Cocaine Bear (2023)
Fun Escape
What to say about Cocaine Bear. It was what I expected (which is a good thing). Supposedly based on a true story it takes a light hearted approach to gore and violence. With each successive gory bear encounter topped by the next it is a cavalcade of cliché personas (dim-witted country folk, evil gangster and assorted henchmen, overprotective hero mom, rebelling teenager, etc...) encountering the insurmountable force of a bear rampaging the forest high on cocaine and jonesing for its next fix. If you are watching this film you are not watching it for high drama. There are no Shakespearian plots here. Just good ole' American gratuitous violence and gore all of which are done rather well. Get the popcorn, cuddle up on the couch with your family and be prepared to laugh and be startled by the rampaging bear.
Quicksand (2023)
Not Worth The Watch
After reading the other reviews for this film I feel like I watched a different movie. I must say that I was hopeful. The first fifteen minutes of the film got my interest. Fresh new faces and nerdy character reminiscent of the lead in Napoleon Dynamite. But that's when the decline began. Bad dialogue. Silly, unbelievable, plot twists. Bad acting. It's all there. So many things just seem tacked on, usually involving guns. The writer of the script seems torn between wanting it to be a comedy while at the same time a suspenseful crime thriller and in the end failing miserably at both. I would advise not to waste your time with this one. Like I said - while I appreciate the new faces the end result still falls flat.
Lockout (2012)
One Of The Worst Films Of the Year
This film was awful! While I accept that this genre of film is supposed to be mindless and action packed you would hope that the screenwriter employed a little logic to the script to at least make the whole thing plausible. From basic things like how gravity works (can you really fall to Earth by jumping out of a space station?); to being able to brutally beat somebody in the head with no blood, no bruising - seemingly no ill effects at all; to the whole concept that god knows how many countless billions of dollars would be spent to incarcerate just 500 prisoners in freezers in outer space (I mean really? You could go to Sears and buy 500 freezers for a lot less money if you really want to freeze prisoners). Especially when you consider that they lavish that much money on a 500 prisoner prison when the international space station is still this solar panel bedecked spindly set of tubes that ultimately crashes into this huge prison with minimal damage to the prison (the space station is destroyed of course). The chase scene graphics looked like they were video game quality - cartoonish and low budget. And then there is Guy Pearce's character...he has brought us many fine films, and he looks great in this film; but, his dialog is just a string of sarcastic quips delivered in an emotionally detached way that begs the question why do we care about this character at all in this film. I love films and see hundreds of them a year. I especially like Sci-fi and am more than willing to suspend reason to a degree (after all we are talking fantasy here). But this film just misses the mark by such a huge degree that I think it will be remembered as one of the worst films of the year. Razzies here it comes.
