their company. It's ironic how this movie was made in America, which has basically the same moral standards for sex as they did during the time of Alfred Kinsey's life, and was funded by people who would not very much like to see in the papers that they are being associated with the idea that consensual sex between adults should be looked at from a scientific point of view, and that monogamy is only taboo because of social structure. But like i said earlier, the movie is about a man, not about the ideas expressed by the man. That's how Hollywood can very comfortably make a movie like this without stirring the pot. I'm giving it a ten out of ten because in it's genre, Hollywood biography, it is a superb example. Now, let's see someone actually say something!
Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult (1994)
what's the deal
Why do all of leslie nielsen's movies get bad ratings when the original naked gun got a very good score? The next two naked guns are basically the same thing. Besides the individual jokes, there is no difference, and it's not like the jokes have gotten worse. I think leslie is getting a raw deal. If you like this kind of humor i can't understand how you could differentiate between any of nielson's movies, especially the naked gun series. If you're like me and you like nielsen and the genre you'll definately like the naked gun 33 1/3. The jokes are similar to the previous naked gun movies and all the original cast is back. 3/4 stars
